This study investigates a V-shaped corrugated carbon foam heat sink for thermal management of electronics with forced air convection. Experiments were conducted to determine the heat sink performance in terms of heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop. The test section, with overall dimensions of 51 mm L×51 mm W×19 mm H, enabled up to 166 W of heat dissipation, and 3280 W/m2 K and 2210 W/m2 K heat transfer coefficients, based on log mean and air inlet temperatures, respectively, at 7.8 m/s air flow speed, and 1320 Pa pressure loss. Compared to a solid carbon foam, the V-shaped corrugated structure enhances the heat transfer, and at the same time reduces the flow resistance. Physical mechanisms underlying the observed phenomena are briefly explained. With benefits that potentially can reduce overall weight, volume, and cost of the air-cooled electronics, the present V-shaped corrugated carbon foam emerges as an alternative heat sink.

Abstract The paper deals with a study of the effect of regulating elements on local values of heat transfer coefficients along shaped heat exchange surfaces with forced air convection. The use of combined methods of heat transfer intensification, i.e. a combination of regulating elements with appropriately shaped heat exchange areas seems to be highly effective. The study focused on the analysis of local values of heat transfer coefficients in indicated cuts, in distances expressed as a ratio x/s for 0; 0.33; 0.66 and 1. As can be seen from our findings, in given conditions the regulating elements can increase the values of local heat transfer coefficients along shaped heat exchange surfaces. An optical method of holographic interferometry was used for the experimental research into temperature fields in the vicinity of heat exchange surfaces. The obtained values correspond very well with those of local heat transfer coefficients αx, recorded in a CFD simulation.

The aim of this investigation was to study automotive disc brake cooling characteristics experimentally using a specially developed spin rig and numerically using finite element (FE) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods. All three modes of heat transfer (conduction, convection and radiation) have been analysed along with the design features of the brake assembly and their interfaces. The spin rig proved to be very valuable equipment; experiments enabled the determination of the thermal contact resistance between the disc and wheel carrier. The analyses demonstrated the sensitivity of this mode of heat transfer to clamping pressure. For convective cooling, heat transfer coefficients were measured and very similar results were obtained from spin rig experiments and CFD analyses. The nature of radiative heat dissipation implies substantial e ects at high temperatures. The results indicate substantial change of emissivity throughout the brake application. The influence of brake cooling parameters on the disc temperature has been investigated by FE modelling of a long drag brake application. The thermal power dissipated during the drag brake application has been analysed to reveal the contribution of each mode of heat transfer.

The heat transfer characteristics of FeCrAlY (an iron-based alloy with a melting point of 1510°C sintered foams are presented. The foams have open cells and hollow cell ligaments. The foam samples had a range of cell sizes (1-3 mm) and relative densities (4.6-12.5 percent). Foam cores sandwiched between two conductive substrates were subjected to forced air convection with a constant input heat flux. The volumetric heat transfer coefficient is shown to depend on the effective porosity. Heat transfer is predominantly due to the increased flow mixing that the foam structure promotes. With higher-conductivity materials, the foam also acts to increase the heat transfer by providing an extended surface area, but this is not a strong effect in FeCrAlY foams owing to the low thermal conductivity of 16 W/m K. The FeCrAlY foam is compared with copper foam, and the latter effect is more significant.

Al was sputtered onto four substrates: nylon, polyester, cotton/polyester, and shape memory polyurethane nanoweb, and the heat-transfer characteristics of the resultant materials were investigated by surface temperature measurements. The thickness of the Al layer increased linearly with sputtering time. The heat-transfer mechanisms of the multilayer systems in terms of conduction, convection, and radiation were investigated under steady-state conditions using a hot plate as a heat source in contact with Al-sputtered fabrics. The Al-sputtered fabric was placed on the hot plate, which was maintained at 35°C, and exposed to open air, which was maintained at 15°C. The temperatures of the air-facing surfaces of hot plate-Al-fabric-air (i.e., Al-phase-down) and hot plate-fabric-Al-air (i.e., Al-phase-up) systems were used to investigate the heat-transfer mechanism. It was found that heat dissipation to ambient air was much higher for the Al-phase-up system than for the Al-phase-down system. Heat-transfer coefficients of the Al surfaces were calculated and found to increase with the thickness of the Al layer. Furthermore, different conductive thermal resistances were observed for different fabrics prepared with the same Al-sputtering time. Consequently, differences in their thicknesses pore sizes, and thermal conductivities were suggested to have significant effects on their heat-transfer properties.

The results of a study of a new and unique high-performance air-cooled impingement heat sink are presented. An extensive numerical investigation of the heat sink performance is conducted and is verified by experimental data. The study is relevant to cooling of high-power chips and modules in air-cooled environments and applies to workstations or mainframes. In the study, a rectangular jet impinges on a set of parallel fins and then turns into cross flow. The effects of the fin thickness, gap nozzle width and fin shape on the heat transfer and pressure drop are investigated. It is found that pressure drop is reduced by cutting the fins in the central impingement zone without sacrificing the heat transfer due to a reduction in the extent of the stagnant zone. A combination of fin thicknesses of the order of 0.5 mm and channel gaps of 0.8 mm with appropriate central cutout yielded heat transfer coefficients over 1500 W/m2 K at a pressure drop of less than 100 N/m2, as is typically available in high-end workstations. A detailed study of flow-through heat sinks subject to the same constraints as the impingement heat sink showed that the flow-through heat sink could not achieve the high heat transfer coefficients at a low pressure drop.

