Measurements of Mean Heat Transfer Coefficients for Turbulent Forced Convection in a Rectangular Duct With Uniformly Spaced Plate Inserts

An experimental investigation of turbulent forced convection from single and multiple heated plates in the spatially-periodic fully-developed region of air flows in a straight rectangular duct with uniformly spaced plate inserts is described. The focus in this work is on measurements of temporally- and spatially-averaged heat transfer coefficients on the surfaces of the aforementioned plates. The experimental technique is based on a lumped parameter analysis. Six different heated plates were specially designed, constructed, and instrumented for this work. Each of these heated plates was made up of a central metal section (brass, aluminum, or copper) and two plastic end sections (Ertalyte): the metal section was constructed from a top part and a bottom part, with grooves milled in the bottom part to accommodate three thermocouples and an electrical heating wire; the plastic sections were used to reduce the rates of heat loss from the ends to negligible amounts compared to that due to forced convection from the lateral surfaces of the metal section to the air. The Reynolds number used in the presentation of the results is based on the time-mean average streamwise velocity in the minimum cross-sectional area of the duct and a hydraulic diameter: its values ranged from 2,000 to 30,000. Details of the experimental technique used and the results obtained are presented and discussed.

Abstract A new experimental technique has been developed that permits the determination of local surface heat transfer coefficients on surfaces without requirement for calibration of the temperature-sensing device. The technique uses the phase delay that develops between the surface temperature response and an imposed periodic surface heat flux. This phase delay is dependent upon the thermophysical properties of the model, the heat flux driving frequency and the local heat transfer coefficient. It is not a function of magnitude of the local heat flux. Since only phase differences are being measured there is no requirement to calibrate the temperature sensor, in this instance a thermochromic liquid crystal. Application of a periodic surface heat flux to a flat plate resulted in a surface colour response that was a function of time. This response was captured using a standard colour CCD camera and the phase delay angles were determined using Fourier analysis. Only the 8 bit G component of the captured RGB signal was required, there being no need to determine a Hue value. From these experimentally obtained phase delay angles it was possible to determine heat transfer coefficients that compared well with those predicted using a standard correlation.

In this paper, convective and evaporative heat transfer coefficients of the Indian groundnut were computed under indoor forced convection drying (IFCD) mode. The groundnuts were dried as a single thin layer with the help of a laboratory dryer till the optimum safe moisture storage level of 8 – 10%. The experimental data were used to determine the values of experimental constants C and n in the Nusselt number expression by a simple linear regression analysis and consequently, the convective heat transfer coefficient (CHTC) was determined. The values of CHTC were used to calculate the evaporative heat transfer coefficient (EHTC). The average values of CHTC and EHTC were found to be 2.48 W/m2 oC and 35.08 W/m2 oC, respectively. The experimental error in terms of percent uncertainty was also estimated. The experimental error in terms of percent uncertainty was found to be 42.55%. The error bars for convective and evaporative heat transfer coefficients are also shown for the groundnut drying under IFCD condition.

The heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics for an array of colinear, equally spaced plates aligned parallel to the flow in a flat rectangular duct have been studied experimentally. The periodic interruptions (i.e., the gaps between the plates) preclude the attainment of hydrodynamic and thermal development of the type that is encountered in conventional duct flows, but a periodic fully developed regime can exist. Measurements of the heat transfer coefficients for the successive plates of the array affirmed the periodically developed regime and demonstrated the developmental pattern leading to its attainment. The thickness of the plates in the array was varied parametrically. In general, the Nusselt number increases with plate thickness. Thickness-related increases in the fully developed Nusselt number of up to 65 percent were encountered. The presence of the interruptions serves to augment the heat transfer coefficients. In the fully turbulent regime, the heat transfer coefficients are on the order of twice those for a conventional duct flow. The pressure drop also increases with the plate thickness.

Quasi-local absorption heat transfer coefficients and pressure drop inside a horizontal tube absorber have been investigated experimentally, with R-22/DMA as the working pair. The absorber is a counterflow coaxial tube-in-tube heat-exchanger with the working fluid flowing in the inner tube while the water moves through the annulus. A large temperature gliding has been experienced during the absorption process. Experimental results show that the heat transfer coefficient of the forced convective vapor absorption process is higher compared to the vertical falling film absorption. A qualitative study is made to analyze the effect of mass flux, vapor quality and solution concentration on pressure drop and heat transfer coefficients. On the basis of the experimental results, a new correlation is proposed whereby the two-phase heat transfer is taken as a product of the forced convection of the absorption and the combined effect of heat and mass transfer at the interface. The correlation is found to predict the experimental data almost within 30 percent.

