Food availability often drives consumer population dynamics. However, food availability may also influence capture probability, which if not accounted for may create bias in estimating consumer abundance and confound the effects of food availability on consumer population dynamics. This study compared two commonly used abundance indices (minimum number alive (MNA) and number of animals captured per night per grid) with an abundance estimator based on robust design model as applied to the white-footed mouse ( Peromyscus leucopus (Rafinesque, 1818)) in food supplementation experiments. MNA consistently generated abundance estimates similar to the robust design model, regardless of food supplementation. The number of animals captured per night per grid, however, consistently generated lower abundance estimates compared with MNA and the robust design model. Nevertheless, the correlations between abundance estimates from MNA, number of animals captured, and robust design model were not influenced by food supplementation. This study demonstrated that food supplementation is not likely to create bias among these different measures of abundance. Therefore, there is a great potential for conducting meta-analysis of food supplementation effect on consumer population dynamics (particularly in small mammals) across studies using different abundance indices and estimators.

I studied the effects of food availability, habitat quality, and timing of breeding on egg production in yellow-headed blackbirds (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus). Food availability was experimentally manipulated by providing females on six wetlands with supplemental food; six additional wetlands served as unsupplemented controls. Mean nest initiation dates varied by up to 6 d among wetlands, and supplementally fed blackbirds initiated nests 2 d earlier than controls, on average (although this latter difference was not quite significant; P = 0.07). Clutch size declined with laying date, but was unaffected by wetland location, food supplementation, or interactions between these two factors and laying date. Although egg size did not vary among wetlands or in relation to supplemental feeding, egg composition varied with both of these factors. All egg components except wet and dry shell and dry albumen varied among wetlands, whereas total water, wet yolk, and lean yolk were the only components that varied with food supplementation. Large blackbird eggs contained proportionately more water and albumen, but proportionately less yolk and shell. These patterns were somewhat compensatory, such that proportional protein and energy content did not vary with egg size; however, large eggs contained proportionately less fat than did small eggs. Proportional egg composition varied among wetlands (yolk and energy content), but was not affected by supplemental feeding. In general, egg production by yellow-headed blackbirds was not greatly affected by food availability. This may have been due to any of the following four factors: (1) inaccessibility of food supplements owing to competition between male and female blackbirds, (2) insufficient time for females to respond to food supplements, owing to rapid settlement and nest initiation, (3) a nutritionally inappropriate food supplement (i.e., protein availability may not have been enhanced among fed birds), or (4) superabundance of natural foods such that food availability was not limiting egg production.

Food limitation may interact with nest predation and influence nesting patterns, such as breeding season length and renesting intervals. If so, reproductive effort should change with food availability. Thus, when food is limited, birds should have fewer attempts and shorter seasons than when food is not limiting. Here we experimentally test that increased food availability results in increased reproductive effort in a fragmented landscape in the Variable Antshrike (Thamnophilus caerulescens) in southern Brazil. We followed nesting pairs in five natural fragments (4, 23, 24, 112, 214 ha) in which food was supplemented for half of those pairs, beginning with the first nest. Nest success in the largest (214 ha) fragment was 59%, compared to 5% in the 112 ha fragment and no nest was successful in the smallest (24 ha) fragment. Birds were seen, but evidence of nesting was never found in the two smallest fragments. Pairs with supplemented food were more likely to increase clutch size from two to three eggs, tended to renest sooner (20 d on average) than control pairs. Also, fragment size interacted with breeding and pairs in the largest fragment had greater daily nest survival rates, and so nests tended to last longer, and so these pairs had fewer nesting attempts than those in the 112 ha fragment while more than those in the smallest fragment with nesting (24 ha). Clearly, pairs increased their reproductive effort when food was supplemented in comparison to control pairs and fragment size seems to influence both predation risk and food abundance.

AbstractThe joint effects of interacting environmental factors on key demographic parameters can exacerbate or mitigate the separate factors’ effects on population dynamics. Given ongoing changes in climate and land use, assessing interactions between weather and food availability on reproductive performance is crucial to understand and forecast population dynamics. By conducting a feeding experiment in 4 years with different weather conditions, we were able to disentangle the effects of weather, food availability and their interactions on reproductive parameters in an expanding population of the red kite (Milvus milvus), a conservation-relevant raptor known to be supported by anthropogenic feeding. Brood loss occurred mainly during the incubation phase, and was associated with rainfall and low food availability. In contrast, brood loss during the nestling phase occurred mostly due to low temperatures. Survival of last-hatched nestlings and nestling development was enhanced by food supplementation and reduced by adverse weather conditions. However, we found no support for interactive effects of weather and food availability, suggesting that these factors affect reproduction of red kites additively. The results not only suggest that food-weather interactions are prevented by parental life-history trade-offs, but that food availability and weather conditions are crucial separate determinants of reproductive output, and thus population productivity. Overall, our results suggest that the observed increase in spring temperatures and enhanced anthropogenic food resources have contributed to the elevational expansion and the growth of the study population during the last decades.

