Development of a Tip-Leakage Flow—Part 1: The Flow Over a Range of Reynolds Numbers

An extensive experimental investigation was carried out to examine the tip-leakage flow on ducted propulsors. The flow field around three-bladed, ducted rotors operating in uniform inflow was measured in detail with three-dimensional laser Doppler velocimetry and planar particle imaging velocimetry. Two geometrically similar, ducted rotors were tested over a Reynolds number range from 0.7×106 to 9.2×106 in order to determine how the tip-leakage flow varied with Reynolds number. An identification procedure was used to discern and quantify regions of concentrated vorticity in instantaneous flow fields. Multiple vortices were identified in the wake of the blade tip, with the largest vortex being associated with the tip-leakage flow, and the secondary vortices being associated with the trailing edge vortex and other blade-wake vortices. The evolution of identified vortex quantities with downstream distance is examined. It was found that the strength and core size of the vortices are weakly dependent on Reynolds number, but there are indications that they are affected by variations in the inflowing wall boundary layer on the duct. The core size of the tip-leakage vortex does not vary strongly with varying boundary layer thickness on the blades. Instead, its dimension is on the order of the tip clearance. There is significant flow variability for all Reynolds numbers and rotor configurations. Scaled velocity fluctuations near the axis of the primary vortex increase significantly with downstream distance, suggesting the presence of spatially uncorrelated fine scale secondary vortices and the possible existence of three-dimensional vortex-vortex interactions.

To explain the effect of tip leakage flow on the performance of an axial-flow transonic compressor, the compressors with different rotor tip clearances were studied numerically. The results show that as the rotor tip clearance increases, the leakage flow intensity is increased, the shock wave position is moved backward, and the interaction between the tip leakage vortex and shock wave is intensified, while that between the boundary layer and shock wave is weakened. Most of all, the stall mechanisms of the compressors with varying rotor tip clearances are different. The clearance leakage flow is the main cause of the rotating stall under large rotor tip clearance. However, the stall form for the compressor with half of the designed tip clearance is caused by the joint action of the rotor tip stall caused by the leakage flow spillage at the blade leading edge and the whole blade span stall caused by the separation of the boundary layer of the rotor and the stator passage. Within the investigated varied range, when the rotor tip clearance size is half of the design, the compressor performance is improved best, and the peak efficiency and stall margin are increased by 0.2% and 3.5%, respectively.

Numerical simulations are carried out to investigate flow structures in the tip region for an axial transonic rotor, with careful comparisons with the experimental results. The calculated performance curve and two-dimensional (2D) flow structures observed at casing, such as the shock wave, the expansion wave around the leading edge, and the tip leakage flow at peak efficiency and near-stall points, are all captured by simulation results, which agree with the experimental data well. An in-depth analysis of three-dimensional flow structures reveals three features: (1) there exists an interface between the incoming main flow and the tip leakage flow, (2) in this rotor the tip leakage flows along the blade chord can be divided into at least two parts according to the blade loading distribution, and (3) each part plays a different role on the stall inception mechanism in the leakage flow dominated region. A model of three-dimensional flow structures of tip leakage flow is thus proposed accordingly. In the second half of this paper, the unsteady features of the tip leakage flows, which emerge at the operating points close to stall, are presented and validated with experiment observations. The numerical results in the rotor relative reference frame are first converted to the casing absolute reference frame before compared with the measurements in experiments. It is found that the main frequency components of simulation at absolute reference frame match well with those measured in the experiments. The mechanism of the unsteadiness and its significance to stability enhancement design are then discussed based on the details of the flow field obtained through numerical simulations.

