A numerical analysis methodology has been created to predict the heat transfer within the air cooling passages of gas turbine blades. In this paper, the turbulent flow heat convection with developed velocity and temperature fields is studied for cavities with turbulators. The influence of Coriolis forces and rotational buoyancy effects were also included. The k-equation turbulence model was employed over most of the cross section while a modified Van Driest’s version of the mixing length hypothesis is used in the near-wall sublayer. This methodology was successfully benchmarked against experimental results for air cooling passages of turbine blades. Analytical results are presented in terms of the Reynolds, Rossby and rotational Rayleigh numbers for realistic operating conditions.

To design cooled gas turbine blades, heat transfer coefficients around its surface are required. The calculated heat transfer data under operating conditions in the turbine are often inaccurate and require experimental verification. A method is presented here to determine the heat transfer coefficients around the blade surface and in the coolant channels. This requires measurements of the main stream and coolant temperatures together with the outer surface temperature distribution at varying mass flows. In order to conduct these tests in a gas turbine, test blades have to be specially prepared allowing the variation and measurement of coolant mass flow.

This work presents the performance study of a 1 MW gas turbine including the effects of blade cooling and compressor variable geometry. The axial flow compressor, with Variable Inlet Guide Vane (VIGV), was designed for this application and its performance maps synthesized using own high technological contents computer programs. The performance study was performed using a specially developed computer program, which is able to numerically simulate gas turbine engines performance with high confidence, in all possible operating conditions. The effects of turbine blades cooling were calculated for different turbine inlet temperatures (TIT) and the influence of the amount of compressor-bled cooling air was studied, aiming at efficiency maximization, for a specified blade life and cooling technology. Details of compressor maps generation, cycle analysis and blade cooling are discussed.

Internal cooling channels are commonly used to reduce the thermal loads on the gas turbine blades to improve overall efficiency. In this study a numerical investigation has been carried out to provide a validated and consistent method to deal with the prediction of the fluid flow and the heat transfer of such channels with square cross sections. The rotation modified Navier-Stokes and energy equations together with a low-Re number version of the k-ε turbulence model are solved with appropriate boundary conditions. The solution procedure is based on a numerical method using a collocated grid, and the pressure-velocity coupling is handled by the SIMPLEC algorithm. The computations are performed with the assumption of fully developed periodic conditions. The calculations are carried out for smooth ducts with and without rotation and effects of rotation on the heat transfer are described. Similar numerical calculations have carried out for channels with rib-roughened walls. The obtained results are compared with available experimental data and empirical correlations for the heat transfer rate and the friction factor. Some details of the flow and heat transfer fields are also presented.

The accurate prediction of heat transfer coefficients on cooled gas turbine blades requires consideration of various influence parameters. The present study continues previous work with special efforts to determine the separate effects of each of several parameters important in turbine flow. Heat transfer and boundary layer measurements were performed along a cooled flat plate with various freestream turbulence levels (Tu = 1.6−11 percent), pressure gradients (k = 0−6 × 10−6), and cooling intensities (Tw/T∞ = 1.0−0.53). Whereas the majority of previously available results were obtained from adiabatic or only slightly heated surfaces, the present study is directed mainly toward application on highly cooled surfaces as found in gas turbine engines.

The intent of this work is to show, analytically, that superheated steam can provide better film cooling than conventional air for gas turbine blades and vanes. Goldstein’s two-dimensional and Eckert’s three-dimensional models have been reexamined and modified in order to include the effects of thermal-fluid properties of foreign gas injection on the film cooling effectiveness. Based on the modified models, the computed results for steam film cooling effectiveness, showing an increase of 80 to 100 percent when compared with air cooling at the same operating conditions, are presented.

Abstract Internal cooling of gas turbine blades is performed with the combination of impingement cooling and serpentine channels. Besides gas turbine blades, the other turbine components such as turbine guide vanes, rotor disks, and combustor wall can be cooled using jet impingement cooling. This study is focused on jet impingement cooling, in order to optimize the coolant flow, and provide the maximum amount of cooling using the minimum amount of coolant. The study compares between different nozzle configurations (in-line and staggered), two different Reynold's numbers (1500 and 2000), and different stand-off distances (Z/D) both experimentally and numerically. The Z/D considered are 3, 5, and 8. In jet impingement cooling, the jet of fluid strikes perpendicular to the target surface to be cooled with high velocity to dissipate the heat. The target surface is heated up by a direct current (DC) power source. The experimental results are obtained by means of thermal image processing of the captured infra-red (IR) thermal images of the target surface. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis were employed to predict the complex heat transfer and flow phenomena, primarily the line-averaged and area-averaged Nusselt number and the cross-flow effects. In the current investigation, the flow is confined along with the nozzle plate and two parallel surfaces forming a bi-directional channel (bi-directional exit). The results show a comparison between heat transfer enhancement with in-line and staggered nozzle arrays. It is observed that the peaks of the line-averaged Nusselt number (Nu) become less as the stand-off distance (Z/D) increases. It is also observed that the fluctuations in the stagnation heat transfer are caused by the impingement of the primary vortices originating from the jet nozzle exit.
