Numerical Simulation of Multiple Seeds Interaction During Three-Dimensional Dendritic Solidification With Fluid Flow

Most material of engineering interest undergoes solidification process from liquid to solid state which governs the microstructure of materials. Identifying the growth characteristic of the microstructure during the solidification process is essential to determine the physical properties of final product. Numerical simulation can provide valuable information during solidification process since heat and mass transfer associated with micro-structural growth of dendrite is in greatly small scale which is almost impossible to obtain by experiments. In real situations, dendrite tends to grow from multiple seeds as well as with external fluid flow. Growth characteristics of the dendrites will be greatly influenced by both external fluid convection and interaction between dendrites. In this paper, three-dimensional numerical simulation of multiple dendritic growth during solidification process with melt fluid convection is presented. The high-order Level Contour Reconstruction Method (LCRM), a hybrid form of Front-Tracking and Level-Set, is used to track the moving liquid-solid interface explicitly and sharp interface technique has been used to implement correct phase changing boundary conditions on the moving interface. To get the indicator function and the interface curvature more efficiently and accurately for three-dimensional simulation, we have generated the distance function directly from the interface. The method is validated by comparing with other numerical technique and showed good agreements. Three-dimensional results showed clear difference compared to two-dimensional simulation on growth behavior, especially with multiple seeds.

The aim of the present research is to characterize both experimentally and numerically journal bearings with low radial clearances for rotors in small-scale applications (e.g., microgas turbines); their diameter is in the order of ten millimetres, leading to very small dimensional clearances when the typical relative ones (order of 1/1000) are employed; investigating this particular class of journal bearings under static and dynamic loading conditions represents something unexplored. To this goal, a suitable test rig was designed and the performance of its bearings was investigated under steady load. For the sake of comparison, numerical simulations of the lubrication were also performed by means of a simplified model. The original test rig adopted is a commercial rotor kit (RK), but substantial modifications were carried out in order to allow significant measurements. Indeed, the relative radial clearance of RK4 RK bearings is about 2/100, while it is around 1/1000 in industrial bearings. Therefore, the same original RK bearings are employed in this new test rig, but a new shaft was designed to reduce their original clearance. The new custom shaft allows to study bearing behaviour for different clearances, since it is equipped with interchangeable journals. Experimental data obtained by this test rig are then compared with further results of more sophisticated simulations. They were carried out by means of an in-house developed finite element (FEM) code, suitable for thermoelasto-hydrodynamic (TEHD) analysis of journal bearings both in static and dynamic conditions. In this paper, bearing static performances are studied to assess the reliability of the experimental journal location predictions by comparing them with the ones coming from already validated numerical codes. Such comparisons are presented both for large and small clearance bearings of original and modified RKs, respectively. Good agreement is found only for the modified RK equipped with small clearance bearings (relative radial clearance 8/1000), as expected. In comparison with two-dimensional lubrication analysis, three-dimensional simulation improves prediction of journal location and correlation with experimental results.

<p>Landslide-generated waves have been major threats to coastal areas and have led to destruction and casualties. Their importance is undisputed, most recently demonstrated by the 2018 Anak Krakatau tsunami, causing several hundred fatalities. The accurate prediction of the maximum initial amplitude of landslide waves (<em>η<sub>max</sub></em>) around the source region is a vital hazard indicator for coastal impact assessment. Laboratory experiments, analytical solutions and numerical modelling are three major methods to investigate the (<em>η<sub>max</sub></em>). However, the numerical modelling approach provides a more flexible and cost- and time-efficient tool. This research presents a numerical simulation of tsunamis due to rigid landslides with consideration of submerged conditions. In particular, this simulation focuses on studying the effect of landslide parameters on <em>η<sub>max</sub>.</em> Results of simulations are compared with our conducted physical experiments at the Brunel University London (UK) to validate the numerical model.</p><p>We employ the fully three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics package, FLOW-3D Hydro for modelling the landslide-generated waves. This software benefit from the Volume of Fluid Method (VOF) as the numerical technique for tracking and locating the free surface. The geometry of the simulation is set up according to the wave tank of physical experiments (i.e. 0.26 m wide, 0.50 m deep and 4.0 m). In order to calibrate the simulation model based on the laboratory measurements, the friction coefficient between solid block and incline is changed to 0.41; likewise, the terminal velocity of the landslide is set to 0.87 m/s. Good agreement between the numerical solutions and the experimental results is found. Sensitivity analyses of landslide parameters (e.g. slide volume, water depth, etc.) on <em>η<sub>max </sub></em>are performed. Dimensionless parameters are employed to study the sensitivity of the initial landslide waves to various landslide parameters.</p>

The oscillatory flow in a baffled tube reactor provides a significant enhancement of radial transfer of momentum, heat and mass and a good control of axial back mixing at a wide range of net flow rate. But little has been known about reliable details of the three-dimensional structure of flow field in this kind of flow because most published studies in the area were based on the two-dimensional simulation techniques. This paper implemented a three-dimensional numerical simulation study on the asymmetry of flow pattern in the baffled tube reactor which was observed experimentally. A systematic study by numerical simulation was carried out which covered a range of oscillatory Reynolds number (Reo) from 100 to 5,000 and employed models respectively for laminar and turbulent flows. It was found in the simulation that under symmetric boundary conditions the transition from axially symmetric flow to asymmetric one depended on the numerical technique employed in simulation. With a structured grid frame the transition occurred at Reo much greater than that with an unstructured grid frame, for both laminar and turbulent flows. It is not rational that the onset of the transition changes with the accuracy of numerical technique. Based on the simulation results, it was postulated that the asymmetry appeared in simulations with symmetric boundary conditions might result from the accumulation of calculation errors but the asymmetry observed in experiments might result from the slight asymmetry of geometry which exists inevitably in any experiment apparatus. To explore the influence of the slight asymmetry of geometry, the effect of the eccentricity of baffles and the declination of oscillating boundary were studied by use of the finite volume method with a structured grid and adaptive time steps. The simulation result showed that both the eccentricity of baffles and the declination of oscillating boundary have obvious influence on the asymmetry of flow patterns for laminar and turbulent flow. Thermopneumatic micropump is one type of positive displacement micropump, which has many applications due to its relatively large stroke volume, low working voltage, and simple fabrication in microscale. In this paper, a numerical study of heat transfer and fluid flow in a valveless thermopneumatically driven micropump is presented. For rectifying the bidirectional flow, a nozzle and a diffuser are used as the inlet and outlet channels of the chamber. Since the fluid flow is induced by the motion of a diaphragm, the numerical simulation includes fluid structure interaction, which requires applying a dynamic mesh. The domain of solution is divided into two sections; the actuator unit, which contains the secondary fluid, and the main chamber through which the working fluid is passing. The temperature distribution, the pressure variations, and the center deflection of the diaphragm are obtained. In order to validate the model, the numerical results are compared with some experimental data, which shows fair consistency. According to the results of the three dimensional simulation, the rectification efficiency for the nozzle and diffuser channels depends on the frequency.

Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) are catching more and more attentions for their broad application in civilian and military fields. Since the theories on the aerodynamics of low Reynolds number are not maturely presented and the wind-tunnel experiments cost long periods and great expenses. The numerical simulation based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a good method to choose. Through three-dimensional simulation of the wings, the aerodynamic characteristics of the flows around MAVs can be easily obtained. The tip vortices produced around low-Reynolds-number and low-aspect-ratio wings can increase the lift and stall angles. The result of numerical simulation can be used as references of theory analysis and wind-tunnel experiments.
