Background: In recent years, several reviews have addressed the effectiveness of dance therapy in dementia, healthy older adults, or the elderly in general. However, reviews regarding the effect of this therapy exclusively on patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease have not been found. Objective: The purpose of this study is to review the available literature describing clinical trials which explore the effects of dancing on psychological and physical outcomes, functionality, cognitive function, and quality of life in patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, this review aims to assess the quality of studies that perform dance therapy interventions in these patients. Methods: This study is a systematic review of randomized and non-randomized clinical trials regarding the effect of intervention including a dancing activity in people diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Results: In total, the evidence for this review rests on 12 studies with a total of 349 participants. The findings of this mini-review confirm the positive effect of dance therapy on physical and cognitive function, functionality, psychological outcomes, and quality of life in people with Alzheimer's disease. Conclusion: Most of the studies implementing dance as part of the therapeutic treatment has shown to improve or slow the worsening in the quality of life of patients with Alzheimer's disease and their caregivers. Future research focused on these patients should use a more exhaustive methodology and make a more detailed description of these kind of interventions.

Background: Exercise is related to enhanced cognitive functioning and brain plasticity. Exercise might represent a potential adjunctive treatment for neuropsychiatric disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Furthermore, group exercise may prove especially useful due to its additional benefits. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the effect of low-cost, group-based exercise on mental outcomes in patients with mild to moderate AD. Methods: Participants with mild to moderate AD were randomized to either a non-exercising control (CON) group or a group-exercise (GEX) group (n = 20 each). The GEX participated in eight weeks of three-times-weekly non-consecutive 45-minute sessions consisting of balance, resistance, aerobic, and flexibility exercises to determine their effect on mental outcomes, namely, cognitive function, activities of daily living (ADLs), and quality of life (QOL). Results: The intervention program showed a significant (P ≤ 0.05) increase in Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores (P = 0.023). While the GEX were found to have no change in their (Alzheimer’s disease cooperative study activities of daily living) ADCS-ADL scores (P = 0.574). The CON demonstrated a significant, but deleterious 13.77% decrease in their ADCS-ADL scores from pre- to mid-test (P = 0.023) and from pre- to post-test (P = 0.038). Quality of Life-Alzheimer’s Disease (QOL-AD) scores were unchanged in both the GEX and CON. Conclusions: Our results indicate that a low-cost, multidimensional group exercise intervention can positively influence cognitive function and improve patients with mild to moderate AD ability to perform ADLs.

Abstract There are 5.8 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease and more than 16 million Americans providing unpaid care for people with AD and related dementias. Since a treatment that can slow or stop progression of this disease has yet to be discovered, novel interventions are sorely needed to maintain cognitive function and quality of life among individuals with dementia, improve the health and well-being of caregivers, and provide assistance in caregiving duties. This symposium addresses novel interventions in the dementia care continuum ranging from social and leisure activities for improving cognition to incorporation of emerging technologies to assist with caregiving and provides recommendations and priorities for future studies. The first presentation introduces evidence that participation in an intergenerational choir can improve cognition, social connectedness, and quality of life among people with dementia and their caregivers. The second presentation systematically assesses recent randomized controlled trials of computerized cognitive training (i.e., brain games) aimed at improving cognitive function among individuals with cognitive impairment or dementia. The third presentation examines the evidence that interventions employing artificial intelligence such as robots may improve care for persons with Alzheimer’s disease and caregivers’ quality of life and provides suggestions for future studies to better assess the efficacy of these interventions. The session concludes with a presentation on a survey method used to build consensus among a panel of experts across academia and industry which identified the emerging technologies that are expected to become the most prevalent in dementia care and provides recommendations for limiting associated risks.