An experimental study of forced convection heat transfer is reported. Direct air cooling of an electronics packaging system is modeled by a channel flow, with an array of uniformly sized and spaced elements attached to one channel wall. The presence of a single or complete row of longitudinally finned heat sinks creates a modified flow pattern. Convective heat transfer rates at downstream positions are measured and compared to that of a plain array (no heat sinks). Heat transfer rates are described in terms of adiabatic heat transfer coefficients and thermal wake functions. Empirical correlations are presented for both variations in Reynolds number (5000 < Re < 20,000) and heat sink geometry. It is found that the presence of a heat sink can both enhance and degrade the heat transfer coefficient at downstream locations, depending on the relative position.

Understanding the transport mechanisms involved in a single droplet impinging on a heated surface is imperative to the complete understanding of droplet and spray cooling. Evidence in the literature suggests that gas assisted sprays and mist flows are more efficient than sprays consisting only of liquid droplets. There has been few if any fundamental studies on gas-assisted droplets or spray cooling, in which a carrier gas or vapor stream propels the droplet to the target surface. The current work extends previous studies of a droplet impinging on a heated surface conducted by the same group from the single phase regime into the evaporative regime. For both regimes, understanding the transport physics due to the heat transfer from the heated surface to the droplet and then by convection and evaporation to the airflow is of fundamental importance. High-speed photography was used to capture the spreading process and yielded results that correlated well with previously published isothermal and single-phase results. The heat transfer was measured with a fitting approach by which the instantaneous temperature profile was matched to an analytic solution to determine the instantaneous value of the centerline heat transfer coefficient. A very large increase in the heat dissipation was observed when compared to previously published single-phase results. Heat transfer was optimized at Reynolds numbers that produced an optimally thin liquid film and high heat and mass transfer coefficients on the surface of the film.

A combined experimental and computational fluid dynamics study of single-phase liquid nitrogen flow through a microscale pin-fin heat sink is presented. Such cryogenic heat sinks find use in applications such as high performance computing and spacecraft thermal management. A circular pin fin heat sink in diameter 5 cm and 250 micrometers in depth was studied herein. Unique features of the heat sink included its variable cross sectional area in the flow direction, variable pin diameters, as well as a circumferential distribution of fluid into the pin fin region. The stainless steel heat sink was fabricated using chemical etching and diffusion bonding. Experimental results indicate that the heat transfer coefficients were relatively unchanged around 2600 W/m2-K for flow rates ranging from 2–4 g/s while the pressure drop increased monotonically with the flow rate. None of the existing correlations in literature on cross flow over a tube bank or micro pin fin heat sinks were able to predict the experimental pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics. However, three dimensional simulations performed using ANSYS Fluent showed reasonable (∼7 percent difference) agreement in the average heat transfer coefficients between experiments and CFD simulations.

A synthetic jet is an intermittent jet which issues through an orifice from a closed cavity over half of an oscillation cycle. Over the other half, the flow is drawn back through the same orifice into the cavity as a sink flow. The flow is driven by an oscillating diaphragm, which is one wall of the cavity. Synthetic jets are widely used for heat transfer enhancement since they are effective in disturbing and thinning thermal boundary layers on surfaces being cooled. They do so by creating an intermittently-impinging flow and by carrying to the hot surface turbulence generated by breakdown of the shear layer at the jet edge. The present study documents experimentally and computationally heat transfer performance of an array of synthetic jets used in a heat sink designed for cooling of electronics. This heat sink is comprised of a series of longitudinal fins which constitute walls of parallel channels. In the present design, the synthetic jet flow impinges on the tips of the fins. In the experiment, one channel of a 20-channel heat sink is tested. A second flow, perpendicular to the jet flow, passes through the channel, drawn by a vacuum system. Surface- and time-averaged heat transfer coefficients for the channel are measured, first with just the channel flow active then with the synthetic jets added. The purpose is to assess heat transfer enhancement realized by the synthetic jets. The multiple synthetic jets are driven by a single diaphragm which, in turn, is activated by a piezoelectrically-driven mechanism. The operating frequency of the jets is 1250 Hz with a cycle-maximum jet velocity of 50 m/s, as measured with a miniature hot-film anemometer probe. In the computational portion of the present paper, diaphragm movement is driven by a piston, simulating the experimental conditions. The flow is computed with a dynamic mesh using the commercial software package ANSYS FLUENT. Computed heat transfer coefficients show a good match with experimental values giving a maximum difference of less than 10%. The effects of amplitude and frequency of the diaphragm motion are documented. Changes in heat transfer due to interactions between the synthetic jet flow and the channel flow are documented in cases of differing channel flow velocities as well as differing jet operating conditions. Heat transfer enhancement obtained by activating the synthetic jets can be as large as 300% when the channel flow is of a low velocity compared to the synthetic jet peak velocity (as low as 4 m/s in the present study).
