Influence of Stator Clocking on the Unsteady Three-Dimensional Flow in a Two-Stage Turbine

To give insight into the influence of the clocking and the stator–rotor interaction, the unsteady three-dimensional (3D) flow through a two-stage turbine is simulated numerically, using a time marching Navier–Stokes computer code with a sliding mesh approach. A stator clocking is applied to the second stator vane over several circumferential positions. The numerical results are compared with the experimental one to check the availability of the code. Clocking effects on the turbine performance, wake trajectories, and outlet flow field are focused. A relative efficiency variation of about 0.52% is concluded among clocking positions. A link between the turbine efficiency and the wake trajectories on the midspan is shown based on the presented clocking analysis in the 3D unsteady flow field. The detailed illustration of the outlet flow field shows that the influence of the clocking at the outlet is focused on the temperature distribution.

A study on the effects of the axial gap between stator and rotor upon the stage performance and flow field of a single axial flow turbine stage is presented in this paper. Three axial gaps were tested, which were achieved by moving the stator vane in the axial direction while keeping the disk cavity constant. The effect of the axial gap was investigated at two different conditions, that is design and off-design conditions. The unsteady three-dimensional flow field was analyzed by time-accurate RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes) simulations. The simulation results were compared with the experiments, in which total pressure and the time-averaged flow field upstream and downstream of the rotor were obtained by five-hole probe measurements. The effect of the axial gap was confirmed in the endwall regions, and obtained relatively at off-design condition. The turbine stage efficiency was improved almost linearly by reducing the axial gap at the off-design condition.

This paper presents the design of a highly loaded transonic two-stage fan using several advanced three-dimensional blading techniques including forward sweep and “hub bending” in rotors and several bowed configurations in stators. The effects of these blading techniques on the performance of the highly loaded transonic two-stage fan were investigated on the basis of three-dimensional Navier-Stokes predictions. The results indicate that forward sweep has insignificant impact on the total pressure ratio and adiabatic efficiency of the fan. The throttling range of the fan is found to be improved by forward sweep because the shock in the forward swept rotor is expelled later upstream to the leading edge than that in the unswept one. Hub bending design technique increases the efficiency in the hub region of R1 due to the reduction of the low momentum zone in the hub region near the trailing edge. The stator vane design has a pronounced impact on the performance of the fan. The total pressure ratio, adiabatic efficiency, and stall margin of the schemes with the bowed vanes are increased significantly compared to the scheme with the straight vanes. The large corner stall in the straight S1 vane is reduced effectively by the bowed S1 vanes. Moreover, the strong corner stall in the straight S2 vane is fully eliminated by the bowed S2 vanes. Among the bowed vane schemes, the scheme with positive bowed (P. B.) hub and negative bowed (N. B.) tip vanes has the best efficiency and stall margin performances thanks to the superiority of the performance over the midspan regions of the bowed vanes.

An experimental investigation concerning tip flow field unsteadiness was performed for a high-performance, state-of-the-art transonic compressor rotor. Casing-mounted high frequency response pressure transducers were used to indicate both the ensemble averaged and time varying flow structure present in the tip region of the rotor at four different operating points at design speed. The ensemble averaged information revealed the shock structure as it evolved from a dual shock system at open throttle to an attached shock at peak efficiency to a detached orientation at near stall. Steady three-dimensional Navier Stokes analysis reveals the dominant flow structures in the tip region in support of the ensemble averaged measurements. A tip leakage vortex is evident at all operating points as regions of low static pressure and appears in the same location as the vortex found in the numerical solution. An unsteadiness parameter was calculated to quantify the unsteadiness in the tip cascade plane. In general, regions of peak unsteadiness appear near shocks and in the area interpreted as the shock-tip leakage vortex interaction. Local peaks of unsteadiness appear in mid-passage downstream of the shock-vortex interaction. Flow field features not evident in the ensemble averaged data are examined via a Navier-Stokes solution obtained at the near stall operating point.

