Three Dimensional Flow in a Linear Compressor Cascade at Design Conditions

Experimental data measured upstream, inside and downstream of a large scale linear compressor cascade with NACA 65-1810 blade profile are presented. The flow is surveyed at 15 traverse planes with 14 (in half span) × 24 (in pitch) points inside a passage, and 14 × 33 points downstream exit plane. The measurements are obtained with a small size five hole probe, and wall static pressure taps. It is observed that the three dimensional flow inside and behind the cascade is characterized, not only by the conventional aspects, such as leading edge horseshoe vortices, passage vortices, trailing edge vortex sheet and corner vortices, but also by two spiral node points, formed from the three dimensional separation lines, on suction surface, and the resulting concentrated vortices.

Recently bimodal phenomenon in corner separation has been found by Ma et al. (Experiments in Fluids, 2013, doi:10.1007/s00348-013-1546-y). Through detailed and accurate experimental results of the velocity flow field in a linear compressor cascade, they discovered two aperiodic modes exist in the corner separation of the compressor cascade. This phenomenon reflects the flow in corner separation is high intermittent, and large-scale coherent structures corresponding to two modes exist in the flow field of corner separation. However the generation mechanism of the bimodal phenomenon in corner separation is still unclear and thus needs to be studied further. In order to obtain instantaneous flow field with different unsteadiness and thus to analyse the mechanisms of bimodal phenomenon in corner separation, in this paper detached-eddy simulation (DES) is used to simulate the flow field in the linear compressor cascade where bimodal phenomenon has been found in previous experiment. DES in this paper successfully captures the bimodal phenomenon in the linear compressor cascade found in experiment, including the locations of bimodal points and the development of bimodal points along a line that normal to the blade suction side. We infer that the bimodal phenomenon in the corner separation is induced by the strong interaction between the following two facts. The first is the unsteady upstream flow nearby the leading edge whose angle and magnitude fluctuate simultaneously and significantly. The second is the high unsteady separation in the corner region.

The aim of this work is to present detailed unsteady pressure measurements of three-dimensional flow field in a NACA 65 linear compressor cascade. Chord-based Reynolds number of 382000 and incidence angle of 4 degrees were chosen as target configuration of the rig, which clearly presents the corner separation phenomenon at the juncture of the blade suction side and the end-wall. Concerning the experiments, a characterization of the mean and fluctuating component of wall static pressure on the surface of a specially developed blade is achieved at first. This fluctuating component is investigated utilizing nineteen high sensitivity condenser microphones plugged into blade cavities which have been carefully calibrated. Transfer functions obtained by calibration are exploited to reconstruct the time-dependent pressure signal and finally statistics, conditional ensemble averages, coherence and spectra analyses of fluctuations are presented in order to investigate the unsteady characteristics of the corner separation. High values of root mean square are individuated near the leading edge and in the separation region on the suction surface of the blade. Skewness and kurtosis show an intermittent behavior of the separation onset, which moves upstream and downstream on the suction surface. This intermittency of the separation line is probably linked with the existence of a bimodal behavior of the size of the corner separation. The analyses of coherence and conditional ensemble average between the signals at the leading edge and at the onset of the separation suggest a critical influence of angle and velocity of the incoming end-wall boundary layer on the positive pressure signatures of the shear layer, which characterize the inception of the separation.

Experimental results from a study of the three-dimensional flow in a linear compressor cascade with stationary endwall at design conditions are presented for tip clearance levels of 1.0, 2.0, and 3.3 percent of chord, compared with the no-clearance case. In addition to five-hole probe measurements, extensive surface flow visualizations are conducted. It is observed that for the smaller clearance cases a weak horseshoe vortex forms in the front of the blade leading edge. At all the tip gap cases, a multiple tip vortex structure with three discrete vortices around the midchord is found. The tip leakage vortex core is well defined after the midchord but does not cover a significant area in traverse planes. The presence of the tip leakage vortex results in the passage vortex moving close to the endwall and the suction side.

A Navier-Stokes solver is applied to investigate the 3D viscous flow in a low speed linear compressor cascade with tip clearance at design and off-design conditions with two different meshes. The algebraic turbulence model of Baldwin-Lomax is used for closure. Relative motion between the blades and wall is simulated for one flow coefficient. Comparisons with experimental data, including flow structure, static and total pressures, velocity profiles, secondary flows and vorticity, are presented for the stationary wall case. It is shown that the code predicts well the flow structure observed in experiments and shows the details of the tip leakage flow and the leading edge horseshoe vortex.

