SummaryMonolithic zirconia restorations offer superior mechanic properties and improve indication of non-metallic restorations. Monolithic restorations eliminate bonding and chipping problems mostly seen in zirconia restorations. However, optical properties are insufficient. Colouring or staining is offer possibility to mask the opaque view of restoration. Polishing and glazing are also surface treatment methods for monolithic zirconia.In this study effect of surface treatment methods on final view of zirconia were evaluated. For this purpose 30 monolithic zirconia samples (inCoris TZI, Sirona, Bensheim, Germany) were prepared. The samples were divided into 3 groups: In group A (n=10), glazing was performed using Vita Glaze (Vita Zahnfabrik, Bad Saeckingen, Germany); In group B (n=10), polishing was performed by using Soflex polishing system (3M-ESPE, Neuss, Germany); in Group C (n=10), polishing and glazing were performed. Before and after the applied the surface treatment methods, colour measurements were performed with a spectrophotometer (Vita EasyShade Advanced, Vita Zahnfabrik, Bad Saeckingen, Germany). Data were analysed using paired sample t-test at the p≤0.05 level and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) combined with Tukey’s multiple comparison tests.In all groups there were alterations in colour values; however, ΔE< 3.7 and the colour changes were undetectable.

INTRODUCTION: The finishing and polishing phases are essential to improve smoothness and shining on the surface of acrylic resins used to make removable orthodontic appliances. A good surface finishing reduces roughness, which facilitates hygiene, prevents staining and provides greater comfort to the patients. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper was to analyze the changes on surface morphology of acrylic resins during finishing and polishing phases. METHODS: Thirty discs (10 mm in diameter and 5 mm in length) were made with acrylic resin and randomly divided into ten groups. The control group did not receive any treatment while the other groups received gradual finishing and polishing. The last group received the entire finishing and polishing procedures. Surface morphology was qualitatively analyzed through scanning electron microscopy and quantitatively analyzed through a laser profilometer test. RESULTS: The acrylic resin surfaces without treatment showed bubbles which were not observed in the subsequent phases. Wearing out with multilaminated burs, finishing with wood sandpaper and finishing with water sandpaper resulted in surfaces with decreasing irregularities. The surfaces that were polished with pumice and with low abrasive liquids showed high superficial smoothness. CONCLUSION: Highly smooth acrylic resin surfaces can be obtained after mechanical finishing and polishing performed with multilaminated burs, wood sandpaper, water sandpaper, pumice and low abrasive liquids.

Lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) is of interest as a coolant in the design of fast reactors and also as both a coolant and a spallation target in proposed transmutation schemes for radioactive waste. However, liquid metal corrosion to the structural materials can proceed via various processes: species dissolution, formation of the inter-metallic compounds at the steels/liquid metal interface... It is known that the formation of an oxide scale on a steel surface can protect it dissolution attack by liquid LBE. The variables that play an important role on the feasibility of the formation of an oxide layer and on its protective characteristics for steels in contact with LBE are oxygen content, temperature, materials composition and evolution with time, but also surface state of steels prior to testing or weld joints, being these parameters not very widely studied. For the study of the influence of the surface finishing, specimens with different surface states were prepared (as-received, grinded, grinded and polished and electrolitically polished). These treatments gave to the materials a different degree of cold working, the higher for the mechanised samples and the lowest for the electrolitically polished. Tests were carried out at 500 and 550°C from 100 to 2000 hours with two different H2/H2O ratios: 3 and 0.03. The general conclusion is that the effect of surface finishing on the corrosion/protection processes is not significant for the conditions tested.

The fatigue behaviour of an AlSi10Mg alloy processed by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) and subjected to different surface finishing processes was investigated paying special attention to the residual defects on the surface and the dominant fatigue failure mechanisms. Roughness measurements and qualitative surface morphology analysis showed smooth surfaces in the case of vibro-finishing and machining followed by polishing. The fatigue performance did not reveal to be directly related to surface roughness, but residual intrusions left on the finished surfaces. Post-mortem analysis showed single- or multiple-crack nucleation from pores opened on the surface, un-melted powders, or spatters considered as typical L-PBF defects. A fatigue limit of 195 MPa for machined and polished samples was obtained by substantial removal of surface and subsurface defects.
