Abstract Cowpea is an important food legume widely grown in the semi-arid tropics and serves as a main source of dietary protein, minerals, and vitamins. However, varieties differ from region to region based on the consumer’s preference for seed types determined by seed size, seed coat texture, seed color, and hilum-eye types. The genetics of seed size, seed color, and seed coat texture have been well documented, but the hilum-eye types have not been studied well because they represent seven different types with complex interactions. We studied the genetic segregation for hilum-eye types and determined the number of genes involved in a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from a cross between a small eye parent ‘GEC’ and a Watson eye parent ‘IT98K-476-8’. The results demonstrated a three-gene model, W (Watson), S (small), and R (large), for cowpea seed hilum-eye type pattern and the interaction of these three genes, W, S, and R, resulted in five phenotypes, viz. self, Watson, small, large, and ring hilum-eye types. Moreover, we also mapped the RILs for hilum-eye types, identified three quantitative trait loci (QTLs), and aligned to the cowpea reference genome as QTL qHilum7.1, qHilum9.1, and qHilum10.1, corresponding to these three genes, Ring type (R), Watson type (W), and Small type (S) hilum-eye type patterns, respectively. Therefore, there was a complete agreement between the genetic analysis and QTL mapping for the number of genes controlling the hilum types in cowpea.

SARS-CoV-2 shows a high affinity for the ACE-2 receptor, present on the epithelial cells of the upper and lower respiratory tract, within the intestine, kidneys, heart, testes, biliary epithelium, and—where it is particularly challenging—on vascular endothelial cells. Liver involvement is a rare manifestation of COVID-19. Material and Methods: We reviewed 450 patients admitted due to the fact of SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19) including 88 with liver injury. Based on medical history and previous laboratory test results, we excluded cases of underlying liver disease. The analysis involved a clinical course of COVID-19 in patients without underlying liver disease as well as the type and course of liver injury. Results: Signs and symptoms of liver injury were present in 20% of patients, mostly presenting as a mixed-type pattern of injury with less common cases of standalone hepatocellular (parenchymal) or cholestatic injury. The liver injury symptoms resolved at the end of inpatient treatment in 20% of cases. Sixteen patients died with no cases where liver injury would be deemed a cause of death. Conclusions: (1) Liver injury secondary to COVID-19 was mild, and in in 20%, the signs and symptoms of liver injury resolved by the end of hospitalization. (2) It seems that liver injury in patients with COVID-19 was not associated with a higher risk of mortality. (3) The underlying mechanism of liver injury as well as its sequelae are not fully known. Therefore, caution and further monitoring are advised, especially in patients whose liver function tests have not returned to normal values.

BackgroundThe inclusion of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in therapeutic algorithms has led to significant survival benefits in patients with various metastatic cancers. Concurrently, an increasing number of neurological immune related adverse events (IRAE) has been observed. In this retrospective analysis, we examine the ICI-induced incidence of cerebral pseudoprogression and propose a classification system.MethodsWe screened our hospital information system to identify patients with any in-house ICI treatment for any tumor disease during the years 2007-2019. All patients with cerebral MR imaging (cMRI) of sufficient diagnostic quality were included. cMRIs were retrospectively analyzed according to immunotherapy response assessment for neuro-oncology (iRANO) criteria.ResultsWe identified 12 cases of cerebral pseudoprogression in 123 patients treated with ICIs and sufficient MRI. These patients were receiving ICI therapy for lung cancer (n=5), malignant melanoma (n=4), glioblastoma (n=1), hepatocellular carcinoma (n=1) or lymphoma (n=1) when cerebral pseudoprogression was detected. Median time from the start of ICI treatment to pseudoprogression was 5 months. All but one patient developed neurological symptoms. Three different patterns of cerebral pseudoprogression could be distinguished: new or increasing contrast-enhancing lesions, new or increasing T2 predominant lesions and cerebral vasculitis type pattern.ConclusionCerebral pseudoprogression followed three distinct patterns and was detectable in 3.2% of all patients during ICI treatment and in 9.75% of the patients with sufficient brain imaging follow up. The fact that all but one of the affected patients developed neurological symptoms, which would be classified as progressive disease according to iRANO criteria, mandates vigilance in the diagnosis and treatment of ICI-induced cerebral lesions.

