Two tuning techniques namely: Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Ziegler Nichols (ZN) technique are compared. PSO is an optimization technique based on the movement and intelligence of swarms. PSO applies the concept of social interaction to problem solving. It is a computational method that optimizes a problem by iteratively trying to improve a candidate solution about a given measure of quality. Ziegler Nichols tuning method is a heuristic method of tuning a PID controller. The ZN close loop tuning is performed by setting the I (integral) and D (derivative) gains to zero and increasing proportional gain to obtain sustained oscillations. The DC Motor is represented by second order transfer function is used as a plant, which is controlled using PID controller. The PID controller parameters are chosen by tuning the controller using PSO algorithm and ZN method. The response of the system to unit step input is plotted and performance measures are evaluated for comparing PSO algorithm and ZN technique. Here we have compared the two tuning methods based upon the settling time (Ts), peak overshoot (Mp) and the two performance indices namely Integral square error (ISE) and Integral Absolute error (IAE).

This paper deals with photovoltaic (PV) power plant modeling and its integration into the medium-voltage distribution network. Apart from solar cells, a simulation model includes a boost converter, voltage-oriented controller and LCL filter. The main emphasis is given to the comparison of two optimization methods—particle swarm optimization (PSO) and the Ziegler–Nichols (ZN) tuning method, approaches that are used for the parameters of Proportional-Integral (PI) controllers determination. A PI controller is commonly used because of its performance, but it is limited in its effectiveness if there is a change in the parameters of the system. In our case, the aforementioned change is caused by switching the feeders of the distribution network from an open-loop to a closed-loop arrangement. The simulation results have claimed the superiority of the PSO algorithm, while the classical ZN tuning method is acceptable in a limited area of operation.

In this paper, anti-synchronization of discrete chaotic system based on optimization algorithms are investigated. Different controllers have been used for anti-synchronization of two identical discrete chaotic systems. A proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control is used and its parameters is tuned by the four optimization algorithms, such as genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), modified particle swarm optimization (MPSO) and improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO). Simulation results of these optimization methods to determine the PID controller parameters to anti-synchronization of two chaotic systems are compared. Numerical results show that the improved particle swarm optimization has the best result.
