Microbial Reduction and Quality of Stored Date Fruits Treated by Electrolyzed Water

An effective and eco-friendly technology is needed to prevent postharvest loss of onion bulbs during cold storage. This study investigated the effect of gaseous ozone on the decay and quality of onion bulbs during storage at 2 °C and 70% relative humidity for two months. Gaseous ozone was adjusted to a concentration of 1.27 ± 0.024 ppm in the storage room by generating a high voltage discharge in air. After two months of storage, gaseous ozone significantly reduced the counts of aerobic bacteria (e.g., Rahnella aquatilis) and fungi (e.g., yeast and mold) in the onion bulbs by 4 log (CFU g−1) and 0.92 log (CFU g−1) compared with those of an untreated control, respectively. The microbial reduction by gaseous ozone resulted in a lower rotten rate of the onion bulbs, which was less than 20.0% compared with that of the untreated control. Moreover, the ozone exposure extended the storage life of the onion bulbs by delaying its color change and softening during storage. Our results suggest that gaseous ozone can control the decay of onion bulbs safely during storage.

Abstract In this study, the characteristics of pollens of eight date pollinating cultivars including ‘Shahani’, ‘Zahedi’, ‘Beraem’, ‘Faryab’, ‘Sheikhali’, ‘Fard’ and ‘Jarvis’ were compared and their metaxenia effects on secondary metabolites, enzymes and other biochemical compounds of ‘Piarom’ date fruit was investigated in four stages of fruit growth and development. The pollens of these eight pollinating cultivars were compared in terms of carbohydrate, protein starch, total phenol, flavonoids, pectin methyl esterase, and amylase enzymes. According to the results, , pollens of ‘Sheikhali’, ‘Fard’, ‘Zahedi’ and ‘Shahani’ cultivars had higher amounts of the above compounds than other cultivars. Regarding the effect of pollens on the composition of ‘Piarom’ date fruit, ‘Fard’ and ‘Sheikhali’ pollens produced the lowest amount of soluable tannin, which resulted in better quality of ‘Piarom’ date fruits. Pollens of ‘Sheikhali’ and ‘Fard’ cultivars produced the highest amounts of glucose and fructose in the fruit. In relation to sucrose, ‘Jarvis’ and ‘Shikhali’ were the best. Pollens of ‘Sheikhali’ and ‘Fard’ cultivars caused the lowest amount of chlorophyll in different stages of fruit growth, indicating better decomposition of fruit chlorophyll and, as a result, better fruit quality. Pollens of ‘Sheikhali’ and ‘Fard’ cultivars produced the highest amount of secondary metabolites such as total phenol, carotenoids and anthocyanin at different stages of ‘Piarom’ date fruit development. Pollens of ‘Fard’ and ‘Sheikhali’ cultivars produced the highest levels of polygalacturonase, cellulase and invertase enzymes at different stages of ‘Piarom’ date fruit growth. Regarding cellulase enzyme, ‘Zahedi’ cultivar produced more ‘cellulase’ in fruit than ‘Sheikhali’. In general, the pollens of ‘Fard’ and ‘Sheikhali, in comparison with other cultivars, improved the quantity and quality of ‘Piarom’ date fruit, due to their metaxenia properties.

Introduction: To understand the increased fruit content of soluble proteins, sugars, certain enzymes activities, and certain polyphenols in context to date fruit ripening. Materials and Methods: The study collected four varieties of date fruits from a farm in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In it, 10-14-day intervals separated the various stages of maturity. The process of sample preparation and extraction includes the samples of fruits at different stages of maturation. Results and Discussion: The Polyphenols oxidize activity appeared to decline with further maturation of date fruit. There was an increase in the protein content and the reducing sugar in all varieties of dates. The changes in the total sugar and reducing sugar occurred due to the increased enzyme’s activity. Conclusion: The reducing sugar increased in all varieties of the date fruit. The coordination of the enzyme might influence the quality of the ripening of date fruits.

Abstract Purpose The effect of different initial carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratios on the prevalence of Salmonella spp., fecal coliforms and helminth eggs over composts produced from several mixtures of maize straw (S) and dairy manure (M) was investigated. Methods Four C/N ratios (21, 22, 27, and 38) were evaluated, including one with manure only (C/N 21). The composting process was performed under field conditions in northern Mexico. Results The process lasted 51 days; Salmonella spp. was reduced 1–2 log (> 94%) in most treatments, except for the C/N ratio of 27 which achieved < 1 log reduction (about 35%). Fecal coliforms elimination was 3–4 log (> 99%) in all treatments while helminth eggs achieved < 1 log (72–87%, depending on treatment). In this study, the mixture with initial C/N ratio of 22 (25% S + 75% M), which had the lowest amount of straw, resulted in the highest elimination of Salmonella spp., fecal coliforms, and helminth eggs. This mix complied with current Mexican sanitary regulations for compost use. The composts produced from the other C/N ratios complied only with the limits for one or two of the microorganisms that were analyzed. Conclusions The initial C/N ratios in compost from straw and manure influences microbial reduction. The final C/N of the mixes ranged from 14 to 16, indicative of stable compost. Compared to fecal coliforms, Salmonella spp. and helminth eggs were more resilient.