The present contribution addresses the aerothermal, experimental, and computational studies of a trapezoidal cross-sectional model simulating a trailing edge cooling cavity with one rib-roughened wall. The flow is fed through tilted slots on one side wall and exits through straight slots on the opposite side wall. The flow field aerodynamics is investigated in Part I of the paper. The reference Reynolds number is defined at the entrance of the test section and set at 67,500 for all the experiments. A qualitative flow model is deduced from surface-streamline flow visualizations. Two-dimensional particle image velocimetry measurements are performed in several planes around midspan of the channel and recombined to visualize and quantify three-dimensional flow features. The crossing-jets issued from the tilted slots are characterized and the jet-rib interaction is analyzed. Attention is drawn to the motion of the flow deflected by the rib-roughened wall and impinging on the opposite smooth wall. The experimental results are compared with the numerical predictions obtained from the finite volume Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes solver, CEDRE.

A numerical method for calculation of strong radiation for two-dimensional reactive air flow field is developed. The governing equations are taken to be two dimensional, compressible Reynolds-average Navier-Stokes and species transport equations. Also, radiation heat flux in energy equation is evaluated using a model of discrete ordinate method. The model used S4 approximation to reduce the governing system of integro-differential equations to coupled set of partial differential equations. A multiband model is used to construct absorption coefficients. Tangent slab approximation is assumed to determine the characteristic parameters needed in the Discrete Ordinates Method. The turbulent diffusion and heat fluxes are modeled by Baldwin and Lomax method. The flow solution is obtained with a fully implicit time marching method. A thermochemical nonequilibrium formulation appropriate to hypersonic transitional flow of air is presented. The method is compared with existing experimental results and good agreement is observed.

Time-averaged Stanton number and surface-pressure distributions are reported for the first-stage vane row and the first-stage blade row of the Rocketdyne Space Shuttle Main Engine two-stage fuel-side turbine. These measurements were made at 10, 50, and 90 percent span on both the pressure and suction surfaces of the component. Stanton-number distributions are also reported for the second-stage vane at 50 percent span. A shock tube is used as a short-duration source of heated and pressurized air to which the turbine is subjected. Platinum thin-film gages are used to obtain the heat-flux measurements and miniature silicone-diaphragm pressure transducers are used to obtain the surface pressure measurements. The first-stage vane Stanton number distributions are compared with predictions obtained using a quasi-three dimensional Navier–Stokes solution and a version of STAN5. This same N–S technique was also used to obtain predictions for the first blade and the second vane.

To give insight into the clocking effect and its influence on the wake transportation and its interaction, the unsteady three-dimensional flow through a 1.5-stage axial low pressure turbine is simulated numerically using a density-correction based, Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations commercial CFD code. The 2nd stator clocking is applied over ten equal tangential positions. The results show that the harmonic blade number ratio is an important factor affecting the clocking effect. The clocking effect has a very small influence on the turbine efficiency in this investigation. The efficiency difference between the maximum and minimum configuration is nearly 0.1%. The maximum efficiency can be achieved when the 1st stator wake enters the 2nd stator passage near blade suction surface and its adjacent wake passes through the 2nd stator passage close to blade pressure surface. The minimum efficiency appears if the 1st stator wake impinges upon the leading edge of the 2nd stator and its adjacent wake of the 1st stator passed through the mid-channel in the 2nd stator.

A previously verified axisymmetric Navier-Stokes computer code was extended for three-dimensional computation of eccentric rim seals of almost any configuration. All compressibility and thermal/momentum interaction effects are completely, included, and the temperature, pressure and Reynolds number of the mainstream, coolant stream and turbine wheel are fixed at actual engine conditions. Regardless of the seal eccentricity, both ingress and egress are found between θ = −30° and 100°. which encompasses the location of maximum radial clearance at θ = 0°. All other θ locations within the rim seal show only egress, as does the concentric basecase for all circumferential locations. Further, the maximum ingress occurs near θ = 30° for all eccentricities. This is found to produce a blade root/retainer temperature rise from the concentric case of 390 percent at 50 percent eccentricity and a 77 percent rise at 7.5 percent eccentricity. In addition, the nature of an increased eccentricity causing a decreased seal effectiveness is examined, along with the corresponding increase of cavity-averaged temperature.
