Cyber-physical systems (CPS) are smart systems that include engineered interacting networks of physical and computational components. The tight integration of a wide range of heterogeneous components enables new functionality and quality of life improvements in critical infrastructures such as smart cities, intelligent buildings, and smart energy systems. One approach to study CPS uses both simulations and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) to test the physical dynamics of hardware in a controlled environment. However, because CPS experiment design may involve domain experts from multiple disciplines who use different simulation tool suites, it can be a challenge to integrate the heterogeneous simulation languages and hardware interfaces into a single experiment. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is working on the development of a universal CPS environment for federation (UCEF) that can be used to design and run experiments that incorporate heterogeneous physical and computational resources over a wide geographic area. This development environment uses the High Level Architecture (HLA), which the Department of Defense has advocated for co-simulation in the field of distributed simulations, to enable communication between hardware and different simulation languages such as Simulink® and LabVIEW®. This paper provides an overview of UCEF and motivates how the environment could be used to develop energy experiments using an illustrative example of an emulated heat pump system.

AbstractThe Internet of Things (IoT) is bringing Internet connectivity to a wide range of devices which results in an increasing number of products for smart home, industry 4.0 and/or smart cities. Even though IoT has the ambition to reach an increasing amount of devices and be scalable across different domains, lack of interoperability inhibits this scope to be attained. Recent standardization efforts by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) are addressing the interoperability problem by the means of Thing Description (TD) that allows humans and machines to understand the capabilities and communication interfaces of IoT devices. In this paper, we show a more systematic and streamlined development of IoT devices and systems that relies on the TD standard. We introduce three different complementary methods that can be applied independently in the different stages of the development, or as a framework to streamline the development of IoT devices and systems. As a result of using the TD standard, interoperability between IoT devices of various stakeholders is ensured from early stages and the time to market is reduced.

This research presents an energy performance analysis of the heat pump system with internal heat exchanger (IHX). The mathematical model of the heat pump outlined in this paper has been created by the author, it is steady-state with lumped parameters. The experimental validation of the model has been carried out using R1234yf and R134a as refrigerant. The aim of this work is to compare the energy performance in a wide range of operating conditions of a monitored heat pump system using both refrigerants. Finally, the heating capacity for R1234yf was lower from 0.63 % to 7.54 % compared with R134a, while the compressor power was similar from 0.12 % to 3.51 %. The COP values of R1234yf were lower than those obtained of R134a, ranging from 1.39 % to 4.22 %.

In this research the technical designing of energy efficient heating system with vertical-borehole heat pumps for institutional buildings was performed. The local government would like to change the old gas boiler-based heat producing system to up-to-date, environmental friendly equipment with the financial support of the European Union. The payback time was calculated and environmental calculations were achieved with carbon dioxide saving by various conditions that were also achieved during the research project. The results show that the heat pump system also provides a significant reduction of environmental load, in addition to significant energy savings. The amount of calculated savings justifies the environmental friendliness of heat pump systems.

A general procedure is presented for estimating the seasonal performance of solar-assisted heat pumps with refrigerant-filled collectors. The procedure accounts for variations in collector design and orientation and also for heat pump capacity and efficiency. The results from this design procedure for space heating applications are compared against those for both conventional heat pumps and liquid solar systems. The effects of collector area and design, heat pump size and degradation due to cycling, and energy storage are discussed. For space heating, uncovered collector heat pump systems have better performance than both conventional air-source heat pumps and covered collector heat pump systems over a wide range of collector areas. The cooling performance of a collector heat pump system is inferior to that of conventional heat pumps.
