Influence of the condition of the adjacent tooth surface on fluorescence measurements for the detection of approximal caries

This study evaluated the effects of a new oral hygiene training program on approximal caries in a population of 12-13-year-old Brazilian schoolchildren with a well-established habit of daily toothbrushing with a F dentifrice. Two hundred twenty-two children were randomly allocated into two test groups (I and II) and one control group (III). Group I subjects were trained to establish needs-related oral hygiene habits based on self-diagnosis and a new behavioral principle, the 'linking method', for establishment of habits. The first three visits (20 minutes each) were scheduled at two-day intervals. They were recalled for a monthly check-up during the first 4 months, and then every 3 months for re-evaluation of the results based on self-diagnosis. Group II subjects were recalled at the same intervals for detailed oral hygiene instruction on how to clean every tooth surface using dental tape, toothbrush, and fluoride dentifrice. Group I developed significantly fewer (p <0.001) new approximal manifest (dentin) caries lesions than groups II and III. The mean values (SEM) were 2.3(0.29), 4.7(0.59), and 5.3(0.68), respectively. The conclusions from our study are: In a toothbrushing population using fluoride dentifrices and fluoridated drinking water, the oral hygiene training program with behavioral modification significantly reducedcaries incidence on approximal surfaces. Frequentrepetition of training in meticulous oral hygiene is almost redundant.

Predicting future caries risk is a difficult but important clinical task. The aim of this study was to analyze radiographically the relationship between approximal caries (4d-7m) at ages 11-13 (baseline) and future approximal caries. We followed 534 individuals prospectively through annual bitewing radiographs from 11 to 22 years of age. Two measures were used: individual-based incidence of the first new approximal caries lesion and surface-based incidence of approximal lesions. In the group with no approximal caries lesions at baseline, the individual-based incidence was 19 first new approximal lesions/100 person-years; the corresponding value for those with 3 approximal lesions at baseline was 71. Individuals with no approximal lesions at baseline developed 3.1 new lesions/100 tooth surface-years; the corresponding value for those with 3 lesions at baseline was 7.7. The highest risk for developing new approximal lesions was within the first 2 years after baseline.

Bench-grafted Fuji/M26 apple trees were fertigated with different concentrations of nitrogen by using a modified Hoagland solution for 6 weeks, resulting in a range of leaf N from 1.0 to 4.3 g·m–2. Over this range, leaf absorptance increased curvilinearly from 75% to 92.5%. Under high light conditions (1500 (mol·m–2·s–1), the amount of absorbed light in excess of that required to saturate CO2 assimilation decreased with increasing leaf N. Chlorophyll fluorescence measurements revealed that the maximum photosystem II (PSII) efficiency of dark-adapted leaves was relatively constant over the leaf N range except for a slight drop at the lower end. As leaf N increased, non-photochemical quenching under high light declined and there was a corresponding increase in the efficiency with which the absorbed photons were delivered to open PSII centers. Photochemical quenching coefficient decreased significantly at the lower end of the leaf N range. Actual PSII efficiency increased curvilinearly with increasing leaf N, and was highly correlated with light-saturated CO2 assimilation. The fraction of absorbed light potentially used for free radical formation was estimated to be about 10% regardless of the leaf N status. It was concluded that increased thermal dissipation protected leaves from photo-oxidation as leaf N declined.

Real-time sensing of Chemical Warfare Agents (CWAs) is today a crucial topic to prevent the lethal effects of a terroristic chemical attack. For this reason, the development of efficient, selective, sensitive and reversible sensoristic devices, able to detect by optical response ppm levels of these compounds, is strongly required. Here, the synthesis of a new fluorescent sensor based on a salen-uranyl scaffold, functionalized with two bodipy moieties, and its application for the detection of sub-ppm levels of CWAs is reported. Detection properties were evaluated by fluorescence measurements and selectivity tests demonstrated the strong affinity for CWAs.
