The purpose of this paper is to contextualize and analyze the lyrics of Tupac Shakur by using the research methodological approach of concatenation to merge hip-hop and sport so that the qualitative data from these songs might serve as a cultural map to constructs of identity, race, social class, and black masculinity in the context of sport and the black male athlete experience in America. Applying critical race theory and White’s framework of black masculinity and the politics of racial performance, a connection is made with themes of the artists’ (rapper) social commentary and the athlete (baller). The themes from Tupac Shakur’s lyrics are follows: (a) Trapped, (b) Against the World, (c) The Streetz R Death, and (d) Ambitionz. Synergy with the rapper and baller are articulated, as well as implications for scholars and practitioners that work with high school, collegiate, and professional black male athletes, along with other men of color.

This multilayered study of the representation of black masculinity in musical and cultural performance takes aim at the reduction of African American male culture to stereotypes of deviance, misogyny, and excess. Broadening the significance of hip-hop culture by linking it to other expressive forms within popular culture, the book examines how these representations have both encouraged the demonization of young black males in the United States and abroad and contributed to the construction of their identities. The book traces black male representations to chattel slavery and American minstrelsy as early examples of fetishization and commodification of black male subjectivity. Continuing with diverse discussions including black action films, heavyweight prizefighting, Elvis Presley's performance of blackness, and white rappers such as Vanilla Ice and Eminem, the book establishes a sophisticated framework for interpreting and critiquing black masculinity in hip-hop music and culture. Arguing that black music has undeniably shaped American popular culture and that hip-hop tropes have exerted a defining influence on young male aspirations and behavior, the book draws a critical link between the body, musical sound, and the construction of identity.

This chapter focuses on comparisons between minstrelsy and constructions of black masculinity in hip-hop music and culture, particularly the context of hard and hardcore styles of rap performance. Since minstrelsy, blackness has been one of America's primary cultural exports. Furthermore, hip-hop music and culture have been integral in the construction of a new cultural complex of racial perceptions about black masculinity and the black male body. In addition, the chapter shows how black masculinity can be relocated and transposed not simply to other geographical locations, but onto other kinds of bodies in representations that reproduce and perpetuate pejorative understandings of black subjectivities.

This essay uses Tupac Shakur’s Me Against the World as a case study examining how Black male artists use hip-hop music for articulating the racialized vulnerability organizing their manhood. By thinking about how Shakur understands his Black maleness through his social relationality to the world around him, Shakur’s album creates resistive space for defining Black maleness despite how Black masculinity is often defined and imposed on Black men. Shakur’s album maps a relational network for understanding a brand of Black manhood obscured by dominant discourses about Black men and their masculinity. Specifically, Shakur’s album frames Black maleness through poverty and how it orients Black men, his perpetual susceptibility to harm and death, and suicide ideation as a response to his despair. Connecting Black maleness and vulnerability, Shakur’s album offers insight about being Black and male in a patriarchal White supremacist society.

Conceptualized using critical race theory as a theoretical underpinning, this study analyzed the lived experiences of older, rural, African American male prostate cancer (hereafter referenced as PrCA) survivors’ faith and health promotion practices within Northeast Louisiana. Qualitative data from journaling, observations, and semi-structured interviews were obtained from ten older, African American male PrCA survivors residing in four rural parishes of Louisiana. The data analysis employed a two-stage approach known as Polkinghorne’s analysis of narratives and narrative analysis using an art-based methodological approach. Framed as composite character counterstories, survivors’ narratives revealed how survivors made sense of and gave meaning to their PrCA diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and survivorship. Specifically, their counterstories indicate that centering and honoring the unique and often taken-for-granted perspectives of older, rural, African American male PrCA survivors offered a deeper understanding of the multiple factors influencing their quality of life, as well as the sociostructural mechanisms impacting their survivorship care. Faith was examined as both a secular and sacred source of support that these men viewed as central to the acceptance of their diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and survivorship.

Abstract The aim of this paper is to examine the functionality of impoliteness strategies as rhetorical devices employed by acclaimed African American and White hip-hop artists. It focuses on the social and artistic function of the key discursive element of hip-hop, namely aggressive language. The data for this paper comprise songs of US African American and White performers retrieved from the November 2017 ‘TOP100 Chart’ for international releases on Spotify.com. A cursory look at the sub-corpora (Black male/ Black female/ White male/ White female artists’ sub-corpus) revealed the prominence of the ‘use taboo words’ impoliteness strategy. The analysis of impoliteness instantiations by considering race and gender as determining factors in the lyrics selection process unveiled that both male groups use impoliteness strategies more frequently than female groups. It is also suggested that Black male and White female singers employ impoliteness to resist oppression, offer a counter-narrative about their own experience and self (re)presentation and reinforce in group solidarity.