An experimental study of forced convection heat transfer is reported. Direct air cooling of an electronics packaging system is modeled by a channel flow, with an array of uniformly sized and spaced elements attached to one channel wall. The presence of a single or complete row of longitudinally finned heat sinks creates a modified flow pattern. Convective heat transfer rates at downstream positions are measured and compared to that of a plain array (no heat sinks). Heat transfer rates are described in terms of adiabatic heat transfer coefficients and thermal wake functions. Empirical correlations are presented for both variations in Reynolds number (5000 < Re < 20,000) and heat sink geometry. It is found that the presence of a heat sink can both enhance and degrade the heat transfer coefficient at downstream locations, depending on the relative position.

Forced convection transient heat transfer coefficients have been measured for nitrogen gas flowing over a twisted heater due to exponentially increasing heat inputs (Q0exp(t/τ)). And then, the effect of heater configuration on transient heat transfer by a twisted heater has been investigated comparing to that of the plate heater. In the experiment, the platinum ribbon with a thickness of 0.1 mm and a width of 4.0 mm was used as a test heater. For heat transfer enhancements in single-phase flow, it was twisted at the central part of the heater with an angle of 90 degrees with respect to the upper part of the heater. The heat generation rate was exponentially increased with a function of Q0exp(t/τ). The gas flow velocity ranged from 1 to 4 m/s for the gas temperatures of 313K. The periods of heat generation rate ranged from 46 ms to 17 s. The surface temperature difference and heat flux increased exponentially as the heat generation rate increased with the exponential function. The heat transfer coefficients for twisted heater have been compared to those of the plate heater. They were 24 % higher than those of the plate one. The geometric effect (twisted effect) of heater in this study showed an enhancement on the heat transfer coefficient. It was considered that the heat transfer coefficients are affected by the change in the flow due to swirling flow on the twisted heater. Finally, the empirical correlations for quasi-steady-state heat transfer and transient one have been obtained based on the experimental data.

Conventional sources of energy have been depleting at an alarming rate, which makes future sustainable development of energy use very difficult. Thus, heat transfer enhancement technology plays an important role and it has been widely applied to many applications as in refrigeration, automotive, process industry, solar energy heater, etc. Convective heat transfer can be enhanced passively by changing flow geometry, boundary conditions or by increasing thermal conductivity of the fluid. Another possibility for increasing heat transfer with gas is to employ extended surfaces. In this paper a numerical investigation is carried out on forced convection in circular tubes with septa heated by constant fluxes and characterized by different shapes. When gas flows in a tube, septa with one or more openings can be used as fins. Furthermore, when the openings are arranged to give a spiral motion around the cylinder axis wall-fluid contact area increases. As a consequence the presence of the septa may significantly augment pressure drops. The fluid is air and properties are function of temperature. Septa of the same material of the tube are introduced and several shapes and arrangements are analyzed as well as different Reynolds numbers, baffle spacings and heat fluxes applied on the external surface. The investigation is accomplished by means of the commercial code Fluent. A k-e turbulence model is used with enhanced wall treatment options. Results are presented in terms of temperature and velocity fields, local and average heat transfer coefficients, friction factors and pressure drops for different values of heat flux, Reynolds numbers and baffle spacings. The aim of this study is to find the shape and arrangement of septa such to give high heat transfer coefficients and low pressure drops.

Flow boiling heat transfer in a single small tube is investigated by using FC72 as a working fluid. The heat transfer coefficients are measured in the ranges of heat flux 2–24kW/m2 and mass velocity 100–400kg/m2s under the condition of near atmospheric pressure. Test tube, made of stainless steel, has an inner diameter of 0.51mm and a heated length of 200mm. The tube is located horizontally in a vacuum chamber to reduce the heat loss and to minimize the time to obtain data regarded as that of steady state. In the single-phase region, heat transfer coefficients due to forced convection are in good agreement with the values from the conventional theories. In the saturated region, measured heat transfer characteristics are quite different depending on whether the test liquid is deaerated or not deaerated before the experiments. By using deaerated liquid, three different heat transfer regimes are observed: In the first regime, the heat transfer is dominated by nucleate boiling in low vapor quality, and the heat transfer is deteriorated or enhanced depending on the channel confinement and heat flux. In the second regime, the heat transfer is dominated by two-phase forced convection in moderate quality as is well known for the tubes of normal size. In the third regime, the heat transfer is dominated again by two-phase forced convection, but is deteriorated in high quality. One or two regimes can disappear or become unclear depending on the conditions of flow and heating. The effects of vapor quality and mass velocity on the heat transfer characteristics due to two-phase forced convection in the moderate vapor quality are clarified in the experimental ranges tested. And a reason for the gradual heat transfer deterioration observed in high quality is discussed based on the liquid-vapor behaviors inherent in small diameter tubes.
