This study analyzed the impact of COVID-19, which, in 2020, globally increased uncertainty about the stock repurchase of South Korean listed companies. The results suggest that the market reaction to stock repurchases during the COVID-19 period was significantly subdued. In particular, the market reaction to KOSPI companies, on stock repurchase, was positive, while it was negative in the case of KOSDAQ companies. It has also been reported that the market ranks lower on the reliability of the signal after the onset of COVID-19. This means that if a company discloses a stock repurchase in a situation where the value of the market as a whole has declined, it cannot be accepted as an undervalued signal. Furthermore, it was revealed that the market responded more positively to the announcement of repurchases by companies that had actively managed shareholder wealth by repeatedly making stock repurchases before COVID-19. These results suggest that companies should always be aware of this, as the market response to stock repurchases in market shockers such as COVID-19 is weaker. Additionally, managers can manage their stock prices more effectively through stock repurchases during market shockers if they consistently manage their stock prices through stock repurchases when companies are undervalued.

Purpose Lean and agile strategies are two basic supply chain paradigms that strategist decouples based on their internal and external environment. This study aims to identify the influence of market orientation (MO) and quality management (QM) deployment on the supply chain strategies. Furthermore, this study also seeks empirical evidence of the impact of these core strategies on creating risk management capabilities. Design/methodology/approach Quantitative research technique is deployed to explain the phenomenon. The data was gathered through a structured scale questionnaire from supply chain professionals working at different manufacturing firms. Valid data of 134 respondents is then analyzed through partial least squares structural equation modeling for further empirical understanding. Findings The outcome of the research indicates that MO capability; as an external drive is a key to make an operational strategy. QM as an internal control is more prone to formulating a lean strategy (LS). Another important finding is that LS does not complement risk management capabilities especially in an uncertain market condition. Practical implications The study suggested concrete implications for risk management through the right mix of lean and agile supply chain strategies. There are some good insights for the supply chain policy-makers working in a developing country. Originality/value This study will provide empirical evidence for managing supply chain risk through an effective strategy making.

Purpose Few studies have focused on the impact of conjugal control and non-conjugal control on the innovation capability of family firms. In the context of the relative lack of research on the relationship between family firm heterogeneity and innovation ability, this study aims to focus on the differentiated impact of husband–wife-controlled family listed companies and non-husband–wife-controlled family listed companies on their innovation capabilities, which provides empirical evidence with more Chinese institutional and cultural characteristics for the development of corporate organizational management and innovation theories. Design/methodology/approach Taking all A-share listed family firms from 2007 to 2016 as the research sample, this paper examines the influence of spousal control on firm innovation level by empirical research method. Findings The empirical results show that compared with non-spousal-controlled family enterprises, spousal-controlled family enterprises have significant positive effects on the level of enterprise innovation. Further studies suggest that joint management of spousal-controlled family enterprises improves the level of innovation. Authority difference of the couple will weaken the innovation capacity. However, the wife’s professional skills can promote the innovation level. Originality/value Focusing on the characteristics of family internal structure and embedding marriage relationship in the enterprise organization, this paper investigates the influence of different characteristics of husband and wife and cooperation mode on enterprise innovation, and the conclusion enriches the theory of family business and family science, as well as provides important information reference for the stakeholder groups in the capital market.

This study analyzes the impact of Information Technology (IT) Controls quality on control risk and audit fees. The impact is expected to occur when regulation increases sensitiveness to audit risk assessment. The research focuses on IT Controls as part of Internal Control over Financial Reporting, particularly on scoping quality, segregation of duties, and Controls framework compliance. The research was conducted with a questionnaire on a population of Italian listed companies. We find that audit fees are lower for higher IT scoping quality, IT Controls segregation of duties, and IT Controls framework compliance. The overall conclusion is that IT Controls quality is related to lower control risk, audit fees, and audit effort.

The impact of high-speed railway (HSR) on corporate behavior has recently attracted both practical and theoretical interest. In this paper, based on a sample of A-share listed companies from 2007 to 2020 in China, we use a difference-in-difference model to explore the impact of HSR openings on corporate fraud and analyze its mechanism. We find that HSR introduction has several important implications. First, it reduces the tendency and frequency of corporate fraud. Second, HSR opening restrains corporate fraud by improving the external supervision level and reducing the financing constraints of the company. Third, the inhibitory effect of the HSR opening on corporate fraud is significant when the market competition is less intense, and the company’s internal control level is poor. Fourth, after distinguishing types of fraud, HSR opening can still significantly inhibit information disclosure fraud and manager fraud, but not operation fraud. These results indicate that HSR openings promote the flow of information and labor across regions, alleviating the information asymmetry of firms. Our findings are conducive to improving the governance environment of the listed companies, which provides new clues for discovering and restricting corporate fraud.
