In order to study the energy loss of bi-directional hydraulic machinery under cavitation conditions, this paper uses high-speed photography combined with six-axis force and torque sensors to collect cavitating flow images and lift signals of S-shaped hydrofoils simultaneously in a cavitation tunnel. The experimental results show that the stall angle of attack of the S-shaped hydrofoil is at ±12° and that the lift characteristics are almost symmetrical about +1°. Choosing α = +6° and α = −4° with almost equal average lift for comparison, it was found that both cavitation inception and cloud cavitation inception were earlier at α = −4° than at α = +6°, and that the cavitation length at α = −4° grew significantly faster than at α = +6°. When α = +6°, the cavity around the S-shaped hydrofoil undergoes a typical cavitation stage as the cavitation number decreases: from incipient cavitation to sheet cavitation to cloud cavitation. However, when α = −4°, as the cavitation number decreases, the cavitation phase goes through a developmental process from incipient cavitation to sheet cavitation to cloud cavitation to sheet cavitation to cloud cavitation, mainly because the shape of the S-shaped hydrofoil at the negative angle of attack affects the flow of the cavity tails, which is not sufficient to form re-entrant jets that cuts off the sheet cavitation. The formation mechanism of cloud cavitation at the two different angles of attack (α = +6°、−4°) is the same, both being due to the movement of the re-entrant jet leading to the unstable shedding of sheet cavity. The fast Fourier analysis reveals that the fluctuations of the lift signals under cloud cavitation are significantly higher than those under non-cavitation, and the main frequencies of the lift signals under cloud cavitation were all twice the frequency of the cloud cavitation shedding.

Sheet cavitation inception can be influenced by laminar boundary layer flow separation under Reynolds numbers regimes with transitional flow. The lack of accurate prediction of laminar separation may lead to massive over-prediction of sheet cavitation under certain circumstances, including model scale hydrofoils and marine propellers operating at relatively low Reynolds number. For non-cavitating flows, the local correlation based transition model, γ−Reθ transition model, has been found to provide predictions of laminar separation and resulting boundary layer transition. In the present study, the predicted laminar separation using γ−Reθ transition model is bridged with a cavitation mass transfer model to improve sheet cavitation predictions on hydrofoils and model scale marine propellers. The bridged model is developed and applied to study laminar separation and sheet cavitation predictions on the NACA16012 hydrofoil under different Reynolds numbers and angles of attack. As a reference case, the open case of the PPTC VP1304 model scale marine propeller tested on an inclined shaft is studied. Lastly as an application case, the predictions of cavitation on a commercial marine propeller from Kongsberg is presented for model scale conditions. Simulations using the bridged model and the standard unbridged approach with k−ωSST turbulence model are performed using the open-source package OpenFOAM, both using the Schnerr–Sauer cavitation mass transfer model, and the respective results are compared with available experimental results. The predictions using the bridged model agree well compared to experimental measurements and show significant improvements compared to the unbridged approach.

Abstract The objective of this paper is to experimentally and numerically investigate the transient cavitation flow during the startup process of mixed flow pump with emphasis on studying the influence of blade numbers. The transient cavitation simulation was studied based on the improved SST k-ω turbulence model and the Zwart cavitation model. Firstly, in order to obtain the relationship between transient flow rate and the variation of rotational speed at startup, a theoretical analysis based on the fast transients of centrifugal pump was first applied to mixed flow pump and was verified by the current experiment study. Subsequently, the influence of blade number on the cavitation flow in the startup was studied. It is found that the transient cavitation could be classified into four stages regardless of the number of blades: no cavitation stage, the cavitation growth stage, the cavitation reduction stage and the cavitation stabilization stage. However, the blade number does have an impact on the spatial-temporal evolution of cavitation. More specifically, when the blade number increases, the initial cavitation appeared lately, the coverage area of the triangular cavitation cloud and sheet cavitation both decreased, and the increase in blade number has a better inhibitory effect on the sheet cavitation at the cavitation growth stage, and can make sheet cavitation disappear more quickly at the cavitation reduction stage.

Much work has been done over the past years to obtain a better understanding, predict and alleviate the effects of cavitation on the performance of lifting surfaces for hydrokinetic turbines and marine propellers. Lifting-surface sheet cavitation, when addressed as a free-streamline problem, can be predicted up to a desirable degree of accuracy using numerical methods under the assumptions of ideal flow. Typically, a potential solver is used in conjunction with geometric criteria to determine the cavity shape, while an iterative scheme ensures that all boundary conditions are satisfied. In this work, we propose a new prediction model for the case of partially cavitating hydrofoils in a steady flow that treats the free-streamline problem as an inverse problem. The objective function is based on the assumption that on the cavity boundary, the pressure remains constant and is evaluated at each optimization cycle using a source-vorticity BEM solver. The attached cavity is parametrized using B-splines, and the control points are included in the design variables along with the cavitation number. The sensitivities required for the gradient-based optimization are derived using the continuous adjoint method. The proposed numerical scheme is compared against other methods for the NACA 16-series hydrofoils and is found to predict well both the cavity shape and cavitation number for a given cavity length.

