Abstract Historic developments, and the current state of the art are surveyed in thought, theory, methods and methodology, and education for and about engineering design. This survey covers two particular and disparate regions, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, the latter including the activities of an international group centered in Zürich known as WDK — Workshop Design-Konstruktion.

This chapter explains meta-ethnography as created by Noblit and Hare and how the method has been used since. This is the methodology each of the chapters in this volume used to synthesize qualitative research studies of cultural identity. Meta-ethnography is an approach to qualitative research synthesis that is interpretive rather than aggregative. In this volume, we introduce critical meta-ethnography as an approach to informing social theory. It involves identifying the key metaphors or concepts in the selected studies and comparing them. Studies are translated into one another, developing a synthesis that takes the form of an analogy. In recent years, meta-ethnography has been used extensively in health studies, particularly in the United Kingdom. This chapter both clarifies the status of meta-ethnography as a methodology of synthesis based in the translation of studies into each other and addresses the current state of the art of meta-ethnography. The chapter ends by introducing the meta-ethnographies that follow.

This article calls for the creation of a national digitization strategy in the United Kingdom. It summarizes the author's research into the current state of digitization in the UK with reference to present strategy, direction and funding. The application of a defined strategy is contentious and the author considers arguments on both sides of the debate. The author argues however that digitization has ‘come of age’ and that it is essential that integration and harmonization of methods are considered by UK stakeholders in order to maximize future potential. The author proceeds to suggest what future steps are necessary to achieve this goal.

Abstract The development of multi-functional designs is one of the prime reasons to adopt bio-inspired design in engineering design. However, the development of multi-functional bio-inspired designs is mostly solution-driven, in the sense that an available multi-functional solution drives the search for a problem that can be solved by implementing the available solution. The solution-driven nature of the approach restricts the engineering designers to the use of the function combinations found in nature. On the other hand, a problem-driven approach to multi-functional designs allows the designers to form some combination of functions best suited for the problem at hand. However, few works exist in the literature that focus on the development of multi-functional bio-inspired solutions from a problem-driven perspective. In this work, we analyze the existing works that aid the designers in combining multiple biological strategies to develop multi-functional bio-inspired designs. The analysis is carried out by comparing and contrasting the existing frameworks that support multi-functional bio-inspired design generation. The criteria of comparison are derived from the steps involved in the unified problem-driven biomimetic approach. In addition, we qualitatively compare the multi-functional bio-inspired designs developed using existing frameworks to the multi-functional designs existing in biology. Our aim is to explore the capabilities and limitations of current methods to support the generation multi-functional bio-inspired designs.

The purpose of this paper is to present the study developed jointly by TRANSPETRO/Natural Gas Department and Det Norske Veritas in association with Jardine Asset & Risk Management Solutions (Jardine) from the United Kingdom. The study was carried out with the objective of evaluating the security of supply of the overall TRANSPETRO Southeast gas supply network in 2005, 2006 and 2007, that provide gas in the Southeast region of Brazil to thermo plants, to vehicles and to industrial and residential consumers. The occurrence of contract shortfalls imply in heavy fines for the suppliers. To provide best in class analysis, state of the art software was used in order to count on powerful tools to model the gas supply system and to quantify the availability and the efficiency of the overall network and of the individual components.

The article analyzes the features of the politicization of the Scotland and Northern Ireland at the present stage. The basic identifiers for the communities in these regions are revealed. The important role of devolution policy in the political relations of the Center with regions in the United Kingdom is justified. Emphasis is placed on the exceptional importance of Brexit in the context of strengthening the separation of the Scotland and Northern Ireland. It is marked common and distinctive features of both regions in the vision of the political future. The current state of the factors contributing to separatism in both regions is compared. Estimates of the likelihood of increased separation movements in the Scotland and Northern Ireland in the future are given.

This paper offers an analysis of the current state of teacher education research in the United Kingdom (UK). It commences with a brief historical overview of developments over the last century. Some recent «capacity building» initiatives designed to enhance and develop teacher education research are described. There is then a focus on a particular web-based resource that draws together a significant number of publications in UK teacher education research from 2000-2008. This database is then analysed in order to identify in which journals and by which authors this work is produced. The range of methodological approaches and substantive areas of focus that appear to predominate in teacher education research in the UK are reviewed, according to categories within the database. This demonstrates that there are some very real challenges to be faced by teacher education researchers in the years ahead, similar but not identical to those faced elsewhere.
