Local buckling in steel tubes was observed to be capable of reducing the ultimate loads of thin-walled concrete-filled steel-tube (CFST) columns under axial compression. To strengthen the steel tubes, steel bars were proposed in this paper to be used as stiffeners fixed onto the tubes. Static-loading tests were conducted to study the compression behavior of square thin-walled CFST columns with steel bar stiffeners placed inside or outside the tube. The effect and feasibility of steel bar stiffeners were studied through the analysis of failure mode, load–displacement relationship, ultimate load, ductility, and local buckling. Different setting methods of steel bars were compared as well. The results showed that steel-bar stiffeners proposed in this paper can be effective in delaying local buckling as well as increasing the bearing capacity of the columns, but will decrease the ductility of the columns. In order to obtain a higher bearing capacity of columns, steel bars with low stiffness should be placed inside and steel bars with high stiffness should be placed outside of the steel tubes. The study is helpful in providing reference to the popularization and application of this new structural measure to avoid or delay the local buckling of thin-walled CFST columns.

Two columns of thin-walled concrete-filled steel tubes (CFSTs), in which tube seams are connected by self-tapping screws, are axial compression tested and FEM simulated; the influence of local buckling on the column compression bearing capacity is discussed. Failure modes of square thin-wall CFST columns are, first, steel tube plate buckling and then the collapse of steel and concrete in some corner edge areas. Interaction between concrete and steel makes the column continue to withstand higher forces after buckling appears. A large deflection analysis for tube elastic buckling reflects that equivalent uniform stress of the steel plate in the buckling area can reach yield stress and that steel can supply enough designing stress. Aiming at failure modes of square thin-walled CFST columns, a B-type section is proposed as an improvement scheme. Comparing the analysis results, the B-type section can address both the problems of corner collapse and steel plate buckling. This new type section can better make full use of the stress of the concrete material and the steel material; this type section can also increase the compression bearing capacity of the column.

The paper presents the analysis of the load-bearing capacity of thin-walled steel bars such as beam-column. It was assumed that the rods are subject to uniformly distributed surface corrosion in the atmosphere over their entire length. As a result of corrosion, the mass loss of these rods, i.e. the thickness of the cross-sectional walls of the rod are evenly reduced. Therefore, the dependence of the critical force - the eccentricity changes. The theory of stability of thin-walled bars was used to calculate the load capacity of the rod. To calculate changes in the load capacity of the rod, an interactive relationship was used that combines compression with bending. A calculation example of the load capacity of an eccentrically compressed rod with a “C” section which has been corroded has been presented.

With the development of carbon fiber reinforced composites and the continuous improvement of the properties of bonding agents, scholars recommended using carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) to enhance cold-formed thin-walled C-shaped steel structures. It can provide a fast and effective way to strengthen and repair damaged steel structures. However, discussion on the bearing capacity calculation of cold-formed thin-walled C-section steel column strengthened by CFRP was limited. Also, the relevant influencing factors (the number of CFRP reinforcement layers), the orientation of CFRP (horizontal, vertical), and the location of CFRP reinforcement (web + flanges + lips, web + flanges, web, and flanges) were overlooked in calculating the bearing capacity of cold-formed thin-walled C-section steel column strengthened by CFRP. Then, the calculation result of the load capacity will be inaccurate. This work, therefore, studied the effects of CFRP reinforcement layers, CFRP direction, and CFRP reinforcement position on the ultimate load of CFRP-strengthened cold-formed thin-walled C-section steel column. A three-dimensional (3D) finite element model of cold-formed thin-walled steel strengthened by CFRP was established to discuss the bearing capacity under axial compression. Furthermore, a method for calculating the bearing capacity of the CFRP-strengthened cold-formed thin-walled C-section steel column was proposed based on the direct strength methods (DSM). The results indicate that not only the slenderness ratio, section size, and length of members but also the number of CFRP reinforcement layers and orientation of CFRP have an impact on the calculation of bearing capacity. The equation modified in this work has excellent accuracy and adaptability. Predicting the bearing capacity of reinforced members is necessary to give full play to the performance of CFRP accurately. Thus, the methods proposed can provide a reference value for practical engineering.

This study investigated the axial compressive performance of six thin-walled concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) square column specimens with steel bar stiffeners and two non-stiffened specimens at constant temperatures of 20 °C, 100 °C, 200 °C, 400 °C, 600 °C and 800 °C. The mechanical properties of the specimens at different temperatures were analyzed in terms of the ultimate bearing capacity, failure mode, and load–displacement curve. The experiment results show that at high temperature, even though the mechanical properties of the specimens declined, leading to a decrease of the ultimate bearing capacity, the ductility and deformation capacity of the specimens improved inversely. Based on finite element software ABAQUS, numerical models were developed to calculate both temperature and mechanical fields, the results of which were in good agreement with experimental results. Then, the stress mechanism of eight specimens was analyzed using established numerical models. The analysis results show that with the increase of temperature, the longitudinal stress gradient of the concrete in the specimen column increases while the stress value decreases. The lateral restraint of the stiffeners is capable of restraining the steel outer buckling and enhancing the restraint effect on the concrete.

For the effective detection of acoustic emission (AE) impulses against the noise background, the correct assessment of AE parameters and the increase in the defect location accuracy during data processing, it is necessary to consider the waveform of the AE impulse. The results of numerous studies have shown that the waveform of the AE impulse mainly depends on the properties of the waveguide – the path along which the signal propagates from the source to the sensor. In this paper, the effective analytical method for modeling of AE signals is considered, which allows to obtain model signals that have the shape of the envelope and spectrum as real one. Based on the obtained results, the attenuation parameters of AE waves for various characteristics of the waveguide and evaluate the probability of defects detecting at various distances between the AE source and sensor are evaluated. Based on the results obtained, the parameters of the AE impulse for various characteristics of the waveguide were estimated, and the parameters of the AE pulses and noise were compared.
