Graph-based lemmatization of Turkish words by using morphological similarity

Abstract The taxonomic identity of two species of sand flies, Psathyromyia pradobarrientosi (Le Pont, Matias, Martinez & Dujardin, 2004) and Psathyromyia runoides (Fairchild & Hertig, 1953) (Diptera, Psychodidae), was evaluated morphologically and molecularly based upon specimens collected in Brazilian states. The morphological component compared collected specimens with paratypes of Pa. runoides and Pa. pradobarrientosi and their descriptions. Phylogenetic analysis of coI sequences of Pa. pradobarrientosi showed a well-supported group distinct from Pa. runoides. Morphologically, Psathyromyia runoides and Pa. pradobarrientosi males are distinguished by characteristics of the aedeagal ducts and parameral sheath in the genitalia; females are distinguished by the number and shape of the teeth in the cibarium and by the shape of the spermathecae. Given the morphological similarity between the males and the absence of the description of the female of Pa. pradobarrientosi, it is possible that specimens previously identified as Pa. runoides in Brazil are in fact Pa. pradobarrientosi.

Laboratory monkey ethograms currently include subcategories of abnormal behaviours that are based on superficial morphological similarity. Yet, such ethograms may be misclassifying behaviour, with potential welfare implications as different abnormal behaviours are likely to have distinct risk factors and treatments. We therefore investigated the convergent validity of four hypothesized subcategories of abnormal behaviours (‘motor’, e.g., pacing; ‘self-stimulation’, e.g., self-sucking; ‘postural’, e.g., hanging; and ‘self-abuse’, e.g., self-biting). This hypothesis predicts positive relationships between the behaviours within each subcategory. Rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) data on 19 abnormal behaviours were obtained from indoor-housed animals (n = 1183). Logistic regression models, controlling for sex, age, and the number of observations, revealed that only 1/6 ‘motor’ behaviours positively predicted pacing, while 2/3 ‘self-abuse’ behaviours positively predicted self-biting (one-tailed p-value < 0.05). Furthermore, ‘self-stimulation’ behaviours did not predict self-sucking, and none of the ‘postural’ behaviours predicted hanging. Thus, none of the subcategories fully met convergent validity. Subsequently, we created four new valid subcategories formed of comorbid behaviours. The first consisted of self-biting, self-hitting, self-injurious behaviour, floating limb, leg-lifting, and self-clasping. The second comprised twirling, bouncing, rocking, swinging, and hanging. The third comprised pacing and head-twisting, while the final subcategory consisted of flipping and eye-poking. Self-sucking, hair-plucking, threat-biting, and withdrawn remained as individual behaviours. We encourage laboratories to replicate the validation of these subcategories first, and for scientists working with other species to validate their ethograms before using them in welfare assessments.

Motions of a single vortex filament in a background flow are studied by numerical simulation of a set of model equations. The model, which in essence is due to Hama, treats the self-interaction of the filament through the so-called ‘localized-induction approximation’ (LIA). Interaction with the prescribed background field is treated by simply advecting the filament appropriately. We are particularly interested in elucidating the evolution of sinuous vortices such as the ‘wiggle’ seen by Breidenthal in the transition to three-dimensionality in the mixing layer. The model studied embodies two of the simplest ingredients that must enter into any dynamical explanation: induction and advection. For finite-amplitude phenomena we make contact with the theory of solitons on strong vortices developed by Betchov and Hasimoto. In a shear, solitons cannot exist, but solitary waves can, and their interactions with the shear are found to be key ingredients for an understanding of the behaviour of the vortex filament. When sheared, a soliton seems to act as a ‘nucleation site’ for the generation of a family of waves. Computed sequences are shown that display a remarkable morphological similarity to flow-visualization studies. The present application of fully nonlinear dynamics to a model presents an attractive alternative to the extrapolations from linearized stability theory applied to the full equations that have so far constituted the theoretical basis for understanding the experimental results.

