Adaptable design aims to extend the utilities of designs and products. Adaptability is classified into product and design adaptabilities. Product adaptability indicates that functionality and life can be extended for both economical and environmental benefits. Design adaptability improves design reuse by using existing designs to develop new designs more efficiently. To evaluate adaptable design, it is necessary to develop a method for quantitative measurement of the adaptability of products. A new method has been developed that first analyzes the independencies of functions and functional modules and then evaluates the adaptability of interfaces with two indices, as well as the performances of adaptive requirements. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by an illustrative example of personal computer motherboards. The results show that the method can evaluate and reveal product adaptability for improving design and providing innovative design.

AbstractA design problem with deficient information is generally described as wicked or ill-defined. The information insufficiency leaves designers with loose settings, free environments, and a lack of strict boundaries, which provides them with more opportunities to facilitate innovation. Therefore, to capture the opportunity behind the uncertainty of a design problem, this study models an innovative design as a composite solving process, where the problem is clarified and resolved from fuzziness to satisfying solutions by interplay among design problems, knowledge, and solutions. Additionally, a triple-helix structured model for the innovative product design process is proposed based on the co-evolution of the problem, solution, and knowledge spaces, to provide designers with a distinct design strategy and method for innovative design. The three spaces interact and co-evolve through iterative mappings, including problem structuring, knowledge expansion, and solution generation. The mappings carry the information processing and decision-making activities of the design, and create the path to satisfying solutions. Finally, a case study of a reactor coolant flow distribution device is presented to demonstrate the practicability of this model and the method for innovative product design.

Design reuse is the application of past designs knowledge and successful experience to current design process and it is a significant method for rapid design. A knowledge-reuse-based rapid product design model is proposed and a three-factor product design iterative process model is studied. Finally, it is applied successfully in the rapid product design of construction machinery combining with the requirement of the construct machinery product design.

The aim of adaptable design is to create products that can easily adapt to different needs. The objective if this study is to analyze the effectivenes in communication to promote an adaptable baby stroller, in order to know the user perception of the advantages derived from its adaptability, as well as the environmental ones, and if there is correlation between them. It is also intended to determine whether age or previous experience with this type of product can influence this perception. To this effect, a study with 54 participants has been conducted. Results show that users percieve the advantages and find the adaptable design interesting. Valuation of the advantages of the product is affected by previous user experience with the need for adaptability. Valuation of the environmental benefits is independent from the degree of experiense, as well as from the age of the participants (between 30 and 45 years old).

Straight, conventional keyboards are still the most popular design among those shipped with new personal computer sales and standalone keyboard retail sales. Many keyboard users are reluctant to switch to a more ergonomic keyboard – designs that reduce awkward wrist postures. Ergonomic research led to a design of a new keyboard providing more ergonomic benefit to the masses of conventional, straight keyboard users while being equally or even more preferred. The result was a keyboard: Microsoft Comfort Curve ® Keyboard, designed with a subtle split angle of 12° (instead of 24° of traditional ergonomic keyboards), extending the keys' sizes within this split. The design goals were to reduce ulnar deviation and to maintain approachability and typing performance.

In the face of increasing competition and diversified demand, product design must be customer oriented for modern enterprises to satisfy the variationally personalized requirements. Thereof; the exact orientation and comprehensive analysis of target customers have been the key to conduct customer oriented product design. This paper presented a new method for the orientation and analysis of target customers by adaptive clustering analysis. By this method, the distribution of customer clusters and the related characteristics of each custer as well as its included customers can be extracted dynamically and adaptively. Applied by this method, the adaptive recommendation system was illustrated for the design of LCD-TV.This paper applied the Autonomous Intelligent System(AIS) to deal with the intelligent activities intelligently and automatically, and thereof provided a new method for the Supply Chain Management(SCM) on MC manufacture. First, a new supply chain model based on E-HUB was presented according to the requirements of MC manufacture, and then the structure and operation of AIS were designed to support that SCM. Finally, the development technology of AIS was discussed.

Aiming at there are multifarious small shaft and sleeve subassemblies, in which shape and quantity of parts are different, the adaptable design concept was applied to the design of auto assembly machine product platform for small shaft and sleeve subassemblies. According to the general structure design and the module partition for the product platform, a parameterized design method that the number of stations is the main parameter was proposed. And the parameterized product platform, which can be suitable for the automatic assembling of multifarious small shaft and sleeve subassemblies and can be upgraded, was founded. Thus, the universality of the product platform is improved, and the product design cycle is shortened.

In modern society, people have not only the functional requirements of the product, but also the pursuit in its spiritual sustenance. Based on the concept of the folding structure, this thesis extracts the essence of the folding structure design from typical product design, then analyzes the style and structural features of range hood in depth, puts forward the design concepts and innovative solutions of range hood, and, designs a pull-out range hood which saves space and achieves a combination of Chinese traditional elements with modern design perfectly.