Most of the inverse design methods of turbomachinery experience the shortcoming where the target aerodynamic parameters need to be manually specified depending on the designers’ experience and insight, making the design result aleatory and even deviated from the real optimal solution. To tackle this problem, an experience-independent inverse design optimization method is proposed and applied to the redesign of a compressor cascade airfoil in this study. The experience-independent inverse design optimization method can automatically obtain the target pressure distribution along the cascade airfoil through the genetic algorithm, rather than through the manual specification approach. The shape of cascade airfoil is then solved by the adjoint method. The effectiveness of the experience-independent inverse design optimization method is demonstrated by two inverse design cases of the compressor cascade airfoil, i.e. the inverse design of only the suction surface and the inverse design of both the suction and pressure surfaces. The results show that the proposed inverse design method is capable of significantly improving the aerodynamic performance of the compressor cascade. At the examined flow condition, a thin airfoil profile is beneficial to flow accelerations near the leading edge and flow separation avoidance near the trailing edge. The proposed inverse design method is quite generic and can be extended to the three-dimensional inverse design of advanced compressor blades.

An experimental study of three-dimensional flow field in an annular compressor cascade with an upstream rotor has been carried out at four different incidences to the stator blade. Blade boundary layers and the three-dimensional flow field at the exit are surveyed using a hot wire sensor and a five hole probe, respectively. The data on the blade boundary layer, passage flow and separated corner flow is presented. The upstream rotor wake has a major influence on the transition, laminar separation bubble, extent of wall/corner flow separation, aerodynamic losses, secondary flow and three-dimensional flow inside the passage. Detailed interpretation of the effects of upstream wakes on the entire passage flow is presented and compared with the data in the absence of a rotor.

This paper presents an experimental study of the three-dimensional turbulent flow field in the tip region of an axial flow compressor rotor passage at a near stall condition. The investigation was conducted in a low-speed large-scale compressor using a 3-component Laser Doppler Velocimetry and a high frequency pressure transducer. The measurement results indicate that a tip leakage vortex is produced very close to the leading edge, and becomes the strongest at about 10% axial chord from the leading edge. Breakdown of the vortex periodically occurs at about 1/3 chord, causing very strong turbulence in the radial direction. Flow separation happens on the tip suction surface at about half chord, prompting the corner vortex migrating toward the pressure side. Tangential migration of the low-energy fluids results in substantial flow blockage and turbulence in the rear of a rotor passage. Unsteady interactions among the tip leakage vortex, the separated vortex and the corner flow should contribute to the inception of the rotating stall in a compressor.

This paper considers the inherent unsteady behavior of the three dimensional separation in the corner region of a subsonic linear compressor cascade equipped of thirteen NACA 65-009 profile blades. Detailed experimental measurements were carried out at different sections in spanwise direction achieving, simultaneously, unsteady wall pressure signals on the surface of the blade and velocity fields by time-resolved PIV measurements. Two configurations of the cascade were investigated with an incidence of 4° and 7°, both at Re = 3.8 * 105 and Ma = 0.12 at the inlet of the facility. The intermittent switch between the two statistical preferred sizes of separation, large and almost suppressed, is called bimodal behaviour. The existence of such oscillation, reported at first in previous experimental and numerical works on the same test rig, is confirmed for both incidences. Additionally, the present PIV measurements provide, for the first time, time-resolved flow visualizations of the size switch of the separation with an extended field of view covering the entire blade section. The interaction of random large structures of the incoming boundary layer with the blade is found to be a predominant element that destabilizes the separation boundary. The recirculation region enlarges when these high vorticity perturbations blend with larger eddies situated in the aft part of the blade. Such massive separation persists until the blockage in the passage causes the breakdown of the largest structures in the aft part of the blade. The flow starts again to accelerate and the separation is almost suppressed. Finally, POD analysis is carried out to decompose flow modes and to contribute to the clarification of underlying cause-effect-relations, which predominate the dynamics of the present flow scenario.

A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics simulation is performed for a ruby-throated hummingbird ( Archilochus colubris ) in hovering flight. Realistic wing kinematics are adopted in the numerical model by reconstructing the wing motion from high-speed imaging data of the bird. Lift history and the three-dimensional flow pattern around the wing in full stroke cycles are captured in the simulation. Significant asymmetry is observed for lift production within a stroke cycle. In particular, the downstroke generates about 2.5 times as much vertical force as the upstroke, a result that confirms the estimate based on the measurement of the circulation in a previous experimental study. Associated with lift production is the similar power imbalance between the two half strokes. Further analysis shows that in addition to the angle of attack, wing velocity and surface area, drag-based force and wing–wake interaction also contribute significantly to the lift asymmetry. Though the wing–wake interaction could be beneficial for lift enhancement, the isolated stroke simulation shows that this benefit is buried by other opposing effects, e.g. presence of downwash. The leading-edge vortex is stable during the downstroke but may shed during the upstroke. Finally, the full-body simulation result shows that the effects of wing–wing interaction and wing–body interaction are small.
