This paper presents a new simple technique for evaluating sway-added mass and the impact energy absorbed by fenders and dolphins when maneuvering a tanker to a jetty in a shallow water environment. The technique is based on the law of energy conservation, i.e., that the kinetic energy of the berthing ship is totally absorbed by the fenders during the compression phase. A time-averaged zero-frequency sway-added mass in shallow water is used in the evaluation of the kinetic energy. The theoretically calculated values of maximum deflection and fender loads are presented and compared with available experimental and analytical data. Discussion of the present method with respect to its degree of practical usefulness is given, while indicating problem areas.

AbstractShallow water acoustics provide a means for monitoring and surveillance of near-shore environments. This paper describes the current and future capabilities of the low- to high-frequency Hawaii Experimental Acoustics Range (HEAR) that was designed to facilitate a wide range of different shallow water acoustics experiments and allow researchers from various institutions to test various array components and configurations. HEAR is a portable facility that consists of multiple hydrophones (12‐16) cabled independently to a common central node. The design allows for variable array configurations and deployments in three modes: experimental (off boats and piers), autonomous, and cabled. An application of HEAR is illustrated by the results from a deployment at Makai Research Pier, Oahu, Hawaii. In this deployment, HEAR was configured as a long-baseline range of two volumetric subarrays to study passive acoustic tracking capabilities in a shallow water environment.

Aldebarania arenitea (Astropectinidae; Asteroidea; Echinodermata) is described from the Rocky Point Member of the Maastrichtian (Upper Cretaceous) Peedee Formation of North Carolina. A turbulent, shallow-water environment is suggested by sedimentary features, a diverse marine fauna, and the morphology of Aldebarania. Aldebarania appears to be a partial ecological equivalent of living Astropecten and Luidia; however, phylogenetic relationships within the Astropectinidae are unstudied and the origin of similarities is unknown.

ABSTRACTTwenty-seven species assigned to 20 genera of trilobites are described from Feilaishi in Guizhou Province, the type section of the Shihtzupu Formation in S W China. They occur in association with a sparse graptolite fauna including Glyptograptus teretiusculus. Eleven taxa are recorded here for the first time. Much new morphological information is provided regarding previously known species and 3 lectotypes are selected. The trilobites are largely endemic and indicate a quiet and comparatively shallow water environment

Just as in deep-water sedimentary environments, productive source rocks can be developed in an evaporitic platform, where claystones are interbedded with evaporites and carbonates. However, the impact of the paleoenvironment on the organic matter enrichment of shallow water source rocks in an evaporite series has not been well explored. In this study, two wells in the central uplift of the Tarim Basin were systematically sampled and analyzed for a basic geochemical study, including major elements, trace elements, and total organic carbon (TOC), to understand the relationship between TOC and the paleoenvironmental parameters, such as paleosalinity, redox, paleoclimate, paleo-seawater depth, and paleoproductivity. The results show that the Lower–Middle Cambrian mainly developed in a fluctuating salinity, weak anoxic to anoxic, continuous dry and hot, and proper shallow water environment. The interfingering section of evaporites, carbonates, and claystones of the Awatag Fm. have higher paleoproductivity and higher enrichment of organic matter. Paleosalinity, redox, paleoclimate, paleo-seawater depth, and paleoproductivity jointly control the organic matter enrichment of shallow water source rocks in the evaporite series. The degree of enrichment of organic matter in shallow water source rocks first increases and then decreases with the increase in paleosalinity. All the samples with high content of organic matter come from the shallower environment of the Awatag Fm.
