With regard to the structural characteristics of the McPherson suspension system, when a vehicle is being driven on a rough road surface, the force direction of the suspension varies. This poses challenges to the vehicle’s driving safety and handling stability. Based on Lagrangian equations, this paper proposes a new nonlinear semi-vehicle suspension model and presents comparative studies, conducted through simulation, on the estimated accuracy and computational overhead of the small-computational-overhead extended Kalman filter (EKF) and unscented Kalman estimation (UKF) methods, and on the effectiveness of the skyhook sliding mode control (SHSMC) and nonlinear skyhook-sliding mode control (NSHSMC) semi-active suspension control methods. The response of the vehicle to the state estimation algorithm was evaluated through computer simulations using the Carsim vehicle dynamic software. The simulation results reveal that the vehicle dynamic states were satisfactorily estimated when the vehicle was driven on a rough road surface. Compared with the small-computational-overhead EKF algorithm, the estimated results of these variables based on the UKF algorithm have higher accuracy. However, the UKF algorithm requires longer computation time compared with the EKF algorithm. The SHSMC control algorithm achieved greater improvement for the vehicle’s drive handling stability in the 6–10-Hz vibration region compared with the NSHSMC control algorithm. In a high-frequency region over 10Hz, the semi-active suspension controlled by the SHSMC method had a more adverse effect on the driving comfort.

In this paper, in order to improve the roll stability of an articulated vehicle carrying a liquid, an active roll control system is utilized by employing two different control methods. First, a 16-degree-of-freedom non-linear dynamic model of an articulated vehicle is developed. Next, the dynamic interaction of the liquid cargo with the vehicle is investigated by integrating a quasi-dynamic liquid sloshing model with a tractor–semitrailer model. Initially, to improve the lateral dynamic stability of the vehicle, an active roll control system is developed using classical integral sliding-mode control. The active anti-roll bar is employed as an actuator to generate the roll moment. Next, in order to verify the classical sliding-mode control performance and to eliminate its chattering, the backstepping method and the sliding-mode control method are combined. Subsequently, backstepping sliding-mode control as a new robust control is implemented. Moreover, in order to prevent both yaw instability and jackknifing, an active steering control system is designed on the basis of a simplified three-degree-of-freedom dynamic model of an articulated vehicle carrying a liquid. In the introduced system, the yaw rate of the tractor, the lateral velocity of the tractor and the articulation angle are considered as the three state variables which are targeted in order to track their desired values. The simulation results show that the combined proposed roll control system is more successful in achieving target control and reducing the lateral load transfer ratio than is classical sliding-mode control. A more detailed investigation confirms that the designed active steering system improves both the lateral stability of the vehicle and its handling, in particular during a severe lane-change manoeuvre in which considerable instability occurs.

Milling head is an essential assembly in the five-axis computer numerical control machine tools, positioning precision of which directly affects the machining accuracy and surface quality of the processed parts. Considering the influence of nonlinear friction in the transmission mechanism and the uncertain cutting force disturbance on the control precision of the milling head, the static and dynamic performances of the milling head are analyzed; relationships among the drive torque, load torque, motion direction and system parameters are discussed; and, finally, nonlinear dynamic model of the milling head is established. A novel adaptive sliding mode control scheme based on the variable switching gain and the adjustable boundary thickness is proposed for this nonlinear dynamic model; the stability of the closed-loop system is guaranteed by the Lyapunov theory. Experimental results show that the proposed adaptive sliding mode control can reduce the chattering in the traditional sliding mode control and can achieve high control precision without knowing the boundaries of uncertainties in advance.
