Abstract Numerical studies were conducted on the hydrodynamics of a freely falling rigid sphere in bounded and unbounded water domains to investigate the drag coefficient, normalized velocity, pressure coefficient, and skin friction coefficient as a function of dimensionless time. The bounded domain was simulated by bringing the cylindrical water container's wall closer to the impacting rigid sphere and linking it to the blockage ratio (BR), defined as the ratio of the projection area of a freely falling sphere to that of the cross-section area of the cylindrical water container. Six cases of bounded domains (BR= 1%, 25%, 45%, 55%, 65%, and 75%) were studied. However, the unbounded domain was considered with a BR of 0.01%. In addition, the k–ω shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model was employed, and the computed results of the bounded domain were compared with those of other studies on unbounded domains. In the case of the bounded domain, which has a higher value of BR, a substantial reduction in normalized velocity and an increase in the drag coefficient were found. Moreover, the bounded domain yielded a significant increase in the pressure coefficient when the sphere was half-submerged; however, an insignificant effect was found on the skin friction coefficient. In the case of the unbounded domain, a significant reduction in the normalized velocity occurred with a decrease in the Reynold number (Re) whereas the drag coefficient increases with a decrease in Reynolds number.

The dynamic properties of nanofluids have made them an area of intense research during the past few decades. In this article, flow of nonaligned stagnation point nanofluid is investigated. Copper–water based nanofluid in the presence of temperature-dependent viscosity is taken into account. The governing nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equations transformed by partial differential equations are solved numerically by using fourth-order Runge–Kutta–Fehlberg integration technique. Effects of variable viscosity parameter on velocity and temperature profiles of pure fluid and copper–water nanofluid are analyzed, discussed, and presented graphically. Streamlines, skin friction coefficients, and local heat flux of nanofluid under the impact of variable viscosity parameter, stretching ratio, and solid volume fraction of nanoparticles are also displayed and discussed. It is observed that an increase in solid volume fraction of nanoparticles enhances the magnitude of normal skin friction coefficient, tangential skin friction coefficient, and local heat flux. Viscosity parameter is found to have decreasing effect on normal and tangential skin friction coefficients whereas it has a positive influence on local heat flux.

This paper reports the results of an extensive experimental investigation into the mean flow properties of turbulent boundary layers with momentum-thickness Reynolds numbers less than 3000. Zero pressure gradient and favorable pressure gradients were studied. The velocity profiles displayed a logarithmic region even at very low Reynolds numbers (as low as Rθ = 261). The results were independent of the leading-edge shape, and the pin-type turbulent stimulators performed well. It was found that the shape and Clauser parameters were a little higher than the correlation proposed by Coles [10], and the skin friction coefficient was a little lower. The skin friction coefficient behavior could be fitted well by a simple power-law relationship in both zero and favorable pressure gradients.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to focus on the numerical modelling of transient natural convection flow of an incompressible viscous nanofluid past an impulsively started semi-infinite vertical plate with variable surface temperature. Design/methodology/approach – The problem is governed by the coupled non-linear partial differential equations with appropriate boundary conditions. A robust, well-tested, Crank-Nicolson type of implicit finite-difference method, which is unconditionally stable and convergent, is used to solve the governing non-linear set of partial differential equations. Findings – The local and average values of the skin-friction coefficient (viscous drag) and the average Nusselt number (the rate of heat transfer) decreased, while the local Nusselt number increased for all nanofluids, namely, aluminium oxide-water, copper-water, titanium oxide-water and silver-water with an increase in the temperature exponent m. Selecting aluminium oxide as the dispersing nanoparticles leads to the maximum average Nusselt number (the rate of heat transfer), while choosing silver as the dispersing nanoparticles leads to the minimum local Nusselt number compared to the other nanofluids for all values of the temperature exponent m. Also, choosing silver as the dispersing nanoparticles leads to the minimum skin-friction coefficient (viscous drag), while selecting aluminium oxide as the dispersing nanoparticles leads to the maximum skin-friction coefficient (viscous drag) for all values of the temperature exponent m. Research limitations/implications – The Brinkman model for dynamic viscosity and Maxwell-Garnett model for thermal conductivity are employed. The governing boundary layer equations are written according to The Tiwari-Das nanofluid model. A range of nanofluids containing nanoparticles of aluminium oxide, copper, titanium oxide and silver with nanoparticle volume fraction range less than or equal to 0.04 are considered. Practical implications – The present simulations are relevant to nanomaterials thermal flow processing in the chemical engineering and metallurgy industries. This study also provides an important benchmark for further simulations of nanofluid dynamic transport phenomena of relevance to materials processing, with alternative computational algorithms (e.g. finite element methods). Originality/value – This paper is relatively original and illustrates the influence of variable surface temperature on transient natural convection flow of a viscous incompressible nanofluid and heat transfer from an impulsively started semi-infinite vertical plate.

