It still remains challenging for effective hydrolysis of chitosan into chitosan oligomers. In this work, a pretreatment was conducted on chitosan by an ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C4mim]Cl), aiming at improving enzymatic depolymerization of chitosan. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the inter- and intra-molecular hydrogen bonds within chitosan molecules were broken by [C4mim]Cl and the crystalline was destroyed. The oligo-chitosan hydrolyzed from IL-pretreated chitosan, coded as COS-IL, showed a DP of 3~5, in contrast to DP 5~8 with oligo-chitosan obtained from untreated chitosan(coded as COS-UN). COS-IL was more effective than COS-UN in inhibiting intestinal spoilage bacterials growth and it has positive effect on the growth of intestinal probiotic bacterials.

Ionic liquid (IL) pretreatment of lignocellulose is an efficient method for the enhancement of enzymatic saccharification. However, the remaining residues of ILs deactivate cellulase, therefore making intensive biomass washing after pretreatment necessary. This study aimed to develop the one-pot process combining IL pretreatment and enzymatic saccharification by using low-toxic choline acetate ([Ch][OAc]) and IL-tolerant bacterial cellulases. Crude cellulases produced from saline soil inhabited Bacillus sp. CBD2 and Brevibacillus sp. CBD3 were tested under the influence of 0.5–2.0 M [Ch][OAc], which showed that their activities retained at more than 95%. However, [Ch][OAc] had toxicity to CBD2 and CBD3 cultures, in which only 32.85% and 12.88% were alive at 0.5 M [Ch][OAc]. Based on the specific enzyme activities, the sugar amounts produced from one-pot processes using 1 mg of CBD2 and CBD3 were higher than that of Celluclast 1.5 L by 2.0 and 4.5 times, respectively, suggesting their potential for further application in the biorefining process of value-added products.

Aiming to explore the use of ionic liquids (ILs) not yet described in the literature, this work evaluated the hydrolysis of proteins from chicken viscera using the protease Alcalase modified and unmodified by the IL tetramethylammonium bromide. The protein hydrolysates produced in the presence of the IL presented values of antioxidant activities 40% higher than the hydrolysates obtained without IL. In addition, with the presence of the IL, it was possible to obtain protein hydrolysates from chicken viscera with similar antioxidant activities, compared to the protein hydrolysates produced without IL, using 1/3 of the amount of enzyme.