Tip leakage flow through the small gap between the blade tip of a turbine and the casing endwall reduces the aerodynamic performance. String-type dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuators made of silicone printed-circuit board were used for the active control of the tip leakage flow of a linear turbine cascade. Sinusoidal voltage excitation with amplitude varying from 4 kV to 6 kV (peak-to-peak voltage: 8 kVp-p to 12 kVp-p) and fixed frequency of 10 kHz was applied to the plasma actuators. The two-dimensional velocity field in the blade passage was estimated by particle image velocimetry (PIV) under the very low Reynolds number conditions of Re = 7.1 × 103 and 1.42 × 104. The tip leakage flow was reduced by the flow control using plasma actuators. The high turbulence intensity region caused by the tip leakage flow was also reduced. For the quantitative comparisons, the displacement thickness of the absolute velocity distributions was examined. By the flow control of the plasma actuators, the displacement thickness at tip-side gradually decreased as the input voltage increased. Although three types of plasma actuators were used, with thin, thick, and flat electrodes and different ratios of discharge area, the differences in their effect were negligible. The reason for these very small differences in effect is the wide spread of the plasma discharge from the encapsulated electrode in the plasma actuator to the exposed electrode of the blade tip. At the relatively high Reynolds number condition of Re = 1.42 × 104, the effect of the plasma actuator was smaller than that at the lower Reynolds number condition of Re = 7.1 × 103.

Abstract Both LES and DDES are conducted in a low-Reynolds number tip leakage flow model. The DDES uses the SST kω model and employs the same grid with the LES, but the turbulence field diverges from the LES result. Referring to the comparison between LES and DDES, a modification of the zonal function in the DDES model is proposed, which enhances the dissipation of the modeled turbulence thus promote the transition to fully LES in the tip region when the mesh is fine enough. It can generate much finer vortex structure than the original model, including the primary streamwise vortex, induced vortices and the vortex fragments after breakdown. The modification fixes the underestimation of the vorticity and pressure drop at the formation stage of the tip leakage vortex, and generates more reasonable turbulence field and energy spectra. The modified model is introduced to a real rotor simulation at engineering Reynolds number. Compared with the original model on both mean flow field and turbulence field, the modified model shows favorable agreements with the measurements. The study also gives a practical example of using the tip leakage flow model in turbulence modeling.

The 3-D viscous flowfield in the rotor passage of a single-stage turbine, including the tip-leakage flow, is computed using a Navier-Stokes procedure. A grid-generation code has been developed to obtain embedded H grids inside the rotor tip gap. The blade tip geometry is accurately modeled without any “pinching”. Chien’s low-Reynolds-number k-ε model is employed for turbulence closure. Both the mean-flow and turbulence transport equations are integrated in time using a four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme. The computational results for the entire turbine rotor flow, particularly the tip-leakage flow and the secondary flows, are interpreted and compared with available data. The predictions for major features of the flowfield are found to be in good agreement with the data. Complicated interactions between the tip-clearance flows and the secondary flows are examined in detail. The effects of endwall rotation on the development and interaction of secondary and tip-leakage vortices are also analyzed.

The tip leakage flow characteristics for flat and squealer turbine tip geometries are studied in the von Karman Institute Isentropic Light Piston Compression Tube facility, CT-2, at different Reynolds and Mach number conditions for a fixed value of the tip gap in a nonrotating, linear cascade arrangement. To the best knowledge of the authors, these are among the very few high-speed tip flow data for the flat tip and squealer tip geometries. Oil flow visualizations and static pressure measurements on the blade tip, blade surface, and corresponding endwall provide insight to the structure of the two different tip flows. Aerodynamic losses are measured for the different tip arrangements, also. The squealer tip provides a significant decrease in velocity through the tip gap with respect to the flat tip blade. For the flat tip, an increase in Reynolds number causes an increase in tip velocity levels, but the squealer tip is relatively insensitive to changes in Reynolds number.

