DC Vacuum Circuit Breakers based arc control has been a major topic in the last few decades. Understanding vacuum arc (VA) gives the ability to improve vacuum circuit breakers capacity. In this paper, the interaction of a DC vacuum arc with a combined Axial-Radial magnetic field was investigated. The proposed system contains an external coil to produce axial magnetic field (AMF) across the vacuum chamber. The vacuum interrupter (VI) contacts were assumed to be untreated radial magnetic field (RMF) contacts. For this purpose, Finite Element Method (FEM) based Multiphysics simulation of the immerging magnetic field influence on the VA is presented. The simulation shown the ability of the presented system to deflect high DC vacuum arc, also reveals that the vacuum arc interruption capability increases with the rise of the axial component of the magnetic field. Simulation results shown that this method can be applied to improve the interruption capability of the VI.

The forms and the V-I characteristics of vacuum arc have great influence in the vacuum circuit breakers’ protection and control of power system. An experimental set-up was thus designed for vacuum switching arc measurement of V-I characteristics was used and an image collection system was designed to collect the images of vacuum arc used high-speed camera CMOS with the experimental setup, the V-I characteristics and forms of vacuum arc was researched, the curve of V-I was drawn and the images was analyzed. All these provide experimental basis for the analysis on basic physical theory of vacuum switching arc.

The vacuum pressure of vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs) is an important condition to ensure its operational performance, online monitoring of the vacuum pressure of VCBs is an important issue for reducing the accident rate of VCBs and the losses of personnel and property, achieving the intelligence of VCBs. In this paper, 10kV ring network switch cabinet (RNSC) is regarded as the object of study, to achieve its online monitoring. Through analyzing the magnetic field outside the vacuum arc extinguish chambers when the vacuum pressure of VCBs increases, a new method which is based on the comparison of the interphase magnetic field between the corresponding vacuum arc extinguish chambers in RNSCs then monitor the vacuum pressure of VCBs is proposed and demonstrated, and the result established a theoretical basis on the research of the online monitoring system of the vacuum pressure for the vacuum arc extinguish chambers.