The Asiatic wild dog (Cuon alpinus), restricted today largely to South and Southeast Asia, was widespread throughout Eurasia and even reached North America during the Pleistocene. Like many other species, it suffered from a huge range loss towards the end of the Pleistocene and went extinct in most of its former distribution. The fossil record of the dhole is scattered and the identification of fossils can be complicated by an overlap in size and a high morphological similarity between dholes and other canid species. We generated almost complete mitochondrial genomes for six putative dhole fossils from Europe. By using three lines of evidence, i.e., the number of reads mapping to various canid mitochondrial genomes, the evaluation and quantification of the mapping evenness along the reference genomes and phylogenetic analysis, we were able to identify two out of six samples as dhole, whereas four samples represent wolf fossils. This highlights the contribution genetic data can make when trying to identify the species affiliation of fossil specimens. The ancient dhole sequences are highly divergent when compared to modern dhole sequences, but the scarcity of dhole data for comparison impedes a more extensive analysis.

The genus Hylesia Hübner, [1820] has about 110 exclusively neotropical species, widely distributed from Mexico to Argentina. Here a new species (Hylesia pseudomoronensis sp. nov.) from Brazil is described. The specific name is allusive to the morphological similarity with H. moronensis Lemaire, 1976.

Hyperplasia of the endometrial stroma is a poorly recognized lesion, lacking widespread recognition with most, if not all, such cases sequestrated in the literature as endometrial stromal nodules or low-grade endometrial stromal sarcomas. In this paper, we describe three examples of “endometrial stromal hyperplasia” which have a remarkable morphological similarity with the normally proliferating endometrial stroma and the endometrial stromal neoplasms, but which also possess subtle, but sufficient, differences to justify their taxonomic separation.

The rationale, design, and limitations of the Northwest Ontario Lake Size Series (NOLSS) research program are described. The primary purpose of NOLSS is to discover how lake size per se influences limnological and fisheries phenomena, so that conclusions drawn from studies of particular lakes can be rigorously scaled and applied to lakes of other sizes. NOLSS consists of six lakes located in a remote wilderness region of Northwest Ontario. These lakes were chosen for their geological, hydrological, and morphological similarity (Canadian Shield geology; water renewal time> 5 yr; fully stratified in summer), but they form an exponential gradient in surface area (from 89 to 34 700 ha.) Associated with this gradient of lake size are gradients of physical properties (turbulent energy, mixing depth, thermal behaviour) to which biological communities must adapt. NOLSS fills the conspicuous gap in size that separates two well-studied groups of lakes in Northwest Ontario: the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA), where whole-lake manipulation experiments are performed, and the Laurentian Great Lakes (Nipigon, Superior), where these experiments find some of their most important applications.

The genus Metadinium includes ophryoscolecid ciliates, with two retractile ciliary zones in the anterior body portion, two broad skeletal plates, a lobed macronucleus and two contractile vacuoles. Species belonging to this genus were recorded in several geographical locations and in different host species. However, they were mostly described based on a single ciliatological technique, and until now, there is only one description of the infraciliary pattern in Metadinium ciliates (Metadinium medium). The present study performs the morphological and infraciliature characterization of four species belonging to Metadinium: M. esalqum, M. minorum, M. rotundatum and M. ypsilon; and presents taxonomic notes on the genus. The oral infraciliature in these four Metadinium species corresponds to the Diplodinium-type, pattern shared with genera Diplodinium, Diploplastron, Eudiplodinium, Eremoplastron and Polyplastron. A brief review conducted highlights the difficulty of delimiting Metadinium species due to the morphological similarity among them.

Turkish and Bulgarian both have “double evidential” constructions, which seem to contain reiterated evidential morphemes. This paper, focusing on Turkish data, shows that despite the morphological similarity between the indirect evidential -mIş and the “second” -mIş, double evidentials are not an instance of reduplication. Instead, I propose based on morphological evidence (separability of suffixes, morphological spell-out of related Turkic languages) and semantic evidence (the “second” -mIş introduces a new indexical, the Evaluator) that the second -mIş is the spell-out of a distinct syntactic head, which I call Dubitative.
