Authors report on the use of Integra dermal regeneration template after excision of an extended, recurrent skin tumor in the temporal region. The area covered with Integra was 180 cm2. Skin grafting to cover Integra was performed on the 28th day. Both Integra and the skin transplant were taken 100%. Integra dermal regeneration template can provide good functional and aesthetic result in the surgical management of extended skin tumors over the skull. Orv. Hetil., 2013, 154, 225–227.

Background: Recent work on Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis focuses on neuroimaging modalities; however, these methods are expensive, invasive, and not available to all patients. Ocular imaging of biomarkers, such as drusen in the peripheral retina, could provide an alternative method to diagnose AD. Objective: This study compares macular and peripheral drusen load in control and AD eyes. Methods: Postmortem eye tissues were obtained from donors with a neuropathological diagnosis of AD. Retina from normal donors were processed and categorized into younger (<55 years) and older (>55 years) groups. After fixation and dissection, 3-6 mm punches of RPE/choroid were taken in macular and peripheral (temporal, superior, and inferior) retinal regions. Oil red O positive drusen were counted and grouped into two size categories: small (<63 μm) and intermediate (63-125 μm). Results: There was a significant increase in the total number of macular and peripheral hard drusen in older, compared to younger, normal eyes (p<0.05). Intermediate hard drusen were more commonly found in the temporal region of AD eyes compared to older normal eyes, even after controlling for age (p<0.05). Among the brain and eye tissues from AD donors, there was a significant relationship between cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) severity and number of temporal intermediate hard drusen (r=0.78, p<0.05). Conclusion: Imaging temporal drusen in the eye may have benefit for diagnosing and monitoring progression of AD. Our results on CAA severity and temporal intermediate drusen in the AD eye are novel. Future studies are needed to further understand the interactions among CAA and drusen formation.

This study was conducted to determine the clinical evaluation and various etiological factors of secondary seizures in patients admitted to Government Medical College, Nagpur. We evaluated 58 patients of secondary seizures from Dec 2011 to Oct 2013. Secondary seizures were defined as case of seizure with CT (brain) or MRI (brain) abnormality1. Out of 58 cases 35 were males and 23 were females. Mean age of study subjects was 34.85. The commonest presenting feature was generalized tonic clonic convulsions (42 patients) followed by focal seizures (16 patients).  Todd’s palsy was observed in 4 cases. Aura was present in 24 cases. According to CT brain scan the aetiology was – neurocysticercosis (34.48%), post stroke (27.59%), tuberculoma (24.14%). Space occupying lesions(SOLs) were present in 8 patients, out of whom 4 had brain tumour, 2 patients had brain abscess, 1 had hydatid cyst and 1 had metastasis. Majority of lesions were located in frontal region (58.62%), followed by in parietal region (44.83%), in temporal region (25.86%) and in occipital region (13.79 % patients). In our study neurocysticercosis was found to be the commonest cause of secondary seizures. As in a meta-analysis it was found that cysticidal drugs result in better outcome in patients of neurocysticecosis, we recommend that the patients of secondary seizures should be identified for the aetiology and treated at the earliest2.

A 16-year-old female patient with headache was admitted to our hospital. Radiological examination showed a Spetzler- Martin Grade III arteriovenous malformation (AVM) located at the left frontal lobe. Volume-staged stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) treatment performed in two fractions at three-month intervals and post-procedural period were uneventful. Eight months later the patient was admitted to our hospital with headache, vomiting, right-sided facial palsy and right upper extremity paresthesia. Radiological examination demonstrated severe vasogenic edema in the left centrum semiovale and temporal region. Due to severe and steroid-resistant malign edema, hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy was performed as an alternative treatment option. Neurological symptoms resolved completely after HBO2. Radiological examination demonstrated serious improvement of brain edema and mass effect.

The multilevel per cell technology and continued scaling down process technology significantly improves the storage density of NAND flash memory but also brings about a challenge in that data reliability degrades due to the serious noise. To ensure the data reliability, many noise mitigation technologies have been proposed. However, they only mitigate one of the noises of the NAND flash memory channel. In this paper, we consider all the main noises and present a novel neural network-assisted error correction (ANNAEC) scheme to increase the reliability of multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash memory. To avoid using retention time as an input parameter of the neural network, we propose a relative log-likelihood ratio (LLR) to estimate the actual LLR. Then, we transform the bit detection into a clustering problem and propose to employ a neural network to learn the error characteristics of the NAND flash memory channel. Therefore, the trained neural network has optimized performances of bit error detection. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme can significantly improve the performance of the bit error detection and increase the endurance of NAND flash memory.