Abstract In general, pedestrians want to cross a road at a mid-block section instead of intersections because it is the shortest route. According to an Indian scenario, most of the crosswalks in urban areas are not signalised and controlled. In this study, the crossing behaviour of pedestrians in terms of speed at a midblock section was studied by considering several parameters. Statistical tests such as ANOVA and Pearson correlation tests were performed in order to know the effect of parameters on the crossing speed of a pedestrian. The pedestrian’s age and gender, crossing type, pattern, time, number of stops, number of two wheelers, three wheelers, light and heavy commercial vehicles, and groups significantly affect their crossing speed. A multiple linear regression model was developed by considering the most significant parameters. The mean absolute percentage error, root mean square error, and R2 values were calculated to validate the models.

Background: Fouquieriaceae is a small family that consists of a single genus, Fouquieria, with eleven species occurring mostly in arid and semiarid regions of Mexico and the southwestern United States. The development of the ovule and the female gametophyte has been poorly characterized in species of the family; thus, it is proposed to carry out a detailed study on the development of the ovule, megasporogenesis and megagametogenesis in Fouquieria fasciculata. Questions: How are the developmental patterns of the ovule and the female gametophyte in Fouquieria fasciculata? Study species: Fouquieria fasciculata (Willd. ex Roem. & Schult.) Nash (Fouquieriaceae). Methods: Embryology, morphology and histochemical tests of floral buds and flowers at pre-anthesis of Fouquieria fasciculata were examined using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Results: The ovules of Fouquieria fasciculata are anatropous, bitegmic and tenuinucellate, and the micropyle is formed by the inner integument. The innermost layer cells of the inner integument form an integumentary tapetum or endothelium. The cells of integumentary tapetum are characterized by very conspicuous wall thickenings on the inner tangential side, and are radially elongated surrounding the nucellus. The pattern of development of the female gametophyte is monosporic Polygonum-type, and the formation of a lateral haustorium was observed. Conclusions: This investigation describes in detail the development of the ovule and the female gametophyte ofFouquieria fasciculata. Our results show interesting features, such as the differentiation of an integumentary tapetum, a monosporic Polygonum-type pattern of development and the formation of lateral haustorial arm in the female gametophyte.

