Aiming at the complex structure and high manufacturing process requirements of traditional knotter, this article proposes a new rope knotting method. Based on the knotting method, a knotter is designed to use a new mechanism which is made up of two new incomplete gear mechanisms to drive rope clamping mechanism and rope hooking and griping mechanism. First, a kinematic cycle diagram of the knotter is determined, and the structures of each key mechanism are designed. Then, a virtual prototype of the knotter is established by Unigraphics and imported into Automated Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical Systems to analyze the kinematic of each key mechanism. The success rate is 98.4% through 500 physical tests on the physical model of the knotter. The results indicate that the knotting method is reliable. The knotter can meet the requirements of structure, posture, and coordination during knotting process. The new knotter has no separate mechanism for cutting rope and tripping out of the rope buckle. Therefore, the structure is simplified and reduces the design and manufacturing difficulties. Furthermore, the new incomplete gear mechanism solves the problem that in the conventional incomplete gear mechanism, the driven gear can swing at a large angle or even cannot be locked in the case when the locking arc of the passive gear is too short.

The increasing use of epicyclics for high powered marine and industrial applications has resulted in world wide interest in this type of gearing. The coaxial input and output, reduced losses, small size and low weight are some of the advantages. The use of a full size development test rig using the power circulation method has been fundamental to the evolution of double helical, flexible annulus epicyclics, and has led to a detailed understanding of their operating principles. This understanding has been essential for the analytical modelling and the development of innovative design concepts. The paper outlines some of the work which has been carried out in the test rig at NEI Allen Ltd - Allen Gears. The method of measuring the dynamic load sharing is discussed and some of the results which have led to improvements in the design and manufacturing methods are given. Test rig work continues currently with the development of low noise gears and vibration isolation.

Space exploration is undergoing exciting disruptive change, both through the advent of new business models and through the development of innovative technologies. As a consequence of this accelerated activity, innovative design and manufacturing techniques dedicated entirely to space exploration and exploitation are slowly emerging. These go beyond the simplistic approach of considering space as a harsh environment and rather offer solutions adequately developed for alien environments such as interplanetary space or planetary bodies. As demonstrated in this paper, the art community is particularly relevant to support of these efforts. The authors present a conceptual artwork designed from the interplay of materials and local astrophysical conditions. This evolving sculptural installation uses the extreme lunar surface conditions as enablers rather than constraints.