Abstract The gas content is one of the important factors in cavitation, which may increase the pressure inside the cavity through the diffusive mass transfer of the dissolved gas into the cavity. In the present study, we try to directly measure the cavity pressure inside the sheet cavity at the throat of a converging-diverging nozzle. Then the influences of the flow velocity and the gas content (amount of dissolved oxygen) on the gas partial pressure are investigated. It is found that, even in low gas content level, the cavity pressure is slightly but apparently higher than the saturated vapor pressure, indicating the presence of gas partial pressure. It is observed that the gas partial pressure in significantly developed cavitation is almost constant regardless of the flow velocity but slightly increases against the increase of the saturation level of dissolved gas. It is also found that the gas partial pressure inside cavity depends on the degree of cavitation development; the gas partial pressure decreases with the development of cavitation.

Abstract Cavitation is an undesirable phenomenon in the maritime industry as it causes damage to the propeller, degrading hydrodynamic performance and increasing the subsequent underwater radiated noise (URN). Therefore, mitigating cavitation on marine propellers is an important area of research in order to reduce carbon emissions emitted from the shipping industry and reduce the rate at which ocean ambient noise levels are increasing. The Humpback whale has provided inspiration to research in the fluid-structure interaction field due to the presence of leading-edge (LE) tubercles on the pectoral fins that allow it to perform acrobatic maneuvers to catch prey. This paper assesses the cavitation containment capability of the LE tubercles on a benchmark marine propeller in both heavy and light cavitating conditions using commercial code STAR-CCM+, unsteady incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) solver and the Schnerr-Sauer cavitation model to quantify the sheet cavitation present over a range of operating conditions. In summary, in heavy-cavitating conditions, a reduction in sheet cavitation with the inclusion of LE tubercles was observed to a maximum value of 2.75% in all operating conditions considered. A maximum improvement of 3.51% and 1.07% was predicted in propulsive thrust and hydrodynamic efficiency, respectively. In light cavitating conditions, although in some conditions a reduction in cavity volume was observed, this did not result in an improvement in hydrodynamic performance.

In this study, a cavitation model for propeller analysis was selected using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and the model was applied to the cavitating flow around the Potsdam Propeller Test Case (PPTC) propeller. The cavitating flow around the NACA 66 hydrofoil was analyzed to select a cavitation model suitable for propeller analysis among various cavitation models. The present and the experimental results were compared to select a cavitation model that would be applied to propeller cavitation analysis. Although the CFD results using the selected cavitation model showed limitations in estimating some of the foam cavitation and bubble cavitation identified in the experimental results, it was identified that foam cavitation and sheet cavitation around the tip were well simulated.

Hydrodynamic cavitation is a complex two-phase flow phenomenon involving mass and heat transfer between liquid and vapor. It occurs in many widely-used hydraulic machines, such as pumps and marine propellers, and often leads to undesired effects like material erosion, noise, and vibration. To control these detrimental effects, the visualization of two-phase flow morphology inside the opaque cavity is a crucial point to improve the physical and numerical models of cavitation. The major challenge in experimental measurements of cavitating flow fields is the fact that multiple scattering and a direct reflection of visible light from phase boundaries make the flow optically opaque. In recent years, unlike traditional local measurements using various probes, the development of the third-generation synchrotron radiation sources promotes the application of Xray phase-contrast imaging, which enables clear visualization of boundaries between phases with different refractive indices. In this study, the partial cavity is formed in a convergent-divergent (Venturi) channel with a small contraction ratio where the relatively stable cavitation regime can be sustained in a wide range of cavitation numbers. The experiment performed at Advanced Photon Source (APS) of Argonne uses the short high-flux X-ray pulses emitted from synchrotron sources to capture fast dynamic events and minimize motion blur. The internal two-phase structures and bubble development dynamics inside the quasi-stable sheet cavitation can be identified. Aside from the detailed illustration of two-phase morphology, X-ray phase-contrast images were also used to perform velocimetry by tracking either seeded particles or phase interfaces inside the opaque regions. Through appropriate postprocessing to the recorded X-ray images of cavitation, the time resolved velocity and void fraction fields are obtained simultaneously. These unprecedented experimental data will be further explored in understanding fluid mechanics underneath the cavity, estimating slip velocity between fluid-vapor interactions, and reconstructing pressure fields for compressible flows.

Underwater radiated noise (URN) is greatly increasing due to an increase in commercial shipping, sonar activities, and climate change. As a result, marine life is having difficulty communicating, and marine ecosystem disturbances are occurring. The noise from the cavitation of propellers is affecting URN. Cavitation is a phenomenon in which rapid changes of pressure in a liquid lead to the formation of small vapor-filled cavities in places where the pressure is relatively low. This phenomenon results in poor efficiency of the propeller or turbine of a ship and noise, vibration, and erosion. For these reasons, this study examines the URN of sheet and cloud cavitation. A numerical analysis was done using a Delft Twist11 hydrofoil. The URN resulting from cloud cavitation and sheet cavitation was compared with the numerical results of previous studies. The results showed that URN normally increases due to pressure fluctuations when cavitation occurs. URN increased more significantly in conditions of cloud cavitation than in cavitation inception. It is also shown that a frequency begins to occur after the occurrence of the cloud cavitation, and the frequency grew as the cavitation fully developed.
