Abstract The objective to alleviate the detrimental effects of supersonic flutter of aerospace structures necessitates the development of advanced composite materials. Porous functionally graded materials are viable alternatives to replace the metal/alloys used for critical components. The present work investigates the supersonic flutter characteristics of hinged-hinged panel for the porosity grading across the thickness and/or along the streamwise direction. Also, the possibility to alleviate the detrimental effects is investigated through the study of influence of streamwise and spanwise curvatures. A geometrically nonlinear finite element model of panel is derived using first-order shear deformation theory while the aerodynamic pressure on panel is accounted using the first-order piston theory. The results revealed that symmetric distribution of porosity with minimum porosity at the midspan and maximum porosity at core displays the better performance. Porosity and streamwise curvature reduces critical aerodynamic pressure and enhances flutter amplitude. For higher streamwise curvatures/porosity, panel undergoes snap-through buckling resulting in complex vibrations. Whereas the spanwise curvature substantially enhance the critical dynamic pressure thereby eliminates complex oscillations and snap-through. But moderately increases the flutter amplitude and frequency beyond its critical aerodynamic pressure. At higher spanwise curvatures, the effectiveness of bidirectional grading decreases making its through-thickness grading as dominant.

Nonlinear dynamic behaviors of ceramic-metal graded truncated conical shell subjected to complex loads are investigated. The shell is modeled by first-order shear deformation theory. The nonlinear partial differential governing equation in terms of transverse displacements of the FGM truncated conical shell is derived from the Hamilton's principle. Galerkin's method is then utilized to discretize the partial governing equations to a two-degree-of-freedom nonlinear ordinary differential equation. The temperature-dependent materials properties of the constituents are graded in the radial direction in accordance with a power-law distribution. The aerodynamic pressure can be calculated by using the first-order piston theory. The temperature field is assumed to be a steady-state constant-temperature distribution. Bifurcation diagrams, the maximum Lyapunov exponents, wave forms and phase portraits are obtained by numerical simulation to demonstrate the complex nonlinear dynamics response of the FGM truncated conical shell. The influences of the semi-vertex angle, the material gradient index, in-plane and aerodynamic load on the nonlinear dynamics are studied.

In this article, a comprehensive study is conducted on the free vibration analysis of rotating truncated conical shells reinforced with functionally graded agglomerated carbon nanotubes The shell is modeled based on the first-order shear deformation theory, and effective mechanical properties are calculated based on the Eshelby–Mori–Tanaka scheme along with the rule of mixture. By considering centrifugal and Coriolis accelerations and initial hoop tension, the set of governing equations is derived using Hamilton’s principle and is solved numerically using the differential quadrature method Convergence and accuracy of the presented model are confirmed and the effects of different parameters on the forward and backward frequencies of the rotating carbon nanotube-reinforced truncated conical shells are investigated.

In this paper, the bending behavior of functionally graded single-layered, symmetric and non-symmetric sandwich beams is investigated according to a new higher order shear deformation theory. Based on this theory, a novel parabolic shear deformation function is developed and applied to investigate the bending response of sandwich beams with homogeneous hardcore and softcore. The present theory provides an accurate parabolic distribution of transverse shear stress across the thickness and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the functionally graded sandwich beam without using any shear correction factors. The governing equations derived herein are solved by employing the finite element method using a two-node beam element, developed for this purpose. The material properties of functionally graded sandwich beams are graded through the thickness according to the power-law distribution. The predictive capability of the proposed finite element model is demonstrated through illustrative examples. Four types of beam support, i.e. simply-simply, clamped-free, clamped–clamped, and clamped-simply, are used to study how the beam deflection and both axial and transverse shear stresses are affected by the variation of volume fraction index and beam length-to-height ratio. Results of the numerical analysis have been reported and compared with those available in the open literature to evaluate the accuracy and robustness of the proposed finite element model. The comparisons with other higher order shear deformation theories verify that the proposed beam element is accurate, presents fast rate of convergence to the reference results and it is also valid for both thin and thick functionally graded sandwich beams. Further, some new results are reported in the current study, which will serve as a benchmark for future research.

In this paper, the first order shear deformation theory is used to derive an analytical formulation for shrink-fitted thick-walled functionally graded cylinders. It is assumed that the cylinders have constant Poisson’s ratio and the elastic modulus varies radially along the thickness with a power function. Furthermore, a finite element simulation is carried out using COMSOL Multiphysics, which has the advantage of defining material properties as analytical functions. The results from first order shear deformation theory are compared with the findings of both plane elasticity theory and FE simulation. The results of this study could be used to design and manufacture for elastic shrink-fitted FG cylinders.

Rotating structures can be easily encountered in engineering practice such as turbines, helicopter propellers, railroad tracks in turning positions, and so on. In such cases, it can be seen as a moving beam that rotates around a fixed axis. These structures commonly operate in hot weather; as a result, the arising temperature significantly changes their mechanical response, so studying the mechanical behavior of these structures in a temperature environment has great implications for design and use in practice. This work is the first exploration using the new shear deformation theory-type hyperbolic sine functions to carry out the free vibration analysis of the rotating functionally graded graphene beam resting on the elastic foundation taking into account the effects of both temperature and the initial geometrical imperfection. Equations for determining the fundamental frequencies as well as the vibration mode shapes of the beam are established, as mentioned, by the finite element method. The beam material is reinforced with graphene platelets (GPLs) with three types of GPL distribution ratios. The numerical results show numerous new points that have not been published before, especially the influence of the rotational speed, temperature, and material distribution on the free vibration response of the structure.

This paper describes a unified solution to investigate free vibration solutions of functionally graded (FG) spherical shell with general boundary restraints. The analytical model is established based on the first-order shear deformation theory, and the material varies uniformly along the thickness of FG spherical shell which is divided into several sections along the meridian direction. The displacement functions along circumferential and axial direction are, respectively, composed by Fourier series and Jacobi polynomial regardless of boundary restraints. The boundary restraints of FG spherical shell can be easily simulated according to penalty method of spring stiffness technique, and the vibration solutions are obtained by Rayleigh–Ritz method. To verify the reliability and accuracy of the present solutions, the convergence and numerical verification have been conducted about different boundary parameters, Jacobi parameter, etc. The results obtained by the present method closely agree with those obtained from the published literatures, experiments, and finite element method (FEM). The impacts of geometric dimensions and boundary conditions on the vibration characteristics of FG spherical shell structure are also presented.

A non-intrusive approach coupled with non-uniform rational B-splines based isogeometric finite element method is proposed here. The developed methodology was employed to study the stochastic static bending and free vibration characteristics of functionally graded material plates with inhered material randomness. A first order shear deformation theory with an artificial shear correction factor was used for spatial discretization. The output randomness is represented by polynomial chaos expansion. The robustness and accuracy of the framework were demonstrated by comparing the results with Monte Carlo simulations. A systematic parametric study was carried out to bring out the sensitivity of the input randomness on the stochastic output response using Sobol’ indices. Functionally graded plates made up of Aluminium (Al) and Zirconium Oxide (ZrO2) were considered in all the numerical examples.