A generalized analysis of the results of numerical and experimental studies of air blowing into a turbulent boundary layer through finely perforated surface consisting of alternating permeable and impermeable sections of varying length providing a sudden change in the flow conditions at the boundaries of these sections is presented. The air blowing coefficient Cb determined by the mass flow rate per unit area of the active perforated sample varied in the range from 0 to 0.008. It is shown that as Cb grows, the maximum reduction in the mean surface skin-friction coefficient CF, which is the value through the permeable area of perforated sample, reaches about 65 %. When keeping the equal mass flow rate Q for all tested combinations, the mean skin-friction coefficient remains constant, independent of geometrical parameters of permeable and impermeable sections. Increasing the length of the last permeable section leads to the growth of relaxation region which is characterized by the reduced skin friction values on the impermeable part of the flat plate.

PurposeThis paper aims to investigate the steady flow and heat transfer of a Cu-Al2O3/water hybrid nanofluid over a nonlinear permeable stretching/shrinking surface with radiation effects. The surface velocity condition is assumed to be of the power-law form with an exponent of 1/3. The governing equations of the problem are converted into a system of similarity equations by using a similarity transformation.Design/methodology/approachThe problem is solved numerically using the boundary value problem solver (bvp4c) in Matlab software. The results of the skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number as well as the velocity and temperature profiles are presented through graphs and tables for several values of the parameters. The effects of these parameters on the flow and heat transfer characteristics are examined and discussed.FindingsResults found that dual solutions exist for a certain range of the stretching/shrinking and suction parameters. The increment of the skin friction coefficient and reduction of the local Nusselt number on the shrinking sheet is observed with the increasing of copper (Cu) nanoparticle volume fractions for the upper branch. The skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number increase when suction parameter is increased for the upper branch. Meanwhile, the temperature increases in the presence of the radiation parameter for both branches.Originality/valueThe problem of Cu-Al2O3/water hybrid nanofluid flow and heat transfer over a nonlinear permeable stretching/shrinking surface with radiation effects is the important originality of the present study where the dual solutions for the flow reversals are obtained.

New optical method for measurement of the local wall shear stress has been developed by using thermo-chromic liquid crystal temperature measurement based on hue [1], [2] of the camera view. The flow field is the fully developed turbulent channel flow. Thin film made of thermo-chromic liquid crystal is placed on the wall. A rectangular shaped obstacle is glued on the film. The obstacle is within a region of buffer layer with height from the wall. Temperature of the film and the obstacle are slightly raised by a heater below the wall. The air flow makes non-uniform temperature distribution and non-uniform color distribution appears on the surface of the film. Relations between hue and local skin friction coefficient were examined in a turbulent air channel flow. It is indicated that a certain hue of a point is varying linearly against the corresponding local skin friction coefficient.

The control of subsonic high lift induced separation on airfoil may improve the flight envelope of current aircraft or even simplify the complex and heavy high-lift devices on commercial airframes. Until now, synthetic jets have proved a really interesting efficiency to delay or remove even leading-edge located separated areas on high-lift configuration but are not efficient for real scale aircrafts. In case of pressure-like separation (i.e. from trailing-edge), synthetic jets can be replaced by so the called “Vortex Generator Jets” which create strong longitudinal vortices that increase mixing in inner boundary layer and consequently the skin friction coefficient is increased to prevent separation. In this study, numerical simulations were undertaken on a generic three dimensional flat plate in order to quantify the effect of the longitudinal vortices on the natural skin friction coefficient. Both counter and co-rotative devices were tested at different exhaust velocities and distances between each others. Finally co-rotative vortex generators jets were tested on a three dimensional generic airfoil ONERA D. Results show a delay of the separation occurence but this solution does not seem to be as robust as synthetic jets. The study of jets spacing with respect to the efficiency of the devices shows a maximum for a given ratio of spacing to exhaust velocity.