Abstract We investigated three types of decisions made by Harlequin Ducks (Histrionicus histrionicus) in moving between nearshore feeding and offshore resting areas: when to move, whether to move synchronously, and whether to form dense flocks on the roosting grounds. We used the spawning of Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi) as a natural food-supplementation experiment. Birds arrived at nearshore feeding areas a few minutes later and departed almost an hour earlier relative to sunrise and sunset when spawn was available than before and after. Cloud cover and high winds resulted in earlier departures, especially during spawning. Arriving, departing, and offshore groups consisted most frequently of two ducks, and birds showed little tendency to synchronize movements or to form dense flocks when resting. Results indicate that Harlequin Ducks avoid crepuscular and nocturnal periods near shore when not constrained by food availability and the length of daylight in which to feed. Efecto de la Disponibilidad de Alimento en las Decisiones de Arribo y Partida de Histrionicus histrionicus en Áreas de Alimentación Diurna Resumen. Investigamos tres tipos de decisiones hechas por Histrionicus histrionicus (Pato Arlequín) al moverse entre áreas de alimentación cercanas a la costa y áreas de reposo mar adentro: cuándo moverse, si se mueven de modo sincrónico, y si forman bandadas densas en las áreas de reposo. Utilizamos el desove del arenque del Pacífico (Clupea pallasi) como un experimento de suplemento de alimento natural. En relación al amanecer y anochecer, las aves llegaron a las áreas de alimentación cercanas a la costa unos minutos después y se fueron casi una hora más temprano cuando los huevos de peces estuvieron disponibles que cuando no lo estuvieron, ya sea antes o después. Cobertura de nubes y fuertes vientos trajeron aparejadas partidas más tempranas, especialmente durante la etapa de desove. Los grupos que llegaban, partían y los que se encontraban mar adentro estuvieron en su mayoría conformados por dos patos, y las aves en general no tendieron a sincronizar sus movimientos o a formar grupos densos durante el reposo. Los resultados indican que H. histrionicus evita permanecer cerca de la costa durante períodos crepusculares y nocturnos cuando no se haya limitado por la disponibilidad de alimentos y por la cantidad de horas de luz para alimentarse.

Trade-offs in the allocation of finite-energy resources among immunological defences and other physiological processes are believed to influence infection risk and disease severity in food-limited wildlife populations. However, this prediction has received little experimental investigation. Here we test the hypothesis that food limitation impairs the ability of wild field voles ( Microtus agrestis ) to mount an immune response against parasite infections. We conducted a replicated experiment on vole populations maintained in large outdoor enclosures during boreal winter, using food supplementation and anthelmintic treatment of intestinal nematodes. Innate immune responses against intestinal parasite infections were compared between food-supplemented and non-supplemented voles. Voles with high food availability mounted stronger immune responses against intestinal nematode infections than food-limited voles. No food effects were seen in immune responses to intracellular coccidian parasites, possibly owing to their ability to avoid activation of innate immune pathways. Our findings demonstrate that food availability constrains vole immune responses against nematode infections, and support the concept that spatio-temporal heterogeneity in food availability creates variation in infectious disease susceptibility.

The objective of this study was to examine sex and breed effects on heat shock protein 70 (HSPA1A), blood stress indicators and meat quality attributes of lambs. A hundred male and female lambs from the Dorper (n = 50) and Merino (n = 50) breeds were used in this study. Breed and sex had a significant (p < 0.05) effect on the levels of plasma HSPA1A and lactate; where the Merino lambs had higher levels than Dorper. The female lambs had higher levels of plasma HSPA1A than male lambs. Significant sex and breed interactions (p < 0.05) on the levels of plasma HSPA1A were seen. Females had higher (p < 0.05) pHu than males. Dorper lambs had higher (p < 0.05) pH45, meat lightness, thawing loss and tougher meat the Merino breed. Significant correlations were found amongst plasma stress indicators and meat quality attributes. The results indicate that female lambs were more stressed by the pre-slaughter period than males, while the Merino had a higher physiological stress response compared to the Dorper. However, the Dorper breed produced tougher meat.
