Industry 4.0 has the potential to cause both evolutionary (operational) and revolutionary (strategic) changes, but assessing the readiness of companies towards Industry 4.0 has largely been a challenge. Industry 4.0 readiness is also important as it is the first step for companies that want to adopt Industry 4.0 technologies. This paper pilot surveys 100 technology companies in Malaysia to understand their overall readiness towards Industry 4.0. In particular, this research paper contributes to the assessment of Industry 4.0 readiness in terms of seven key areas: (i) Market pressure, (ii) risk-taking, (iii) knowledge, (iv) management support, (v) competencies, (vi) motivation and (vii) freedom. These findings can act as stepping stones for managers and companies that are aiming towards the implementation of Industry 4.0 readiness.

China is the largest exporter of toys. Small- and medium-sized toy factories usually face various challenges when they deal with quality aspects and toy safety requirements. After a literature review and pilot study, a conceptual framework to improve factories’ capabilities in dealing with European and US toy safety requirements through Toy safety assessment, Cost and resources optimization, Industry 4.0, ISO 19600:2014 (which has become ISO 37301:2021), and Web-based product compliance platforms, is proposed. In mid-2020, a questionnaire was designed, and an internet questionnaire survey empirical study was conducted. The statistical results from 107 responses suggested that Toy Safety Assessment, ISO 19600:2014 (ISO 37301), and Industry 4.0 have made positive and significant contributions to factories’ capability to respond to European and US toy safety requirements. The study identifies and prioritizes the factors to improve toy factories’ capabilities in dealing with European and US requirements.

AbstractAs Industry 4.0 will greatly challenge employee mental workload (MWL), research on objective wearable MWL-monitoring is in high demand. However, numerous research lines validating such technology might become redundant when employees eventually object to its implementation. In a pilot study, we manipulated two ways in which employees might perceive MWL-monitoring initiatives. We found that framing the technology in terms of serving intrinsic goals (e.g., improving health) together with an autonomy-supportive context (e.g., allowing discussion) yields higher user acceptability when compared to framing in terms of extrinsic goals (e.g., increasing productivity) together with a controlling context (e.g., mandating use). User acceptability still panned out neutral in case of the former, however - feeding into our own and suggested future work.

The primary aim of this article is to present the results and research findings of a pilot study on teachers’ attitudes manifested toward the idea of society 5.0. The study is a part of one of the priority research areas of the Silesian University of Technology – Processes automation and Industry 4.0. in terms of the socio-cultural and methodological implications of Industry 4.0. Eighty-four teachers participated in the research and completed the questionnaire electronically. The research bores the characteristics of a preliminary diagnosis of the problem. Hence, the collected empirical material does not allow the formulation of methodologically valid conclusions. However, it may constitute a “voice in the discussion” on the preparation of teachers for the inevitable change of the role of the school and the teacher in the new society.

Purpose This paper aims to explore the nature of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) cluster, to establish and empirically verify in the pilot study the role of clusters in developing the fourth industrial revolution. It aims to find out if the cluster can provide a conducive knowledge environment fostering the advancement of I4.0; simplify the implementation of I4.0 by making it faster, easier, and cheaper and finally be applied as policy tool organising the development of I4.0. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based on the narrative literature review mapping the cluster’s nature with I4.0 features. It adopts the case study approach and uses simple statistical analysis to explore the basic characteristics of I4.0 clusters combined with a survey technique – short questionnaire organised in three major blocks. Findings Drawing on German pilot study it can be confirmed that clusters offer conducive environment facilitating the emergence, testing and development of I4.0 specific solutions. They provide favourable knowledge environment, simplify and increase the efficiency of the business processes and organise the policymaking in this area. Originality/value The results of presented pilot study rooted in Germany – a country seen as the front-runner in implementing the solutions of the fourth industrial revolution – can add a certain value to the emerging research on unearthed linkages between clusters and I4.0. This paper might be seen as a contribution to the emerging literature on the spatial dimension of I4.0. It expands previous research on cluster channels’ likely impact on I4.0.

AbstractThis article describes results of the survey, which was conducted in the context of investigating the readiness of selected companies in the Czech Republic to implement the principles of Industry 4.0. The main objective of the survey was to analyze the level of a basic knowledge of this topic in enterprises, the existence of appropriate strategies, responsible persons, and the general awareness among employees.
