Superior Atomic Clock for Continuous Long Time Operation

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have drawn much attention in areas of displays and varied illumination devices due to multiple advantages, such as high brightness, high efficiency, wide viewing angle, and simple structure. However, the long-time degradation of OLED emission is a serious drawback. This degradation was investigated by past works, which pointed out that the degradation was induced by high-density currents through OLED component under the long-time operation [1][2]. Proposed by a past work [3], different reverse biases was imposed on OLED components in display frames to alleviate the long-time degradation on OLEDs. Most recently, along with the reverse bias, new pixel circuits [4][5] for AMOLED displays are designed to alleviate OLED degradation, thus successfully extending OLED life time. However, since emission luminances in different frame times during AMOLED displaying differs significantly for displaying varied images, the OLED degradation evolves in a highly unpredictable fashion. In this study, based on valid theories, the voltage across the OLED is first used as indicator for OLED degradation. Then the relation between the level of OLED degradation, in terms of OLED’s cross voltage, and the history of imposing reverse biases are precisely modeled. With the model, the degradation of the OLED under reverse bias to extend lifetime can be successfully predicted. Based on this model, engineers can then optimize the applied reverse bias on OLEDs to maximize the OLED lifetime for varied display requirement.

In this study, a lab-scale Partial Nitritation Sequencing Batch Reactor (PNSBR) was implemented for treating high-ammonium old landfill leachate to yield an appropriate NO2—N/ NH4+-N ratio from 1/1 to 1.32/1 mixture as a pretreatment for subsequent Anammox. The objective of this study was to determine the optimal hydraulic retention time (HRT) at different influent ammonia concentrations for 210 days. The experimental results showed that with the influent ammonia concentrations of 500, 1000, 1500 and 2000 mg/L, HRT is 12 h, 21 h, 30 h and 48 h, respectively. The range of free ammonia (FA) concentration from 17 to 44 mg/L completely inhibited nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) for long time operation. The COD removal efficiency was very low (6±2) %.

Salt can cause titanium alloys to crack, and if long-time operation of titanium hardwares in salt atmospheres is expected, effective means must be found to eliminate or control this tendency. The authors describe in detail their stress-corrosion testing of titanium alloys, and the results are plotted in a number of tables. Figures show stress-versus-temperature charts at different high temperatures, and the microstructure of the alloy after testing is illustrated. The results of the tests are evaluated and a brief summary is given.

According to Post Fukushima action items in Korea, KHNP has established the integrated aging management system to reinforce aging management of system, structures, and components (SSCs) effectively for seven operating units, which are in service for more than twenty years, and for Kori Unit 1 and Wolsung Unit 1, which are subject to continued operation (CO) based on NUREG-1801 GALL report. KHNP’s integrated aging management programs (AMPs) focus on the establishment of aging management system for long-lived operation of nuclear power plants in Korea. The integrated aging management system consists of the integrated AMP standard guideline, operating guideline for each plant, individual AMPs of each plant, and AMP Data Base (DB) system including implementation results, basic DB information related to facilities operating in NPPs, and operating information such as operating experience and evaluation report. The integrated aging management system is importantly utilized for Periodic Safety Review (PSR) and the renewal of CO. Therefore, it will be largely contributed to keep NPPs the level of safety for long time operation through the effective aging management.

Connected-Element Interferometry (CEI) is a technique for measuring the phase delay of difference of Time Of Arrival (TOA) of a downlink radio signal to two antennae on a short baseline. This technique can use an atomic clock for time-frequency transmission and achieve intermediate accuracy angular tracking. Owing to the relatively short length of the baseline, the passive reception mode, and near real-time operation, CEI can be used to continuously monitor the orbit variations of both cooperative and non-cooperative satellites. In this paper, a small-scale CEI system of two orthogonal baselines (75 m × 35 m) is investigated to track a Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) Television (TV) satellite at 110·5°E. The phases are extracted from correlation results. The results show that the Root Mean Square (RMS) of the phase fitting residuals, if not calibrated, is within 2° at night and up to 10° in the daytime. After applying the calibration signal, the RMS of the phase fitting residuals in the daytime decreases to the same level at night. Comparing the phase delay with the a priori phase delay using Two-Line-Element (TLE) data, the integer ambiguity is successfully resolved. Finally, a batch algorithm is used to estimate the orbit of the GEO satellite, and the orbit determination accuracy is evaluated using the precise orbits provided by the China National Time Service Centre (NTSC). The results show that the accuracies in the radial direction and the cross-track direction are less than 1 km, and the Three-Dimensional (3D) position accuracy reaches the 2 km order of magnitude.
