Abstract Real-time collaboration systems, in which participants share product data and applications in real time, have been a subject of interest for many years. Nowadays, a rapid development of Internet-based technologies with steadily increasing easiness in accessing any kind of information through the World Wide Web (WWW) would offer the possibility of developing a real-time collaborative system over the Internet. Two strategies are required to create such a system. One strategy is finding effective methods for communicating and sharing distributed product information, especially those related to design and manufacturing. Another strategy is developing Web-based approaches that support real-time sharing of platform-independent applications. In this paper, a concept for a multi-user collaborative assembly environment on the Internet is presented. The Client/Server structure of the environment, and the four main functional modules including: 1) integration and sharing of distributed product data through a STEP server; 2) session management including team management, user management and access control; 3) sharing of multimedia data (e.g. text, audio and video); 4) 3D collaborative assembly, are described. Finally, a scenario has been designed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the environment to support distributed collaborative assembly design.

This chapter will introduce three new IETF transport layer protocols in support of multimedia data transmission and discuss their usage. First, the stream control transmission protocol (SCTP) will be described; this protocol was originally designed for telephony signaling across the Internet, but it is in fact broadly applicable. Second, UDP-Lite (an even simpler UDP) will be explained; this is an example of a small protocol change that opened a large can of worms. The chapter concludes with an overview of the datagram congestion control protocol (DCCP), a newly devised IETF protocol for the transmission of unreliable (typically real-time multimedia) data streams.

The timely availability and quality of building product information is critical prerequisite for a successful building delivery process. However, little is known about the processes by which stakeholders acquire and use such data. This contribution documents the results of recent relevant surveys, addressing the building product data processing by planers, clients, and the industry. Web questionnaires and interviews with opinion leaders were conducted. Altogether, over 100 participants provided pertinent insights regarding strengths and weaknesses of the current data representation practices. A comparison of the obtained data with that of an earlier study allows for the documentation of the evolutionary trends in web-based data provision. Most importantly, the results facilitate the formulation of strategies for a more effective presentation and distribution of building product data.

Along with the rapid development of internet technology today, the company's financial reporting activities can be done via the Internet in real time in an easy way and a wider scope. Internet-based financial reporting is commonly known as the Internet Financial Reporting (IFR). This research is a descriptive study that aims to determine the implementation of IFR on Islamic Banks in Indonesia. The variables in this study consisted of content, presentation and timeliness variable with a total of 112 items tested indicators. The results of this study indicate that the eleventh BUS sampled research has been able to apply IFR. IFR score obtained by each BUS has a nearly equal value ranging from 49% to 63% with the total maximum score of 100% and average score of 55%

In this paper, an information model, known as Master Assembly Model (MAM), is introduced to support real-time multi-user collaborative assembly modeling on the Internet. By using UML class diagrams, the MAM is described in detail according to four key aspects: (1) Collaborative Assembly Representation, (2) Multi-View, (3) Coordination Control and (4) Collaborative Session. Finally, a real-time multi-user collaborative assembly modeling system based on this model is suggested. This system makes it possible for different organizations at geographically different locations to work together concurrently and synchronously on the design and modeling of an assembly.

Video growth over the Internet changed the way users search, browse and view video content. Watching movies over the Internet is increasing and becoming a pastime. The possibility of streaming Internet content to TV, advances in video compression techniques and video streaming have turned this recent modality of watching movies easy and doable. Web portals as a worldwide mean of multimedia data access need to have their contents properly classified in order to meet users’ needs and expectations. The authors propose a set of semantic descriptors based on both user physiological signals, captured while watching videos, and on video low-level features extraction. These XML based descriptors contribute to the creation of automatic affective meta-information that will not only enhance a web-based video recommendation system based in emotional information, but also enhance search and retrieval of videos affective content from both users’ personal classifications and content classifications in the context of a web portal.

The heterogeneous network environment that Internet provides to real time applications as well as the lack of sufficient QoS (Quality of Service) guarantees, many times forces applications to embody adaptation schemes in order to work efficiently. In addition, any application that transmits data over the Internet should have a friendly behaviour towards the other flows that coexist in today’s Internet and especially towards the TCP flows that comprise the majority of flows. We define as TCP friendly flow, a flow that consumes no more bandwidth than a TCP connection, which is traversing the same path with that flow (Pandhye 1999).

Spurred by development in computer science and network technology, the use of the Internet has been expanding exponentially. It is now extensively used as a connectivity and reference tool for numerous commercial, personal, and educational purposes. In education, the Internet opens a variety of new avenues and methodologies for enhancing the experience of learning as well as expanding educational opportunities for a larger pool of students. Specifically, distance education and non-traditional classrooms have the capability to reach more students using specialized instruction and self-paced learning. In the area of distance education, many Web-based real time experimentation systems have been reported in the literature (Ando, Graziani, & Pitrone, 2003; Daponte, Grimaldi, & Marinov, 2002; Ko, Chen, Chen et al., 2000; Ko et al., 2001; Kumar, Sridharan, & Srinivasan, 2002; Yeung & Huang, 2003). These Internet-based remote laboratories allow users or students to carry out physical experimental work at their own pace anytime anywhere. They generally require very little physical space and minimal manpower to maintain, and are ideal for the sharing of expensive equipment. However, all these experimental systems can only provide 2D operation panels. Due to this limitation, the actual shapes of 3D instruments and equipment, some of which may have controls or display components on different sides, may not be possible to be reflected on the remote user’s client display window.

In this article, we concentrate on the architecture of an adaptive real time application that has the capability to transmit multimedia data over heterogeneous networks and adapt the transmission of the multimedia data to the network changes. Moreover in this article, we concentrate to the unicast transmission of multimedia data.
