The effects of dissolved air in the dielectric liquid FC-77 on flow boiling in a microchannel heat sink containing 10 parallel channels, each 500 μm wide and 2.5 mm deep, were experimentally investigated. Experiments were conducted before and after degassing, at three flow rates in the range of 30 to 50 ml/min. The dissolved air resulted in a significant reduction in wall temperature at which bubbles were first observed in the microchannels. Analysis of the results suggests that the bubbles observed initially in the undegassed liquid were most likely air bubbles. Once the boiling process is initiated, the wall temperature continues to increase for the undegassed liquid, while it remains relatively unchanged in the case of the degassed liquid. Prior to the inception of boiling in the degassed liquid, the heat transfer coefficients with the undegassed liquid were 300–500% higher than for degassed liquid, depending on the flow rate. The heat transfer coefficients for both cases reach similar values at high heat fluxes (over 120 kW/m2) once the boiling process with the degassed liquid was well established. The boiling process induced a significant increase in pressure drop relative to single-phase flow; the pressure drop for undegassed liquid was measured to be higher than for degassed liquid once the boiling process became well established in both cases. Flow instabilities were induced by the boiling process, and the magnitude of the instability was quantified using the standard deviation of the measured pressure drop at a given heat flux. It was found that the magnitude of flow instability increased with increasing heat flux in both the undegassed and degassed liquids, with greater flow instability noted in the undegassed liquid.

Flow boiling in microporous layers has attracted a great deal of attention in the enhanced heat transfer field due to its high heat dissipation potential. In this study, flow boiling experiments were performed on both porous microchannels and a copper-based microchannel, using water as the coolant. As the heat flux was less than 80 W/cm2, the porous microchannels presented significantly higher boiling heat transfer coefficients than the copper-based microchannel. This was closely associated with the promotion of the nucleation site density of the porous coating. With the further increase in heat flux, the heat transfer coefficients of the porous microchannels were close to those of the copper-based sample. The boiling process in the porous microchannel was found to be dominated by the nucleate boiling mechanism from low to moderate heat flux (<80 W/cm2).This switched to the convection boiling mode at high heat flux. The porous samples were able to mitigate flow instability greatly. A visual observation revealed that porous microchannels could suppress the flow fluctuation due to the establishment of a stable nucleate boiling process. Porous microchannels showed no advantage over the copper-based sample in the critical heat flux. The optimal thickness-to-particle-size ratio (δ/d) for the porous microchannel was confirmed to be between 2–5. In this range, the maximum enhanced effect on boiling heat transfer could be achieved.

Abstract C O 2 flow boiling heat transfer coefficients and pressure drop in a 3.5mm horizontal smooth tube are presented. Also, flow patterns were visualized and studied at adiabatic conditions in a 3mm glass tube located immediately after a heat transfer section. Heat was applied by a secondary fluid through two brass half cylinders to the test section tubes. This research was performed at evaporation temperatures of −15°C and −30°C, mass fluxes of 200kg∕m2s and 400kg∕m2s, and heat flux from 5kW∕m2 to 15kW∕m2 for vapor qualities ranging from 0.1 to 0.8. The CO2 heat transfer coefficients indicated the nucleate boiling dominant heat transfer characteristics such as the strong dependence on heat fluxes at a mass flux of 200kg∕m2s. However, enhanced convective boiling contribution was observed at 400kg∕m2s. Surface conditions for two different tubes were investigated with a profilometer, atomic force microscope, and scanning electron microscope images, and their possible effects on heat transfer are discussed. Pressure drop, measured at adiabatic conditions, increased with the increase of mass flux and quality, and with the decrease of evaporation temperature. The measured heat transfer coefficients and pressure drop were compared with general correlations. Some of these correlations showed relatively good agreements with measured values. Visualized flow patterns were compared with two flow pattern maps and the comparison showed that the flow pattern maps need improvement in the transition regions from intermittent to annular flow.

A test rig was constructed to investigate flow boiling in an electrically heated horizontal mini-channel array. The test section is made of copper and consists of twelve parallel mini-channels. The channels are 1 mm deep, 1 mm wide and 250 mm long. The test section is heated from underneath with six cartridge heaters. The channels are covered with a glass plate to allow visual observations of the flow patterns using a high-speed video-camera. The wall temperatures are measured at five positions along the channel axis with two resistance thermometers in a specified distance in heat flow direction. Local heat transfer coefficients are obtained by calculating the local heat flux. The working fluids are deionised water and ethanol. The experiments were performed under near atmospheric pressure (0.94 bar to 1.2 bar absolute). The inlet temperature was kept constant at 20°C. The measurements were taken for three mass fluxes (120; 150; 185 kg/m2s) at heat fluxes from 7 to 375 kW/m2. Heat transfer coefficients are presented for single phase forced convection, subcooled and saturated flow boiling conditions. The heat transfer coefficient increases slightly with rising heat flux for single phase flow. A strong increase is observed in subcooled flow boiling. At high heat flux the heat transfer coefficient decreases slightly with increasing heat flux. The application of ethanol instead of water leads to an increase of the surface temperature. At the same low heat flux flow boiling heat transfer occurs with ethanol, but in the experiments with water single phase heat transfer is still dominant. It is because of the lower specific heat capacity of ethanol compared to water. There is a slight influence of the mass flux in the investigated parameter range. The pictures of a high-speed video-camera are analysed for the two-phase flow-pattern identification.

