Financial reporting quality has been under scrutiny especially after the collapse of major companies. The main objective of this study is to investigate the audit committee’s effectiveness on the financial reporting quality among the Malaysian GLCs following the transformation program. In particular, the study examined the impact of audit committee characteristics (independence, size, frequency of meeting and financial expertise) on earnings management in periods prior to and following the transformation program (2003-2009). As of 31 December 2010, there were 33 public-listed companies categorized as Government-Linked Companies (GLC Transformation Policy, 2010) and there were 20 firms that have complete data that resulted in the total number of firm-year observations to 120 for six years (years 2003-2009).  Results show that the magnitude of earnings management as proxy of financial reporting quality is influenced by the audit committee independence. Agency theory was applied to explain audit committee, as a monitoring mechanism as well as reducing agency costs via gaining competitive advantage in knowledge, skills, and expertise towards financial reporting quality. The study is important as it provides additional knowledge about the impact of audit committees effectiveness on reducing the earnings management, and assist practitioners, policymakers and regulators such as Malaysian Institute of Accountants, Securities Commission and government to determine ways to enhance audit committees effectiveness and improve the financial reporting of GLCs, as well as improving the quality of the accounting profession.

There is a rise demand for companies to take accountability for their environmental and societal impacts. A core role of the Audit Committee (AC) is to help the board of directors in overseeing the company's reporting policy and oversees the quality of financial reporting in the company. This study examined the impact of audit committee characteristics on the level of environmental and social disclosures in listed banks in Borsa Istanbul. The results of the study showed that there is no statistically significant relationship between the characteristics of the audit committee and the environmental and social disclosures. Consequently, these characteristics have no effect on the volume or type of disclosure and their inability to predict them.

Purpose This paper aims to explore the influence of corporate governance (CG) components on the quality of financial reporting (QFR). The components investigated are the Audit Committee (AC), CEO and external auditor quality. The study also examines whether the AC mediates the effects of other components of CG on the QFR. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from 386 listed companies in four European countries for the period 2015-2017. The QFR was measured using two proxies, discretionary accruals and accruals quality. Firstly, an OLS regression model was estimated to measure the effects of the three variables investigated on the QFR, and to determine which of these variables had the greatest influence in this relationship. Secondly, several mediation analyses were performed to test whether the AC mediates the effects of the CEO, and external auditor quality on the QFR. Findings The findings reveal that each of these three components has a positive impact on the QFR, but that the AC has the greatest effect in this respect. The findings also indicate that the AC mediates the effect of the CEO on the QFR. Alternative tests and different measures for the variables confirm the robustness of the results obtained. Practical implications Significant implications are provided for regulators and policy-makers. Findings of the present study help regulators and policymakers to pay more attention to the enforcement of AC policies, and the appointment of AC members. Further, the results are helpful to policy-makers concerned with improving CG, and who need evidence of the role of high QFR in this matter. Originality/value The findings provide insights into the effect of CG on QFR, and into the most influential component in this relationship; hence, they make a valuable contribution to the literature. They also contribute to the topic of mediations analysis in CG research, providing additional evidence that the AC mediates the effects of the CEO, and external auditor quality on the QFR.

The present study aims to realize and become more familiar with the impact and the functions of audit committee and its characteristics, including the expertise and independence of members, related experiences, and change of auditor on the quality of financial reporting in companies listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange (TSE). The required data are gathered from 105 listed companies on the TSE during 2012-2016 and logistic regression model is used for the hypothesis testing. The findings of the study indicate a positive and significant impact of audit committee characteristics, except audit independency which represents a negative association, and changes of auditor on financial restatement. The innovation of the present study relative to other conducted studies lies in the simultaneous evaluation of audit committee characteristics and change of auditor on the quality of financial reporting. Such results could be appropriate for Stocks and Securities practitioners to comply with the chart of the audit committee, to necessitate the use of corporate governance principles, and to voluntarily provide a corporate governance report.

This study investigates the influence of audit committees personal characteristics on the firms earnings management behavior using Chinas publicly traded firms during 2004-2010. Overall, our findings suggest that audit committees several personal characteristics, such as age, gender, education level, and working experience, are associated with earnings management, which in turn may affect the quality of financial reporting. The results are robust after controlling the size, independence, meeting frequency of audit committee, and other firm specific characteristics. The results are consistent with the predictions based on the Upper Echelons Theory. The contributions to the earnings management literature and implications for regulators and investors are also discussed.

The accelerated pace of economic development, the digital revolution and the internationalization of business has meant for some entities the creation or acquisition of intangible assets (IA), which have become increasingly important for the economic prosperity and for determining the global value of a company, also becoming an important incentive in creating added value. The aim of this paper is focused on analyzing the impact of internally generated intangible assets on the market value of the companies. In order to achieve this aim, we conducted an empirical study involving a sample of 180 NASDAQ and NYSE listed entities between 2007 and 2016. The sample has obtained by applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria on the 500 large-capitalization companies (S&P 500 Index). Making use of regressive techniques, the authors undertook an econometrical model to test whether the impact of intangible assets on the market value of the entities increases when are provided complete, clear and easy-to-understand accounting information about the intangible assets value, which aid business to properly estimate corporate value ratio and reduce implicit bias, due to mainly taking into account those reported values when measuring an entity’s value. The results revealed an impact of the value of the reported and unreported IA on the market value of the entities, for manufacturing companies relative to service companies, which generates an added value on the capital market and implicates a close linkage of disclosure compliance and the associated industry sector. The proposed model can be an inspiration for the legislator to change the structure of financial reporting, or anticipated a valuable informational source for increasing the quality of integrated reporting of economic entities.
