There is a growing need for expertise both in image analysis and in software engineering. To date, these two areas have been taught separately in an undergraduate computer and information science curriculum. However, we have found that introduction to image analysis can be easily integrated in data-structure courses without detracting from the original goal of teaching data structures. Some of the image processing tasks offer a natural way to introduce basic data structures such as arrays, queues, stacks, trees and hash tables. Not only does this integrated strategy expose the students to image related manipulations at an early stage of the curriculum but it also imparts cohesiveness to the data-structure assignments and brings them closer to real life. In this paper we present a set of programming assignments that integrates undergraduate data-structure education with image processing tasks. These assignments can be incorporated in existing data-structure courses with low time and software overheads. We have used these assignment sets thrice: once in a 10-week duration data-structure course at the University of California, Santa Barbara and the other two times in 15-week duration courses at the University of South Florida, Tampa.

Payload oscillation inherent to all cranes makes it challenging for human operators to manipulate payloads quickly, accurately, and safely. A new type of crane control interface that allows an operator to drive a crane by moving his or her hand freely in space has been implemented on an industrial bridge crane. An image processing system tracks the movement of a glove worn on the operator’s hand and its position is then used to drive the crane. Matlab simulations of the crane dynamics and hand-motion control were compared with actual experimental data. The results show that a combination of aggressive PD gains and an input shaper is able to generate the desired characteristics of fast payload response and low residual oscillations.

Integral sum graph was introduced by Harary. This theory is a labeling of graph. From a practical point of view, integral sum graph labeling can be used as a compressed representation of a graph, a data structure for representing the graph, and an alternative method for defining and storing graphs. In this paper, to give an integral sum labeling of fan graph, and to prove that all multiple composite fan graph are integral sum graphs with the sequence label method.

This paper introduces an acquiring and processing system of a new type of optical spectrometer based on vision technology. It mainly introduces the hardware structure to acquire the spectrums dispersed by the spectrometer, and the multi-spectrum image processing software as well. Of the different spectrum wavelengths ranges from 400nm to 740nm, the system can create both the color image and the 68 channels gray scale image. Virtual instruments technology is introduced into this system and it makes programming easier and faster by combining virtual instrument and vision technology. The programming of the image processing software uses LabVIEW platform.

<div>Laplacian kernels, which are widely used as sharpening filters in image processing, are isotropic and tend to over-highlight fine details with a sharp discontinuity in images. To address this issue, this paper introduces a method that integrates anisotropic averaging with the Laplacian kernels. </div><div>The proposed method can also be useful as a new type of image convolution for designing convolutional neural networks. </div>

The system in the paper based on Matlab platform. With the aid of image processing toolbox of soil image analysis and processing, the soil grain size distribution and its inclination angle can be got. It overcomes the insufficiency of the existing image edge extraction method, and proposes a new type of detection method, in order that the region of interest can be more accurately extract. The system is helpful to predict the possibility of the regional landslides.

The external wall insulation method was introduced to enhance the energy efficiency of existing buildings. It does not cause a decrease of inner space and costs less in comparison to methods that insert insulation panels inside walls. However, it has been reported that external wall insulation boards are disconnecting from walls due to malfunctions of the adhesive. This causes not only repair costs, but also serious injury to pedestrians. Separation problems occur when the bonded positions are incorrect and/or the total area and thickness of the adhesive is smaller than the required amount. A challenge is that these faults can hardly be inspected after installing boards. For this reason, a real-time inspection system is necessary to detect potential failure during adhesive works. Position, area and thickness are major aspects to inspect, and thus a method to process image data of these seems efficient. This paper presents a real-time quality inspection system introducing image processing technology to detect potential errors during adhesive works of external wall insulation, and it is predicted to contribute to achieving sustainable remodeling construction by reducing squandered material and labor costs. The system consists of a graphic data creation module to capture the results of adhesive works and a quality inspection module to judge the pass or fail of works according to an algorithm. A prototype is developed and validated against 100 panels with 800 adhesive points.
