Measurements and Predictions of Surface Roughness Effects on the Turbine Vane Aerodynamics

The aerodynamic performance of a turbine vane was measured in a linear cascade. These measurements were conducted for exit-true chord Reynolds numbers between 150,000 and 1,800,000. The vane surface rms roughness-to-true chord ratio was approximately 2 × 10−4. Measurements were made for exit Mach numbers between 0.3 and 0.9 to achieve different loading distributions. Measurements were made at three different inlet turbulence levels. High and intermediate turbulence levels were generated using two different blown grids. The turbulence was low when no grid was present. The wide range of Reynolds numbers was chosen so that, at the lower Reynolds numbers the rough surfaces would be hydraulically smooth. The primary purpose of the tests was to provide data to verify CFD predictions of surface roughness effects on aerodynamic performance. Data comparisons are made using a two-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis. Both two-equation and algebraic roughness turbulence models were used. A model is proposed to account for the increase in loss due to roughness as the Reynolds number increases.

We study the linear stage of the dynamo instability of a turbulent two-dimensional flow with three components $(u(x,y,t),v(x,y,t),w(x,y,t))$ that is sometimes referred to as a 2.5-dimensional (2.5-D) flow. The flow evolves based on the two-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations in the presence of a large-scale drag force that leads to the steady state of a turbulent inverse cascade. These flows provide an approximation to very fast rotating flows often observed in nature. The low dimensionality of the system allows for the realization of a large number of numerical simulations and thus the investigation of a wide range of fluid Reynolds numbers $Re$, magnetic Reynolds numbers $Rm$ and forcing length scales. This allows for the examination of dynamo properties at different limits that cannot be achieved with three-dimensional simulations. We examine dynamos for both large and small magnetic Prandtl-number turbulent flows $Pm=Rm/Re$, close to and away from the dynamo onset, as well as dynamos in the presence of scale separation. In particular, we determine the properties of the dynamo onset as a function of $Re$ and the asymptotic behaviour in the large $Rm$ limit. We are thus able to give a complete description of the dynamo properties of these turbulent 2.5-D flows.

An approach to predicting the effects of freestream turbulence on turbine vane and blade heat transfer is described. Four models for predicting the effects of freestream turbulence were incorporated into a Navier-Stokes CFD analysis. Predictions were compared with experimental data in order to identify an appropriate model for use across a wide range of flow conditions. The analyses were compared with data from five vane geometries and from four rotor geometries. Each of these nine geometries had data for different Reynolds numbers. Comparisons were made for twenty four cases. Steady state calculations were done because all experimental data were obtained in steady state tests. High turbulence levels often result in suction surface transition upstream of the throat, while at low to moderate Reynolds numbers the pressure surface remains laminar. A two-dimensional analysis was used because the flow is predominantly two-dimensional in the regions where freestream turbulence significantly augments surface heat transfer. Because the evaluation of models for predicting turbulence effects can be affected by other factors, the paper discusses modeling for transition, relaminarization, and near wall damping. Quantitative comparisons are given between the predictions and data.

Predicted turbine vane heat transfer for a rough surface over a wide range of test conditions was compared with experimental data. Inlet pressures varied between 0.2 and 1 atm., and exit Mach numbers ranged between 0.3 and 0.9. Thus, while a single rough surface vane was used for the tests, the effective roughness in wall units varied by more than a factor of ten. Comparisons were made for both high and low freestream turbulence intensities. Two-dimensional Navier-Stokes heat transfer predictions were obtained using the code RVCQ3D. Results were obtained using both algebraic and k–ω turbulence models. The algebraic model incorporated the Cebeci-Chang roughness model. The k–ω turbulence model accounts for roughness in the boundary condition. Roughness causes turbulent flow over the vane surface. Even after accounting for transition, surface roughness significantly increased heat transfer compared to a smooth surface. The k–ω results agreed better with the data than the Cebeci-Chang model. The low Reynolds number k–ω model did not accurately account for roughness at low freestream turbulence levels. The high Reynolds number version of this model was more suitable at low freestream turbulence levels.

Turbine vane aerodynamics were measured in a three vane linear cascade. Surface pressures and blade row losses were obtained over a range of Reynolds and Mach numbers for three levels of turbulence. Comparisons are made with predictions using a quasi-3D Navier-Stokes analysis. Turbulence intensity measurements were made upstream and downstream of the vane. The purpose of the downstream measurements was to determine how the turbulence was affected by the strong contraction through 75° of turning.

