Beginning teacher induction is a transition from pre-service teacher preparation to teaching professional which brings a shift in a role orientation and an epistemological move from knowing about teaching through formal study to knowing how to teach by facing daily teaching challenges. This paper deals with the implementation and evaluation of beginning teacher induction programs for technology integration in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) for 24 beginning teachers from the northeastern region in Thailand. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected. Quantitative data were collected from the assessment of the lesson plans and implementation of the lesson plans then analyzed using mean and standard deviation. Qualitative data were collected from three sources: (1) written logs by the participants, (2) data from video observation by the researcher, and (3) field notes by the researcher. Findings from the assessment of the lesson plans and implementation of the lesson plans were at a low level. Almost all participants reported having difficulties in technology integration in CLIL.

Diverse gene products including phytotoxins, pathogen-associated molecular patterns, and type III secreted effectors influence interactions between Pseudomonas syringae strains and plants, with additional yet uncharacterized factors likely contributing as well. Of particular interest are those interactions governing pathogen-host specificity. Comparative genomics of closely related pathogens with different host specificity represents an excellent approach for identification of genes contributing to host-range determination. A draft genome sequence of Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato T1, which is pathogenic on tomato but nonpathogenic on Arabidopsis thaliana, was obtained for this purpose and compared with the genome of the closely related A. thaliana and tomato model pathogen P. syringae pv. tomato DC3000. Although the overall genetic content of each of the two genomes appears to be highly similar, the repertoire of effectors was found to diverge significantly. Several P. syringae pv. tomato T1 effectors absent from strain DC3000 were confirmed to be translocated into plants, with the well-studied effector AvrRpt2 representing a likely candidate for host-range determination. However, the presence of avrRpt2 was not found sufficient to explain A. thaliana resistance to P. syringae pv. tomato T1, suggesting that other effectors and possibly type III secretion system–independent factors also play a role in this interaction.

AbstractThis study investigates the influence of (1) viewing situations (solo- vs. group-viewing) and (2) interpersonal communication in a group-viewing situation on television entertainment. In a field study combining a survey and video observation, (1) entertainment of participants watching television alone or in a group, and (2) entertainment between different groups was compared. To assess interpersonal communication while watching television, group verbal and nonverbal communication behavior was recorded. Results suggest that the presence of others did not influence viewers’ core enjoyment. Further, while the amount of nonverbal communication behavior did not affect viewers’ core enjoyment, particular topics of conversation influenced specific enjoyment qualities, with conversations indicating involvement in the television show intensifying viewers’ empathy, and conversations indicating emotional experiences while watching television decreasing viewers’ suspense. Results are discussed regarding nonverbal and verbal mechanisms that underlie entertainment in different social conditions.

Automatic transfer of learned knowledge from one task or domain to another offers great potential to simplify and expedite the construction and deployment of intelligent systems. In practice however, there are many barriers to achieving this goal. In this article, we present a prototype system for the real-world context of transferring knowledge of American football from video observation to control in a game simulator. We trace an example play from the raw video through execution and adaptation in the simulator, highlighting the system's component algorithms along with issues of complexity, generality, and scale. We then conclude with a discussion of the implications of this work for other applications, along with several possible improvements.

Experimental study on tip vortex cavitation (TVC) was carried out for elliptical hydrofoils with various chord lengths. The purpose of the experiment was to clarify the influences of Reynolds number and water quality on tip vortex cavitation. Experiments were made in a large cavitation tunnel of the Naval Systems Research Center, TRDI/Ministry of Defense Japan. The elliptical hydrofoils tested were NACA 0012 cross section with chord lengths of 500mm, 250mm and 50mm. Reynolds number based on hydrofoil chord length was 2×105 < ReC < 7.4×106. Water quality of the tunnel was characterized by air content and nuclei distribution. Air content of the tunnel was varied between 30% and 80%. Nuclei distribution was measured by a cavitation susceptibility meter (CSM) with center-body venturi. Cavitation inception was determined from high speed video observation. A standard formula, (σL/σS) = (ReL/ReS)n, was applied for the scaling. In the present study, exponent of the scaling law n was found to be 0.2 < n < 0.4. High speed video observation showed that the process of the TVC inception strongly depends on water quality. In the experiments, unsteady behaviors of TVC were also investigated. Strong interactions between sheet cavitation and TVC were observed.