The leading-edge boundary layer (LEBL) in the front part of swept airplane wings is prone to three-dimensional subcritical instability, which may lead to bypass transition. The resulting increase of airplane drag and fuel consumption implies a negative environmental impact. In the present paper, we present a temporal biglobal secondary stability analysis (SSA) and direct numerical simulations (DNS) of this flow to investigate a subcritical transition mechanism. The LEBL is modelled by the swept Hiemenz boundary layer (SHBL), with and without wall suction. We introduce a pair of steady, counter-rotating, streamwise vortices next to the attachment line as a generic primary disturbance. This generates a high-speed streak, which evolves slowly in the streamwise direction. The SSA predicts that this flow is unstable to secondary, time-dependent perturbations. We report the upper branch of the secondary neutral curve and describe numerous eigenmodes located inside the shear layers surrounding the primary high-speed streak and the vortices. We find secondary flow instability at Reynolds numbers as low as$Re\approx 175$, i.e. far below the linear critical Reynolds number$Re_{crit}\approx 583$of the SHBL. This secondary modal instability is confirmed by our three-dimensional DNS. Furthermore, these simulations show that the modes may grow until nonlinear processes lead to breakdown to turbulent flow for Reynolds numbers above$Re_{tr}\approx 250$. The three-dimensional mode shapes, growth rates, and the frequency dependence of the secondary eigenmodes found by SSA and the DNS results are in close agreement with each other. The transition Reynolds number$Re_{tr}\approx 250$at zero suction and its increase with wall suction closely coincide with experimental and numerical results from the literature. We conclude that the secondary instability and the transition scenario presented in this paper may serve as a possible explanation for the well-known subcritical transition observed in the leading-edge boundary layer.

A three-dimensional computation was conducted to understand effects of the inlet boundary layer thickness on the internal flow and the loss characteristics in a low-speed axial compressor operating at the design condition (φ = 85%) and near stall condition (φ = 65%). At the design condition, independent of the inlet boundary layer thickness, flows in the axial compressor show similar characteristics such as the pressure distribution, size of hub corner-stall, tip leakage flow trajectory, limiting streamlines on the blade suction surface, etc. But, as the load is increased, for the thick inlet boundary layer at hub and casing, the hub corner stall grows to make a large separation region between the hub and suction surface, and the tip leakage flow is more vortical than that observed in the case with thin inlet boundary layer and has the critical point where the trajectory of the tip leakage flow is suddenly turned to the downstream. For the thin inlet boundary layer, the hub corner stall decays to form the thick boundary layer from hub to midspan on the suction surface owing to the blockage of the tip leakage flow and the tip leakage flow leans to the circumferential direction more than at the design condition. In addition to these, the severe reverse flow, induced by both boundary layers on the blade surface and the tip leakage flow, can be found to act as the blockage of flows near the casing, resulting in a heavy loss. As a result of these differences of the internal flow made by the different inlet boundary layer thickness, the spanwise distribution of the total loss is changed dramatically. At the design condition, total pressure losses for two different boundary layers are almost alike in the core flow region but the larger losses are generated at both hub and tip when the inlet boundary layer is thin. At the near stall condition, however, total loss for thick inlet boundary layer is found to be greater than that for thin inlet boundary layer on most of the span except the region near the hub and casing. In order to analyze effects of inlet boundary layer thickness on total loss in detail, total loss is scrutinized through three major loss categories available in a subsonic axial compressor such as profile loss, tip leakage loss and endwall loss.

The current paper reports on investigations with an aim to advance the understanding of the flow field near the casing of a small-scale high-speed axial flow compressor rotor. Steady three dimensional viscous flow calculations are applied to obtain flow fields at various operating conditions. To demonstrate the validity of the computation, the numerical results are first compared with available measured data. Then, the numerically obtained flow fields are analyzed to identify the behavior of tip leakage flow, and the mechanism of blockage generation arising from flow interactions between the tip clearance flow, the blade/casing wall boundary layers, and non-uniform main flow. The current investigation indicates that the “breakdown” of the tip leakage vortex occurs inside the rotor passage at the near stall condition. The vortex “breakdown” results in the low-energy fluid accumulating on the casing wall spreads out remarkably, which causes a sudden growth of the casing wall boundary layer having a large blockage effect. A low-velocity region develops along the tip clearance vortex at the near stall condition due to the vortex “breakdown”. As the mass flow rate is further decreased, this area builds up rapidly and moves upstream. This area prevents incoming flow from passing through the pressure side of the passage and forces the tip leakage flow to spill into the adjacent blade passage from the pressure side at the leading edge. It is found that the tip leakage flow exerts little influence on the development of the blade suction surface boundary layer even at the near stall condition.
