Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand the crisis communication strategies used by the Caribbean medical tourism industry in the 2017 hurricane season, and also evaluate the quality of the disaster communication messages delivered via digital mediums. Design/methodology/approach This study includes a comprehensive, qualitative content analysis of 149 risk and crisis messages from 51 healthcare organizations distributed through digital media. The medical tourism providers (MTPs) include hospitals, medical tourism facilitators, practitioners/private physicians, specialty clinics, and dental and cosmetic providers. Findings Nearly half of the MTPs included in the data set delivered no post-disaster information to external audiences. The most prominent post-disaster message strategy utilized was conveying operational messages. Furthermore, an unexpected finding was the sheer magnitude of unrelated health-oriented and promotional destination marketing content disseminated before, during and after these events. Research limitations/implications This analysis excludes internal organizational channels of communication which may have been used to communicate risk and crisis messages during these events (i.e. employee e-mails, announcements made through intercom systems, etc.). Our analysis does not include content disseminated through medical tourism forums (i.e. Realself.com, Health Traveler’s Forum, FlyerTalk Forum). Practical implications Small-scale MTPs can improve on any weaknesses through proactive planning and preparation by creating organizational goals to complete basic crisis communication training courses and in doing so support the applied professional development of disaster and crisis responders in the Caribbean region. Second, MTPs exposed to similar risks of natural disasters may use these findings for comparative analysis purposes to support their own organizational planning. Finally, this study supports the continued utility of the National Center for Food Protection & Defense guidelines for analyzing and evaluating organizational performance. Originality/value Currently much of the academic scholarship of applied disaster communication narrowly focuses on the response strategies of one organization, or analyzes one social media platform at a time (i.e. Twitter). A strength of this analysis is the inclusion of an organizational sector (i.e. Caribbean medical tourism providers) and the range of platforms from which the content was captured (e.g. websites, org. blogs and social media networks).

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the types of contents shared through Facebook during different phases of disaster management. Design/methodology/approach The primary data of this study were collected using the qualitative method. To acquire the necessary data, researcher selected 50 Sri Lankan Facebook users who can read and understand Sinhala with more than 1,000 friends using the snowball sampling method. Selected Facebook users had to collect Facebook posts related to flood during two weeks time period. Data were collected until it reached data saturation point. The collected Facebook posts were transcribed and translated into English. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the Facebook posts. Findings The most prominent use of Facebook for disaster communication can be observed in, during and post-disaster phases. In the during-disaster phase, people used Facebook to share posts related to disaster warning, request for help or rescue, share information about rescue missions, share contact numbers of rescue teams, request donation items, coordinate aid distribution, ask for volunteer work and to provide feedback about the ongoing funding programs. In the post-disaster phase, people used Facebook to request volunteer help for cleaning, to provide feedback about the progress and to ask about donating cleaning products. Originality/value Findings of this study can be used by the government or authorized bodies to develop official social media channels, which would fulfill information requirements during disaster situations.

The objective of this research is to determine the factors as a typology of hydrometeorological disasters. The research method employed is post-disaster survey activities through hypothetical descriptions from October to December 2020. The analysis technique uses factor analysis on five variables, namely runoff, infiltration, slope, land cover, and infrastructure. The data retrieval obtained nine areas of landslide disaster points along 20 kilometers from Kiarapandak Village to Cisangku Village, Sukajaya Subdistrict, Bogor Regency, one of which were the areas affected by landslides in January 2020. From the factorial analysis results, it was found that the five variables above were suitable as a factor for determining disaster based on correlation values (r), that includes Factor 1 which is the variable of land slope (0.855) and the infrastructure variable (0.872). Factor 2 is water infiltration (0.928), water runoff (0.269), and land cover (0.717). In conclusion, the typology of hydrometeorological disasters is distinguished based on two determinants, firstly the physical construction of land, slopes, as well as infrastructure of road and river. Secondly,  factors of water flow, water infiltration, runoff, and land cover.Tujuan penelitian adalah membuat determinasi faktor-faktor sebagai tipologi kebencanaan hidrometeorologi. Metode penelitian melalui kegiatan survey pasca bencana melalui deskripsi hipotetik pada bulan Oktober-Desember 2020. Teknik analisis menggunakan analisis faktor pada 5 (lima) variabel yaitu limpasan, resapan, kemiringan, tutupan lahan, dan infrastruktur. Pengambilan data mendapatkan 9 (sembilan) daerah titik bencana longsor sepanjang 20 kilometer dari Desa Kiarapandak sampai Desa Cisangku, Kecamatan Sukajaya Kabupaten Bogor, yang merupakan wilayah terkena bencana longsor pada bulan Januari 2020. Dari hasil analisis faktorial diperoleh bahwa 5 (lima) variabel di atas layak dijadikan faktor determinasi kebencanaan berdasarkan nilai korelasi (r),  meliputi Faktor 1 adalah variabel kemiringan lahan (0,855) dan variabel infratruktur (0,872). Faktor 2 adalah resapan air (0,928), limpasan air (0,269), dan tutupan lahan (0,717). Kesimpulan, tipologi bencana hidrometeorologi dibedakan berdasarkan dua faktor determinasi yaitu pertama faktor konstruksi fisik lahan, kemiringan dan infratruktur jalan dan sungai, dan faktor aliran air, resapan air, limpasan, dan tutupan lahan.