Background: Little is known about how frequently patients with a Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale part III (UPDRS-III) score of 3 or 4, including postural and action tremor, could be classified into early Parkinson's disease (PD).Objective: To examine the prevalence of early PD in patients with subtle parkinsonian signs (rest tremor, postural tremor, and rigidity) without bradykinesia, having a UPDRS-III score of 3 or 4.Methods: Parkinsonism was assessed using UPDRS-III based on both the United Kingdom PD Society Brain Bank criteria and the Movement Disorder Society PD criteria. Ninety patients with a UPDRS-III score of 3 or 4, including postural tremor, were evaluated by 123I-FP-CIT SPECT (DaTscan), brain MRI, the Mini-Mental State Examination, and smell test. Some patients were additionally examined by 123I-metaiodobenzylguanidine myocardial scintigraphy or 123I-N-isopropyl-p-iodoamphetamine SPECT.Results: Seventy-five [mean age (standard deviation): 76.9 (8.1)] out of 90 patients (83.3%) showed abnormal findings on DaTscan imaging: 57 out of 75 (76.0%) showed a reduced specific binding ratio (SBR) accompanied by an egg shape pattern (n = 37, 49.3%) or a mixed type pattern (n = 14, 18.7%), both reduced SBR and increased asymmetry index (AI) with a normal shape (n = 4, 5.3%), and reduced SBR only (n = 2, 2.7%); 18 (24.0%) showed an egg shape pattern or a mixed type pattern without reduced SBR. In other words, 69 out of 75 patients (92.0%) showed either an egg shape or a mixed type pattern with or without reduced SBR. All patients were free of dementia, and their olfactory function was significantly impaired compared with controls (n = 141) on the odor-stick identification test for Japanese (p < 0.0001).Conclusions: The prevalence of patients with subtle parkinsonian signs having a UPDRS-III score of 3 or 4, including postural tremor, is unexpectedly high in daily clinical practice, and most of these patients could be categorized into mild early-stage PD.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of intradermal tranexamic acid (TA) verses fluocinolone-based triple combination (hydroquinone 4%, tretinoin 0.05%, fluocinolone acetonide 0.01%)therapy in the treatment of melasma. Study Design: Randomized comparative trial Place and Duration: Study was conducted at outpatient dermatology department of Sheikh Zayed hospital Rahim Yar Khan for period of six months i.e from September 2020 to February 2021. Methods: Total 110 patients (age 18-40 year) of both genders having melasma on face were enrolled. Patients details demographics, age, sex and body mass index were recorded after taking written consent. Patients were divided into 2-groups. Group I had 55 patients and received intradermal tranexamic acid and group II had 55 patients andwere given topical fluocinolone-based triple combination (hydroquinone 4%, tretinoin 0.05%, fluocinolone acetonide 0.01%) cream. Follow up was taken for 2-months to determine efficacy and safety. Complete data was analyzed usingSPSS 22.0 version. Results: Out of 110 patients 60 (54.54%) were females and 50 (45.46%) were males. Mean age of the patients in group I was 29.15±5.14 years with mean BMI 24.16±7.22 kg/m2 and in group II mean age was 28.17±5.18 years with mean BMI 23.61±2.48 kg/m2. Most of the patients (85 or 77.27%) had mixed melasma followed by dermal (16 patients /14.54%) and epidermal melasma(9 patients/8.18%). We found that malar-type pattern of melasma was most common, found in 66 (60%) of cases. A decrease in MASI score from baseline (15.4) was found 2.4 in group-Iand 5.6 in group-II. In group II erythema, hypertrichosis, hypopigmentation and acneiform lesions were the side effects found but there was no clinically significant side effect found in group I patients. Conclusion: We found in this study that use of intradermal tranexamic acid (TA) in the treatment of melasma was effective and safe because there were no clinically significant side effects found after this treatment and reduction of MASI score was also significant. The Liesegang phenomenon can be used for micro- and nanofabrication processes to yield materials with periodic precipitation of diverse types of materials. Although there have been several attempts to control the periodicity of the Liesegang patterns, it remains unclear whether the periodic precipitation of AgCl in gel medium causes regular- or revert-type patterns. To confirm the periodicity of the AgCl pattern, we conduct one-dimensional experiments under various ion concentration conditions. From microscopic observations, three different precipitation modes were observed, i.e., continuous precipitation with a sharp front, periodic precipitation and continuous precipitation with a gradual front. For these three modes, numerical analyses of the pattern geometry are performed for the periodic precipitation. It was confirmed that the regular-type pattern appeared for all concentration conditions conducted in the present experiments. Furthermore, the pattern was found to obey the spacing law and the Matalon–Packter law. From our experiments, we concluded that AgCl forms regular-type Liesegang patterns, regardless of the dimension of diffusion.

AbstractThe meshwork pattern is a significant pattern in the development of biological tissues and organs. It is necessary to explore the mathematical mechanism of meshwork pattern formation. In this paper, we found that the meshwork pattern is formed by four kinds of stalk behaviours: stalk extension, tip bifurcation, side branching and tip fusion. The Turing-type pattern underlying the meshwork pattern is a Turing spot pattern, which indicates that the Turing instability of the spot pattern promotes activator peak formation and then guides the formation of meshwork patterns. Then, we found that the Turing wavelength decreased in turn from tip bifurcation to side branching to tip fusion via statistical evaluation. Through the functional relationship between the Turing wavelength and model parameters ($$\upvarepsilon ,{ \rho }_{A}$$ ε , ρ A and $${\rho }_{H}$$ ρ H ), we found that parameters $$\upvarepsilon $$ ε and $${\rho }_{H}$$ ρ H had monotonic effects on the Turing wavelength and that parameter $${\rho }_{A}$$ ρ A had nonmonotonic effects. Furthermore, we performed simulations of local meshwork pattern formation under variable model parameter values. The simulation results verified the corresponding relationship between the Turing wavelength and stalk behaviours and the functional relationship between the Turing wavelength and model parameters. The simulation results showed that the Turing wavelength regulated the meshwork pattern and that the small Turing wavelength facilitated dense meshwork pattern formation. Our work provides novel insight into and understanding of the formation of meshwork patterns. We believe that studies associated with network morphogenesis can benefit from our work.