This qualitative study explores the perspectives and experiences of Black male student-athletes with particular focus on their interactions with school counselors. It draws on nine participants selected through purposive and snowball sampling techniques. The Black male participants were current or former student-athletes at the high school and Division I levels. We developed and analyzed the semistructured interview questions through the lens of critical race theory. Using deductive data analysis techniques, we identified key factors that appear to shape interactions between Black male student-athletes and school counselors, including the perception of the school counselor role, a village of support, and prior experiences with school counselors. The results of this study have implications for school counselor practice, policy, and research.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui: 1) adakah pengaruh latihan Box jump terhadap vertical jump atlet putra Ganevo usia 14-17 tahun, 2) adakah pengaruh latihan standing jump terhadap vertical jump atlet putra Ganevo usia 14-17 tahun, 3) jenis latihan yang lebih efektif terhadap vertical jump atlet putra Ganevo usia 14-17 tahun. Penelitian ini adalah experiment dengan desain penelitian yang digunakan adalah “two groups pretest-posttest design”. Instrumen dalam penelitian ini tes vertical jump dengan reliabilitas 0,99 dan validitas 0,989. Subjek dalam penelitian adalah Atlet Klub Bola Voli Ganevo Usia 14 – 17 Tahun yang berjumlah 24 Atlet. Teknik analisis data menggunakan uji t dengan taraf signifikansi 5 %. Hasil penelitian menyimpulkan: (1) ada pengaruh latihan plyometric box jump terhadap vertical jump atlet bola voli putra Ganevo Usia 14-17 tahun, dengan t hitung (8,660) > t table (2,201), dan nilai Signifikansi (0,000) < dari (0,05), (2) ada pengaruh latihan plyometric standing jump terhadap vertical jump atlet bola voli putra Ganevo Usia 14-17 tahun, dengan t hitung (3,522) > t table (2,201), dan nilai Signifikansi (0,005) < dari (0,05), (3) latihan plyometric standing jump lebih baik untuk meningkatkan vertical jump atlet bola voli Ganevo putra Usia 14-17 tahun, dengan t hitung (2,133) > t table (1,720), dan nilai Signifikansi (0,026) < dari (0,05). Selisih posstest sebesar 1,75 cm. EFFECT OF PLYOMETRIC BOX JUMP AND PLYOMETRIC STANDING JUMP TOWARD VERTICAL JUMP ABILITY IN VOLLEY BALL CLUB ATHLETES AbstractThis study aims to determine: 1) is there any influence of Box jump training on vertical jumps of Ganevo male athletes aged 14-17 years, 2) is there any influence of standing jump exercises on vertical jumps of Ganevo male athletes aged 14-17 years, 3) is there any types of exercises give effective effect toward vertical jump of male athlete Ganevo aged 14-17 years. This research is an experiment study using two groups pretest-posttest design. The instrument in this study was a vertical jump test with a reliability of 0.99 and a validity of 0.989. Subjects in this study were Ganevo Volleyball Club Athletes Aged 14-17 Years, 24 Athletes in total as subjects. Data analysis techniques used the t test with a significance level of 5%.The results of the study concluded: (1) there was an effect of plyometric box jump training on the vertical jump of male volleyball athlete Ganevo Age 14-17 years, with t count (8,660)> t table (2,201), and the Significance value (0,000) < of (0 , 05), (2) there is the influence of plyometric standing jump training on the vertical jump of male volleyball athlete Ganevo Age 14-17 years, with t arithmetic (3,522) > t table (2,201), and the Significance value (0.005) < of (0 , 05), (3) plyometric standing jump training is better to increase vertical jump for volleyball athletes of Ganevo men aged 14-17 years, with t arithmetic (2,133)> t table (1,720), and significance value (0.026) <of ( 0.05). Post-test difference of 1.75 cm.

Popular music abounds in Afropean literature, yet to date scholars have primarily read novels’ musical elements through author biography. In this article, I focus narrowly on the rich musical peritexts and musico-literary intermediality of two novels by Insa Sané: Du plomb dans le crâne (2008) and Daddy est mort…: Retour à Sarcelles (2010). In addition to the abundant diegetic musical references, both novels also feature two structural musical layers. I argue that these three musical elements constitute critical sites through which the novels’ narratives, which center around young, black, male protagonists who seek to escape vicious circles of violence through recognition, emerge. Ultimately, these novels’ musical elements situate the narratives’ discussions of black masculinity within much broader conversations transpiring between French and African American communities, thereby providing a much larger cultural genealogy to supplement the characters’ fraught literal ones.

This chapter argues that Dave Chappelle, Affion Crocket, and the duo Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key have all fallen victim to the black comedic Conundrum of excessively physical comedy. These comedians testify not only to the problems associated with representations of the black male body, but also highlight the lack of strong female comediennes headlining television sketch comedy shows. This chapter also notes, however, that each of these comedians has produced satire that conveys substantive social commentary.