With a single microchannel and a series of microheaters made with MEMS technique, two-phase pressure drop and local flow boiling heat transfer were investigated using deionized water in a single horizontal rectangular microchannel. The test microchannel has a hydraulic diameter of 100 μm and length of 40 mm. A real time observation of the flow patterns with simultaneous measurement are made possible. Tests are performed for mass fluxes of 90, 169, and 267 kg/m2s and heat fluxes of from 100 to 600 kW/m2. The experimental local flow boiling heat transfer coefficients and two-phase frictional pressure gradient are evaluated and the effects of heat flux, mass flux, and vapor qualities on flow boiling are studied. Both the evaluated experimental data are compared with existing correlations. The experimental heat transfer coefficients are nearly independent on mass flux and the vapor quality. Most of all correlations do not provide reliable heat transfer coefficients predictions with vapor quality and prediction accuracy. As for two-phase pressure drop, the measured pressure drop increases with the mass flux and heat flux. Most of all existing correlations of two-phase frictional pressure gradient do not predict the experimental data except some limited conditions.

This paper presents a review of differences and similarities of in-tube heat transfer and pressure drop between ammonia (NH3) and carbon dioxide (CO2) from the perspective of the design of heat exchangers for NH3 two-stage and CO2/NH3 cascade refrigeration systems. The focus is on differences in thermophysical properties and thus different characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop. A brief summary of published literatures about CO2/NH3 cascade refrigeration systems is provided and literature review of available correlations and developed correlations are presented for flow boiling and condensation heat transfer and pressure drop. Because of large deviation of calculated values with exiting correlations from measured results, a new correlation to predict flow condensation heat transfer coefficients was developed based on experimental results for CO2 at -15°C. From comparison of measured and predicted values, it is shown that some correlations, previously published in open literature, can be used to calculate flow boiling heat transfer coefficients for NH3 at -20°C, if a flow pattern can be appropriately determined for a flow condition. Also, it is presented that existing correlations can predict well the heat transfer coefficients for CO2 flow boiling at -15 and -30°C. It is shown that some correlations can predict pressure drop relatively well for NH3 and CO2 two-phase flow. The NH3 and CO2 flow evaporation heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics at -40°C are compared with predicted values.

An experiment of natural circulation of supercritical water in parallel channels was performed in bare tubes of inner diameter 7.98 mm and heated length 1.3 m, covering the ranges of pressure of 24.7–25.5 MPa, mass flux of 400–1000  kg/m2 s, and heat flux of up to 1.83  MW/m2. When the heat flux reached 1.12  MW/m2, the outlet water temperature jumped from 325°C to 360°C, associated with a decrease in the flow rate and an initiation of dynamic instability. When the heat flux exceeded 1.39  MW/m2, the flow instability was stronger, and the flow rate increased in one channel and decreased in another one. Until the heat flux reached 1.61  MW/m2, the outlet water temperatures of two channels reached the pseudocritical point, and the flow rates of two channels tended to close each other. The experiment with a single heated channel was also performed for comparison. The measurements on the heat-transfer coefficients (HTCs) were compared to the calculations by the Bishop et al., Jackson’s, and Mokry et al. correlations, showing different agreements within various conditions.

R22 is the most widely employed HCFC working fluid in vapour compression plant. HCFCs must be replaced within 2020. Major problems arise with the substitution of the working fluids, related to the decrease in performance of the plant. Therefore, extremely accurate design procedures are needed. The relative sizing of each of the components of the plant is crucial for cycle performance. For this reason, the knowledge of the new fluids heat transfer characteristics in condensers and evaporators is required. The local heat transfer coefficients and pressure drop of pure R22 and of the azeotropic mixture R507 (R125-R143a 50%/50% in weight) have been measured during convective boiling. The test section is a smooth horizontal tube made of a with a 6 mm I.D. stainless steel tube, 6 m length, uniformly heated by Joule effect. The effects of heat flux, mass flux and evaporation pressure on the heat transfer coefficients are investigated. The evaporating pressure varies within the range 3 ÷10 bar, the refrigerant mass flux within the range 200 ÷ 1000 kg/m2s, the heat flux within 0 ÷ 44 kW/m2. A comparison have been carried out between the experimental data and those predicted by means of the most credited literature relationships.

The effects of chip protrusion on the forced-convection boiling and critical heat flux (CHF) of a dielectric coolant (FC-72) were investigated. The multi-chip module used in the present study featured a linear array of nine, 10 mm x 10 mm, simulated microelectronic chips which protruded 1 mm into a 20-mm wide side of a rectangular flow channel. Experiments were performed in vertical up flow with 5-mm and 2-mm channel gap thicknesses. For each configuration, the velocity and subcooling of the liquid were varied from 13 to 400 cm/s and 3 to 36° C, respectively. The nucleate boiling regime was not affected by changes in velocity and subcooling, and critical heat flux generally increased with increases in either velocity or subcooling. Higher single-phase heat transfer coefficients and higher CHF values were measured for the protruded chips compared to similar flush-mounted chips. However, adjusting the data for the increased surface area and the increased liquid velocity above the chip caused by the protruding chips yielded a closer agreement between the protruded and flush-mounted results. Even with the velocity and area adjustments, the most upstream protruded chip had higher single-phase heat transfer coefficients and CHF values for high velocity and/or highly-subcooled flow as compared the downstream protruded chips. The results show that, except for the most upstream chip, the performances of protruded chips are very similar to those of flush-mounted chips.
