This work describes an experimental study based on a simplified model of a vertical sluice gate installed in a channel with a moving bed of glass spheres with 2 mm diameter. The originated scour cavity and downstream dune were studied. The influence of the apron length and the downstream tailwater depth were also analysed. Imaging techniques provided the tools to this investigation. The data acquisition and processing consisted in acquiring images of the flow and automatically process them to identify the water-sediments interface and the longitudinal profile of sediments’ bed at different instants.

A surface roughness attenuation approach based on the Fourier decomposition of surface roughness into harmonic components may allow predictions of the behavior of real rough surfaces within concentrated contacts. Recently the simplified model for rolling/sliding conditions was suggested. A high pressure ball on disk tribometer was complemented by hi-speed digital camera with the aim to observe a progress of roughness feature pass through the contact. The experiments with artificial features were carried out under rolling/sliding conditions, evaluated by thin film colorimetric interferometry and compared with theory. Detail understanding of real roughness behavior inside contact under rolling/sliding conditions can have extensive impact on practical design of machine components.

Most datapath synthesis approaches use a simple area model to evaluate design area quality. However, using such a simplified model could mislead synthesis tasks into generating inferior designs. This paper presents an extensive experimental study to validate the correlation between the tradition area model, our proposed area model, and the actual layouts. The results show that traditional area quality measures are not good indicators for optimization in datapath synthesis. Moreover, this paper also shows that to provide accurate indications for design tradeoffs in high-level synthesis, the fidelity of the estimates is more important than the accuracy.

Abstract Experiments of an inducer with symmetric slits were conducted. The purpose of the study is to explore the suppression effect on cavitation instabilities by slits. The slits are located in a throat position in each blade and it means symmetric slits. The experiments are done through measuring pressure fluctuation in the flow field and shaft displacement and visualization using high speed camera. In this study, the head performance, the suction performance, the cavity length and the occurrence range and the strength of the cavitation instabilities are compared with the results of inducer without slit. As a result, the slit in throat position does not give bad effect on head performance, improves suction performance, and has a relation to suppression of oscillation of cavitation instabilities because of the suppression effect of cavity length, although the occurrence range of super-synchronous rotating cavitation unfortunately increases because the cavity develops slowly.

Taking the high⁃voltage disconnector of the GW46 type as research object, this research first use Solidworks to build its three-dimensional simplified model, then use ABAQUS to simulate the mechanical characteristics of the disconnector over a wide temperature range, analyzing the influence of the clamping force between the dynamic and static contacts on temperature, the contact pressure between the dynamic and static contacts of the high⁃voltage disconnector of the GW46 type increases with the ambient temperature, and the contact pressure becomes smaller. Compared simulation results with experimental data, the error is less than 5%. Analysis shows that using the ABAQUS to simulation analysis of temperature rise of the high⁃voltage disconnector of the GW46 type, it can be determined that the contact pressure between the dynamic and static contacts changes with temperature. It avoids the complexity of the traditional theoretical calculation of query parameters and tedious calculations, and provides strong reference evidence for improving the reliability of the high⁃voltage disconnector of the GW46 type.
