The accurate prediction of ground effect aerodynamics is an important aspect of wing-in-ground (WIG) effect vehicle design. When WIG vehicles operate over water, the deformation of the nonrigid surface beneath the body may affect the aerodynamic performance of the craft. The likely surface deformation has been considered from a theoretical and numerical position. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional cases have been considered, and results show that any deformation occurring on the water surface is likely to be caused by the wing tip vortices rather than an increased pressure distribution beneath the wing.

The aerodynamic performance and the bypass flow field of a vertical axis wind turbine under self-starting are investigated using CFD simulations in this paper. The influence of pitch angle variations on the performance of the wind turbine during self-starting is presented. A two-dimensional model of the wind turbine with three blades is employed. A commercial software FlowVision is employed in this paper, which uses dynamic Cartesian grid. The SST turbulence model is used for turbulence modeling, which assumes the flow full turbulent. Based on the comparison between the computed time-dependent variations of the rotation speed with the experimental data, the time-dependent variations of the torque are presented. The characteristics of self-starting of the wind turbine are analyzed with the pitch angle of 0o、-2oand 2o. The influence of pitch angle variations on two-dimensional unsteady viscous flow field through velocity contours is discussed in detail.

The aerodynamic performance of a turbine vane was measured in a linear cascade. These measurements were conducted for exit-true chord Reynolds numbers between 150,000 and 1,800,000. The vane surface rms roughness-to-true chord ratio was approximately 2 × 10−4. Measurements were made for exit Mach numbers between 0.3 and 0.9 to achieve different loading distributions. Measurements were made at three different inlet turbulence levels. High and intermediate turbulence levels were generated using two different blown grids. The turbulence was low when no grid was present. The wide range of Reynolds numbers was chosen so that, at the lower Reynolds numbers the rough surfaces would be hydraulically smooth. The primary purpose of the tests was to provide data to verify CFD predictions of surface roughness effects on aerodynamic performance. Data comparisons are made using a two-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis. Both two-equation and algebraic roughness turbulence models were used. A model is proposed to account for the increase in loss due to roughness as the Reynolds number increases.
