Todays large cities are continually evolving human ecosystem, delivering many services to citizens. The dramatic urbanisation processes and increasing numbers of the population in cities put many strains on city infrastructure and services. XXI century urbanisation issues require robust strategies and innovative planning for their future. Easily cities are characterised as smart or intelligent without regard to clear criteria or specification for a city. There are different opinions regarding smart cities, arguing that it may bring positive social and economic change, developed governance and human capital. However, these aspects are heavily achievable without eliminating the present discrepancy in planning. The purpose of the article is to clarify and identify the characteristics of smartness based on current scholar research. The qualitative study overview on integrative literature review and seven Baltic region cities case study explores possible characteristics, and various city dimension factors which can make a city smart.

Our understanding of gentrification outside of the Anglo-Saxon core is relatively undeveloped. In order to contribute to a more de-centered approach, we ask who are the gentrifiers and how do they change central city neighbourhoods in a post-socialist context? The answers are explored through a mixed-methods approach, using both quantitative and qualitative data: construction permits analysis, census tract data, field trips, and interviews with tenants, former owners, and real estate agents. Findings indicate that gentrifiers vary in nature. They include state tenants, former owners, marginal gentrifiers, political capitalists, and institutional investors. Through their actions, central neighbourhoods have gained younger, more educated, and smaller households. Beyond this case study, we emphasize the usefulness of rent gap theories, the need to study displaced households, and the potential of property rights to enrich theories of gentrification.

AbstractDe-industrialization and the rise of the service sector have formed the basis of recent attempts to develop a new metanarrative of economic change in twentieth-century Britain. Their effects have been taken as writ through labour market statistics or aggregate measures of gross domestic product. However, by focusing on particular micro-economic spaces, a different story emerges. Using the inner areas of Liverpool as a case-study, this article shows how the city's social and economic problems were underwritten by the decline of the service sector, located around the port. By reading the effects of social and economic change through accounts of the physical environment, it demonstrates how urban decay and dereliction provided material resonance to Liverpool's economic decline. The city's landscape of urban decay and dereliction encompassed the infrastructure of everyday life – housing, roads and even trees – as well as that of economic activity, including the docks and warehouses. Taken together, this article shows how this landscape of urban decay and dereliction came to be constituted as an agent within Liverpool's continued economic decline in the 1970s rather than simply being a reflection of it.

Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia (PPRI number 50/2011) indicates the declaration of the National Tourism Development Master Plan (RIPParNas) from 2010 to 2025. Eighty-eight (88) of the National Tourism Strategic Areas (KSPN)is spread on thirty four (34) provinces throughout the territory of the Republic of Indonesia. The province of Bali contributes greatest foreign exchange for Indonesia through the tourism sector. Eleventh (11th) of KSPN-Bali are reflecting a priority-program of Indonesian Government through equal development of Tourism Strategic Areas. Development for Bali still indicates gap between a remote regency and central city. The moratorium on rapid development of tourism facility in South Bali indicates quite difference with slower development of East and North Bali. Thus, efforts to increase the distribution of development require investigation and identification through mapping the potential of Natural Resources and Cultivation, especially, the area of tourism in South Bali (Denpasar/Badung) compared to East (Karangasem) and North (Buleleng). Literature review, field observation, and semi-structured interview data were analysed by combination of qualitative-verification methods and cognitive-mapping solutions. The result of case study was representing mapping the potentials for natural resources and cultivation that was identified in Sanur (Denpasar), Tulamben-Amed (Karangasem), and Bali-Utara (Buleleng). Therefore, unequal development between each tourism strategic areas would reduce, and in turn, prosperity of social communities would be improving for Bali.

Recent electoral research has claimed that individuals in the United States are self–segregating along political lines. In this paper, I use the Twin Cities, Minnesota, metropolitan area as a case study to test for the presence of political segregation through statistical and spatial analyses of electoral data from 1992 to 2012. I find that while segregation by partisan voting at the individual level is comparatively low, it has increased during the study period, and there exists substantial spatial clustering in voting patterns at aggregate levels. These distinct electoral divides between central city and exurb suggest spatial sorting of the electorate in the metropolitan area.