Current industrial applications require a consideration of two-dimensional surface roughness effects in design and optimization of fluid bearings. Although the influence of striated surface roughness on fluid lubrication is now at a fairly mature level of understanding, the knowledge and understanding of two-dimensional roughness effects is not nearly at the same level as that achieved over the past several decades for one-dimensional striations. The subject of this paper includes the formulation of a practical “roughness averaged” lubrication equation that is appropriate for two-dimensional surface roughness and applicable over a wide range of Knudsen numbers. After derivation by multiple-scale analysis, the resulting lubrication equation is specialized to treat the patterned data islands located on a storage medium as a two-dimensional roughness pattern, and then used to determine the effect of this roughness on the air-bearing interface between recording head slider and disk. The roughness averaged lubrication equation is solved numerically by a variable-grid finite-difference algorithm, and computed results are included for several bearing geometries.

The average flow model presented by Patir and Cheng [1] is evaluated. First, it is shown that the choice of grid used in the average flow model influences the results. The results presented are different from those given by Patir and Cheng. Second, it is shown that the introduction of two-dimensional flow greatly reduces the effect of roughness on flow. Results based on one-dimensional flow cannot be relied upon for two-dimensional problems. Finally, some average flow factors are given for truncated rough surfaces. These can be applied to partially worn surfaces. The most important conclusion reached is that an even closer examination of the average flow concept is needed before the results can be applied with confidence to lubrication problems.

The problem of flow-induced vibration has been studied extensively. However, much of this research has focused on the smooth cylinder to gain an understanding of the mechanisms that cause vortex-induced vibration. In this paper results of an investigation of the effect of surface roughness on the cross-wind forces are presented. Measurements of the sectional RMS fluctuating lift forces and the axial correlation of the pressures for Reynolds numbers from 1 × 105 to 1.4 × 106 are given. It was found that surface roughness significantly increased the axial correlation of the pressures to similar values found at high subcritical Reynolds numbers. There was little effect of the surface roughness on the sectional lift forces. The improved correlation of the vortex shedding means rough cylinders will be subject to larger cross-wind forces and an increased possibility of vortex-induced vibration compared to smooth cylinders.


The hydrodynamic lubrication of rough surfaces is analysed with the Reynolds equation, whose application requires the roughness spacing to be large, and the roughness height to be small, compared with the thick­ness of the fluid film. The general two-dimensional surface roughness is considered, and results applicable to any roughness structure are obtained. It is revealed analytically that two types of term contribute to roughness effects: one depends on the shape of the autocorrelation function and the other does not. The former contribution was neglected by previous workers. The numerical computation of an example shows that these two contributions are comparable in magnitude.

The cylinder flow is a canonical problem for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), as it can display several of the most relevant issues for a wide class of flows, such as boundary layer separation, vortex shedding, flow instabilities, laminar-turbulent transition and others. Several applications also display these features justifying the amount of energy invested in studying this problem in a wide range of Reynolds numbers. The Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (URANS) equations combined with simplifying assumptions for turbulence have been shown inappropriate for the captive cylinder flow in an important range of Reynolds numbers. For that reason, recent improvements in turbulence modeling has been one of the most important lines of research within that issue, aiming at better prediction of flow and loads, mainly targeting the three-dimensional effects and laminar-turbulent transition, which are so important for blunt bodies. In contrast, a much smaller amount of work is observed concerning the investigation of turbulent effects when the cylinder moves with driven or free motions. Evidently, larger understanding of the contribution of turbulence in those situations can lead to more precise mathematical and numerical modeling of the flow around a moving cylinder. In this paper, we present CFD calculations in a range of moderate Reynolds numbers with different turbulence models and considering a cylinder in captive condition, in driven and in free motions. The results corroborate an intuitive notion that the inertial effects indeed play very important role in determining loads and motions. The flow also seems to adapt to the motions in such a way that vortices are more correlated and less influenced by turbulence effects. Due to good comparison of the numerical and experimental results for the moving-cylinder cases, it is observed that the choice of turbulence model for driven and free motions calculations is markedly less decisive than for the captive cylinder case.

The Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations were solved along with three turbulence models, namely κ-ε, κ-ω, and Reynolds stress models (RSM), to study the fully developed turbulent flows in circular pipes roughened by repeated square ribs. The spacing between the ribs was varied to form three representative types of surface roughness; d–type, intermediate, and k–type. Solutions of these flows at two Reynolds numbers were obtained using the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software Fluent. The numerical results were validated against experimental measurements and other numerical data published in literature. Extensive investigation of effects of rib spacing and Reynolds number on the pressure and friction resistance, flow and turbulence distribution was presented. The performance of three turbulence models was also compared and discussed.
