As structural systems approach their end of service life, integrity assessment and condition monitoring during late life becomes necessary in order to identify damage due to age-related issues such as corrosion and fatigue and hence prevent failure. In this paper, a novel method of level 3 damage identification (i.e. detection, localisation and quantification) from local vibration mode pair (LVMP) frequencies is introduced. Detection is achieved by observation of LVMP frequencies within any of the vibration modes investigated while the location of the damage is predicted based on the ranking order of the LVMP frequency ratios and the damage is quantified in terms of material volume loss from pre-established quantification relations. The proposed method which is baseline-free (in the sense that it does not require vibration-based assessment or modal data from the undamaged state of the pipe) and solely frequency-dependent was found to be more than 90% accurate in detecting, locating and quantifying damage through a numerical verification study. It was also successfully assessed using experimental modal data obtained from laboratory tests performed on an aluminium pipe with artificially inflicted corrosion-like damage underscoring a novel concept in vibration-based damage identification for pipes.

The article aims to present the modified structural composition of the sub-ballast layers of the railway substructure, in which a part of the natural materials for the establishment of sub-ballast or protective layers of crushed aggregate is replaced by thermal insulation and reinforcing material (layer of composite foamed concrete and extruded polystyrene board). In this purpose, the experimental field test was constructed and the bearing capacity of the modified sub-ballast layers’ structure and temperature parameters were analyzed. A significant increase in the original static modulus of deformation on the surface of composite foamed concrete was obtained (3.5 times and 18 times for weaker and strengthen subsoil, respectively). Based on real temperature measurement, it was determined the high consistency of the results of numerical analyses and experimental test (0.002 m for the maximum freezing depth of the railway line layers and maximum ±0.5 °C for temperature in the railway track substructure–subsoil system). Based on results of numerical analyses, modified railway substructure with built-in thermal insulating extruded materials (foamed concrete and extruded polystyrene) were considered. A nomogram for the implementation of the design of thicknesses of individual structural layers of a modified railway sub-ballast layers dependent on climate load, and a mathematical model suitable for the design of thicknesses of structural sub-ballast layers of railway line were created.

Rapid post-earthquake damage diagnosis of bridges can guide decision-making for emergency response management and recovery. This can be facilitated using digital technologies to remove the barriers of manual post-event inspections. Prior mechanics-based Finite Element (FE) models can be used for post-event response simulation using the measured ground motions at nearby stations; however, the damage assessment outcomes would suffer from uncertainties in structural and soil material properties, input excitations, etc. For instrumented bridges, these uncertainties can be reduced by integrating sensory data with prior models through a model updating approach. This study presents a sequential Bayesian model updating technique, through which a linear/nonlinear FE model, including soil-structure interaction effects, and the foundation input motions are jointly identified from measured acceleration responses. The efficacy of the presented model updating technique is first examined through a numerical verification study. Then, seismic data recorded from the San Rogue Canyon Bridge in California are used for a real-world case study. Comparison between the free-field and the foundation input motions reveals valuable information regarding the soil-structure interaction effects at the bridge site. Moreover, the reasonable agreement between the recorded and estimated bridge responses shows the potentials of the presented model updating technique for real-world applications. The updated FE model is considered as the digital twin of the bridge and can be used to analyze the bridge and monitor the structural response at element, section, and fiber levels to diagnose the location and severity of any potential damage mechanism.

Abstract The paper is focused on the analysis of effect of coupling strength and time delay for a pair of connected neurons on the dynamics of the system. The FitzHugh–Nagumo model is used as a neuron model. The article contains analytical conditions for Hopf bifurcations in the system. A numerical verification of the results is given. Several examples of global bifurcation in the system were analyzed.

AbstractThe vertices of two specific eigenvectors, obtained from a novel linear eigenvalue problem, describe two curves on the surface of an N-dimensional unit hypersphere. N denotes the number of degrees of freedom in the framework of structural analysis by the Finite Element Method. The radii of curvature of these two curves are 0 and 1. They correlate with pure stretching and pure bending, respectively, of structures. The two coefficient matrices of the eigenvalue problem are the tangent stiffness matrix at the load level considered and the one at the onset of loading. The goals of this paper are to report on the numerical verification of the aforesaid geometric-mechanical synergism and to summarize current attempts of its extension to combinations of stretching and bending of structures.

The biological system relies heavily on the interaction between prey and predator. Infections may spread from prey to predators or vice versa. This study proposes a virus-controlled prey-predator system with a Crowley–Martin functional response in the prey and an SI-type in the prey. A prey-predator model in which the predator uses both susceptible and sick prey is used to investigate the influence of harvesting parameters on the formation of dynamical fluctuations and stability at the interior equilibrium point. In the analytical section, we outlined the current circumstances for all possible equilibria. The stability of the system has also been explored, and the required conditions for the model’s stability at the equilibrium point have been found. In addition, we give numerical verification for our analytical findings with the help of graphical illustrations.

Abstract In this contribution, we present the analysis and numerical verification of the scattering phenomenon from a temporal interface in a parallel-plate waveguide realized by suddenly modifying the dimensions of the waveguide while the wave is propagating. As it is well known in guided wave theory, at the interface between two different waveguides there exists a change of the effective refractive index and wave impedance perceived by the propagating wave within the device, which inevitably scatters at the interface into a reflected and refracted wave. In analogous way, by suddenly changing the effective material properties within the whole waveguide, it is possible to realize the so-called temporal interface, as well. Here, we theoretically and numerically investigate on the scattering from a waveguide temporal interface induced by the abrupt change of the waveguide dimension, which in turn realize a change of the effective material properties perceived by the wave.
