Theory of Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics With Application to the Transport Processes in a Solid

The theory of nonequilibrium thermodynamics for inherently irreversible coupled processes is presented and the concept of heat is incorporated appropriately. The theory was applied to the problem of a solid carrying electric and heat currents in the presence of an external magnetic field. The principle of increase of entropy was employed to determine the reversibility or irreversibility of the macroscopic effects involved and to determine the limits on the material’s properties. The dynamic equations show that, in the one-dimensional thermoelectric case, the heat current is not coupled to the electrical phenomenon. In two and three-dimensional cases, the heat current is coupled to the electrical phenomenon only through the influence of the external magnetic field. Areas of disagreement with the literature are pointed out and discussed.

The temperature dependence of spin currents in insulators at the finite temperature near zero Kelvin is theoretically studied. The spin currents are carried by Jordan–Wigner fermions and magnons in one- and three-dimensional insulators. These spin currents are generated by the external magnetic field gradient along the quantization axis and also by the two-particle interaction gradient. In one-dimensional insulators, quantum fluctuations are strong and the spin current carried by Jordan–Wigner fermions shows the stronger dependence on temperatures than the one by magnons.

The relation between authoritarianism and social dominance orientation was analyzed, with authoritarianism measured using a three-dimensional scale. The implicit multidimensional structure (authoritarian submission, conventionalism, authoritarian aggression) of Altemeyer’s (1981, 1988) conceptualization of authoritarianism is inconsistent with its one-dimensional methodological operationalization. The dimensionality of authoritarianism was investigated using confirmatory factor analysis in a sample of 713 university students. As hypothesized, the three-factor model fit the data significantly better than the one-factor model. Regression analyses revealed that only authoritarian aggression was related to social dominance orientation. That is, only intolerance of deviance was related to high social dominance, whereas submissiveness was not.

A simplified analytical form of the on-axis magnetic well and Mercier's criterion for interchange instabilities for arbitrary three-dimensional magnetic field geometries is derived. For this purpose, a near-axis expansion based on a direct coordinate approach is used by expressing the toroidal magnetic flux in terms of powers of the radial distance to the magnetic axis. For the first time, the magnetic well and Mercier's criterion are then written as a one-dimensional integral with respect to the axis arclength. When compared with the original work of Mercier, the derivation here is presented using modern notation and in a more streamlined manner that highlights essential steps. Finally, these expressions are verified numerically using several quasisymmetric and non-quasisymmetric stellarator configurations including Wendelstein 7-X.

We derive an effective spin Hamiltonian for the one-dimensional half-filled asymmetric ionic Hubbard model (IHM) with alternating on-site interaction in the limit of strong repulsion. It is shown that the effective Hamiltonian is that of a spin S = 1/2 anisotropic XXZ Heisenberg chain with alternating next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) and three-spin couplings in the presence of a uniform and a staggered magnetic field.

<p>The study of thermodynamic and biochemical processes of inland water objects using one- and three-dimensional RANS numerical models was carried out both for idealized water bodies and using measurements data. The need to take into account seiche oscillations to correctly reproduce the deepening of the upper mixed layer in one-dimensional (vertical) models is demonstrated. We considered the one-dimensional LAKE model [1] and the three-dimensional model [2, 3, 4] developed at the Research Computing Center of Moscow State University on the basis of a hydrodynamic code combining DNS/LES/RANS approaches for calculating geophysical turbulent flows. The three-dimensional model was supplemented by the equations for calculating biochemical substances by analogy with the one-dimensional biochemistry equations used in the LAKE model.
