Finite Element Analysis of a Moving Packed-Bed Particle-to-sCO2 Heat Exchanger Testing and Performance

Abstract A focus in the development of the next generation of concentrating solar power (CSP) plants is the integration of high temperature particle receivers with improved efficiency supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) power cycles. The feasibility of this type of system depends on the design of a particle-to-sCO2 heat exchanger. This work presents a finite element analysis (FEA) model to analyze the thermal performance of a particle-to-sCO2 heat exchanger for potential use in a CSP plant. The heat exchanger design utilizes a moving packed bed of particles in crossflow with sCO2 which flows in a serpentine pattern through banks of microchannel plates. The model contains a thermal analysis to determine the heat exchanger’s performance in transferring thermal energy from the particle bed to the sCO2. Test data from a prototype heat exchanger was used to verify the performance predictions of the model. The verification of the model required a multitude of sensitivity tests to identify where fidelity needed to be added to reach agreement between the experimental and simulated results. For each sensitivity test in the model, the effect on the performance is discussed. The model was shown to be in good agreement on the overall heat transfer coefficient of the heat exchanger with the experimental results for a low temperature set of conditions with a combination of added sensitives. A set of key factors with a major impact on the performance of the heat exchanger are discussed.

Abstract Because the structural integrity of brake systems and tires can be related to the temperature, this work proposes a transient heat transfer finite element analysis (FEA) model to study the overheating in drum brake systems used in trucks and urban buses. To understand the mechanics of overheating, some constructive variants have been modeled regarding the assemblage: brake, rims, and tires. The model simultaneously studies the thermal energy generated by brakes and tires and how the heat is transferred and dissipated by conduction, convection, and radiation. The simulated FEA data and the experimental temperature profiles measured with thermocouples have been compared giving good correlation.

Abstract In this paper, we study the energy absorption of metamaterials composed of unit cells whose special geometry makes the cross-sectional area and the volume of the bodies generated from them constant (for the same enclosing box dimensions). After a parametric description of such special geometries, we analyzed by finite element analysis the deformation of the metamaterials we have designed during compression. We 3D printed the designed metamaterials from plastic to subject them to real compression. The results of the finite element analysis were compared with the real compaction results. Then, for each test specimen, we plotted its compaction curve. By fitting a polynomial to the compaction curves and integrating it (area under the curve), the energy absorption of the samples can be obtained. As a result of these investigations, we drew a conclusion about the relationship between energy absorption and cell number.

A practical explicit 3D finite element analysis model has been developed and implemented to analyze turning hardened AISI 52100 steels using a PCBN cutting tool. The finite element analysis incorporated the thermo-elastic-plastic properties of the work material in machining. An improved friction model has been proposed to characterize tool-chip interaction with the friction coefficient and shear flow stresses determined by force calibration and material tests, respectively. A geometric model has been established to simulate a 3D turning. FEA Model predictions have reasonable accuracy for chip geometry, forces, residual stresses, and cutting temperatures. FEA model sensitivity analysis indicates that the prediction is consistent using a suitable magnitude of material failure strain for chip separation, the simulation gives reasonable results using the experimentally determined material properties, the proposed friction model is valid and the sticking region on the tool-chip interface is a dominant factor of model predictions.

Abstract A finite element analysis (FEA) model of the interaction of a nut and bolt was used to investigate the effects of sliding, friction, and yielding in a bolted connection. The finite element model was developed as a two-dimensional, axisymmetric system, which allowed the study of axial and radial loading and displacements. This model did not permit evaluation of hoop or torsional effects such as tightening or the helical thread form. Results presented in this paper include the distribution of load between consecutive threads, the relative sliding along thread faces, and the stress distribution and regions of yielding in the model. Finally, a comparison to previous, linear analysis work and to published experimental data is made to conclude the paper.

The proposed finite element analysis (FEA) model was constructed using FEA simulation software, ANSYS program, for determining effects of corrosion fatigue (CF) from TIG welding process on AISI 304 stainless steel workpiece. The FEA model of TIG welding process was developed from Goldak's double ellipsoid moving heat source. In this paper, the residual stress results obtained from the FEA model were consistent with results from the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method. The residual stress was further used as an input in the next step of corrosion fatigue analysis. The predictive CF life result obtained from the FEA CF model were consistent with the value obtained from stress-life curve (S-N curve) from the reference literaturature. Therefore, the proposed FEA of CF model was then used for predicting the corrosion fatigue life on TIG welding workpiece, the results from the model showed the corrosion fatigue life of 1,794 cycles with testing condition of the frequency ( f ) = 0.1 Hz and the equivalent load of 67.5 kN (equal to 150 MPa) with R = 0.25.

KOCH Heat Transfer Company contracted Stress Engineering Services, Inc. to perform a design/parameter study of a return bonnet used in hairpin heat exchangers that employs an elliptical flange design. The return bonnet is an important component of the heat exchanger as it can be removed to permit inspection of the heat exchanger tubes. The return bonnet is bolted to the hairpin leg flange. To maintain sealing integrity a gasket is placed between the return bonnet flange and the hairpin leg flange. The sealing efficiency of two return bonnet sizes (24-inch and 30-inch) was investigated in this study using finite element analysis. The sealing efficiency is an indication of how the contact pressure changes circumferentially around the gasket and is calculated by dividing the local contact pressure by the maximum contact pressure calculated in the gasket for each respective design. The study assessed the effects of geometric changes to the mating flanges. Using an iterative design process using finite element analysis, the elliptical flanges were optimized to maximize sealing efficiency. Upon completion of the study, the manufacturer successfully employed the modifications as evidenced with multiple successful hydrotests.
