A Method for RCCA Drop Analysis

The control rod drop time is one of the most important parameters for safety analysis. The calculation accuracy of control rod drop time will be affected if ignoring the transverse vibration, which is mainly caused by the fluid-structure interaction between the RCCA (rod cluster control assembly)s, guide tubes and the fluid interaction. A new method for RCCA drop analysis is presented in this paper. The transverse equations of motion are established considering fluid-elastic structure interaction, assuming the fluid is incompressible laminar flow. And the vertical equations of motion are established considering the gravity force of RCCAs, the fluid resistance, and the friction force led by collision. A computer program based on this method is used to calculate the control rod drop time, the impact and the dynamic response of RCCA. The analysis results are compared with those of the in-house code, which is used for commercial design. It shows the computer program using the new models provides a useful tool in the design of RCCAs and fuel assemblies.

China is developing an ADS (Accelerator-Driven System) research device named the China initiative accelerator-driven system (CiADS). When performing a safety analysis of this new proposed design, the core behavior during the steam generator tube rupture (SGTR) accident has to be investigated. The purpose of our research in this paper is to investigate the impact from different heating conditions and inlet steam contents on steam bubble and coolant temperature distributions in ADS fuel assemblies during a postulated SGTR accident by performing necessary computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. In this research, the open source CFD calculation software OpenFOAM, together with the two-phase VOF (Volume of Fluid) model were used to simulate the steam bubble behavior in heavy liquid metal flow. The model was validated with experimental results published in the open literature. Based on our simulation results, it can be noticed that steam bubbles will accumulate at the periphery region of fuel assemblies, and the maximum temperature in fuel assembly will not overwhelm its working limit during the postulated SGTR accident when the steam content at assembly inlet is less than 15%.

Treatment of the first natural frequency of a rotating nanocomposite beam reinforced with graphene platelet is discussed here. In regard of the Timoshenko beam theory hypothesis, the motion equations are acquired. The effective elasticity modulus of the rotating nanocomposite beam is specified resorting to the Halpin–Tsai micro mechanical model. The Ritz technique is utilized for the sake of discretization of the nonlinear equations of motion. The first natural frequency of the rotating nanocomposite beam prior to the buckling instability and the associated post-critical natural frequency is computed by means of a powerful iteration scheme in reliance on the Newton–Raphson method alongside the iteration strategy. The impact of adding the graphene platelet to a rotating isotropic beam in thermal ambient is discussed in detail. The impression of support conditions, and the weight fraction and the dispersion type of the graphene platelet on the acquired outcomes are studied. It is elucidated that when a beam has not undergone a temperature increment, by reinforcing the beam with graphene platelet, the natural frequency is enhanced. However, when the beam is in a thermal environment, at low-to-medium range of rotational velocity, adding the graphene platelet diminishes the first natural frequency of a rotating O-GPL nanocomposite beam. Depending on the temperature, the post-critical natural frequency of a rotating X-GPL nanocomposite beam may be enhanced or reduced by the growth of the graphene platelet weight fraction.

The results of a study of a nonlinear mechanical oscillator with elastic impacts are presented. The experiment was carried out using an electromechanical impact oscillator. The theoretical model is based on the equations of motion, taking into account the elastic force, which is calculated under the Hertz contact theory. It is shown that bifurcations and attractors of the “stable focus” and “limit cycle” types can occur for the impact oscillator. Fourier filtering was used to analyze the spectral characteristics of the signals.

We numerically investigate the mechanism leading to the entrapment of spheres at the gas–liquid interface after impact. Upon impact onto a liquid pool, a hydrophobic sphere is seen to follow one of the three regimes identified in the experiment (Lee & Kim, Langmuir, vol. 24, 2008, pp. 142–145): sinking, bouncing or being entrapped at the interface. It is important to understand the role of wettability in this process of flow–structure interaction with dynamic wetting, and in particular, to what extent the wettability can determine whether the sphere is entrapped at the interface. For this purpose, a diffuse-interface immersed boundary method is adopted in the numerical simulations. We expand the parameter space considered previously, provide the phase diagrams and identify the key phenomena in the impact dynamics. Then, we propose the scaling models to interpret the critical conditions for the occurrence of sphere entrapment, accounting for the wettability of the sphere. The models are shown to provide a good correlation among the impact inertia of the drop, the surface tension, the wettability and the density ratio of the sphere to the liquid.

Abstract This paper presents a method for analyzing the dynamic characteristics of driving systems consisting of multiple belts and pulleys. First, the algorithm which derives the linear equations of motion of arbitrary multi-coupled belt systems is shown. Secondly, by using the algorithm, the computer program which formulates the equations of motion and calculates the transient responses of the belt system is presented. The fundamental idea of the algorithm is as follows: Complicated belt systems consisting of multiple belts and pulleys are regarded as combinations of simple belt systems consisting of a single belt and some pulleys. Therefore, the equations of motion of the belt systems can be derived by the superposition of the equations of motion of the simple belt systems. By means of this method, the responses of arbitrary multi-coupled belt systems can be calculated. Finally, to verify the usefulness of this method, the simulation results are compared with the experimental results.

The coupled heave and pitch motions of hull forms with flare and overhangs are examined numerically. The presence of flare and overhangs is numerically modelled with nonlinear hydrostatic and Froude-Krylov forces based on integrals over the instantaneous wetted surface. Forces due to radiation and diffraction are computed with a linear strip-theory. These forces are combined in two coupled nonlinear differential equations of motion that are solved in the time domain with a fourth-order Runge-Kutta integration method. An assessment of the impact of flare and overhangs on motions is obtained by comparing these nonlinear solutions with solutions of the traditional linear equations of motion, which do not contain forces due to flare and overhangs. For an example based on an International America's Cup Class yacht design, it is found that the nonlinear heave and pitch motions are smaller than the linear motions. This is primarily due to reduced first-order response components, which are coupled with nonlinear response components. Comparisons of these results with towing tank data demonstrate that the nonlinear procedure improves prediction quality relative to linear results. In support of this numerical work, the hydrostatic and Froude­Krylov force integrals are expanded in Taylor series with respect to wave elevation. These results indicate how hydrostatic and Froude-Krylov forces change with changing flare and overhang angles, revealing that sectional slope has second and third-order effects on forces while sectional curvature and overhang angles produce third-order effects.

Abstract The aim of this paper is to analyze the effect of the gravity force on the impact-induced elastic waves which propagate on a radially rotating rod. The equations of motion of the system are developed using the principle of virtual work in dynamics. The impact load is included by the use of the generalized impulse momentum equations, involving the coefficient of restitution. The system is solved using the Fourier method. The deformation of the rod is supposed to be at any instant a linear combination of a set of shape functions. These shape functions are, in this investigation, the modes of a cantilever beam. The weight of the rod is modeled as a concentrated force applied at any instant at the center of the rod.
