This paper presents a method for computing the motion and decay of a large dusty, buoyant thermal (cloud) carried by a vortex ring generated from a strong near ground explosion and ascending in an inhomogeneous atmosphere. A system of equations is derived describing the motion of the vortex ring, the thermal, and the pollutants which consist of numerous solid spherical particles. The interior properties and the trajectories of the thermal and the pollutants are obtained. The numerical solution for the thermal trajectory is in excellent agreement with experiment.

The article deals with the problem of consistent initial values of the system of equations of motion which has the form of the system of differential-algebraic equations. Direct treating the equations of mechanical systems with particular properties enables to study the system of DAE in a more flexible approach. Algorithms and examples are shown in order to illustrate the considered technique.

In the present paper, the post-buckling response of an axially stressed clamped-clamped actuator, modeled as a beam and subjected to a symmetric electrostatic field is analyzed. An analytical approximate method, namely the Optimal Homotopy Asymptotic Method (OHAM) is applied to the governing nonlinear integro-differential equation. The analytical results obtained through the proposed procedure show excellent agreement with numerical solution, proving the validity of the proposed procedure, which is simple and easy to use.

The possibility of population gratings creation in a three-level resonant medium using a pair of unipolar attosecond pulses that do not overlap in the medium is studied theoretically. It is shown that the results of the approximate solution of the Schrödinger equation agree with the results of the numerical solution of the system of equations for the density matrix of a three-level medium, the parameters of which are close to the parameters of atomic vapors of rubidium.

ABSTRACTA modified sol-gel technique was used to synthesize nanocomposites of Ni:SiO2 which resulted in Ni nanoparticles embedded in a SiO2 amorphous matrix. Transmission electron microscopy TEM analysis were performed to study the structure and morphology of the magnetic powders. The Ni particles were found to have a good dispersion and a controlled particle size distribution, with average particle radius of ∼ 3 nm. A detailed characterization of the magnetic properties was done through magnetization measurements M(T,H) in applied magnetic fields up to ± 7 T and for temperatures ranging from 2 to 300 K. The superparamagnetic (SPM) behavior of these metallic nanoparticles was inferred from the temperature dependence of the magnetization. The blocking temperature TB, as low as 20 K, was found to be dependent on Ni concentration, increasing with increasing Ni content. The SPM behavior above the blocking temperature TB was confirmed by the collapse of M/MS vs. H/T data in universal curves. These curves were fitted to a log-normal weighted Langevin function allowing us to determine the distribution of magnetic moments. Using the fitted magnetic moments and the Ni saturation magnetization, the radii of spherical particles were determined to be close to ∼ 3 nm, in excellent agreement with TEM analysis. Also, magnetic hysteresis loops were found to be symmetric along the field axis with no shift via exchange bias, suggesting that Ni particles are free from an oxide layer. In addition, for the most diluted samples, the magnetic behavior of these Ni nanoparticles is in excellent agreement with the predictions of randomly oriented and noninteracting magnetic particles. This was confirmed by the temperature dependence of the coercivity field that obeys the relation HC(T) = HC0 [1-(T/TB)1/2] below TB with HC0 ∼ 780 Oe.

This work describes the process of mass transfer which takes place when a fluid flows past a soluble surface buried in a packed bed of small inert spherical particles of uniform voidage. The fluid is assumed to have uniform velocity far from the buried surface and different surface geometries are considered; namely, cylinder in cross flow and in flow aligned with the axis, flat surface aligned with the flow and sphere. The differential equations describing fluid flow and mass transfer by advection and diffusion in the interstices of the bed are presented and the method for obtaining their numerical solution is indicated. From the near surface concentration fields, given by the numerical solution, rates of mass transfer from the surface are computed and expressed in the form of a Sherwood number (Sh). The dependence between Sh and the Peclet number for flow past the surface is then established for each of the flow geometries. Finally, equations are derived for the concentration contour surfaces at a large distance from the soluble solids, by substituting the information obtained on mass transfer rates in the equation describing solute spreading in uniform flow past a point (or line) source.

We apply non-linear WKB analysis to the study of the string equation. Even though the solutions obtained with this method are not exact, they approximate extremely well the true solutions, as we explicitly show using numerical simulations. “Physical” solutions are seen to be separatrices corresponding to degenerate Riemann surfaces. We obtain an analytic approximation in excellent agreement with the numerical solution found by Parisi et al. for the k=3 case.

The present study proposes two interactive eddy viscosities for the two layers of a plane wall jet where the influence of one layer is considered on the eddy viscosity of the other layer. Using these viscosities, the equations governing the wall jet flow are solved numerically. The flow structure extracted from the numerical solution is found in excellent agreement with the existing literature that justifies a two-layered structure of plane turbulent wall jet.
