ABSTRACT Mycoplasma pneumoniae is an important causative pathogen of community-acquired pneumonia in children. Rapid and reliable laboratory diagnosis of M. pneumoniae infection is important so that appropriate antibiotic treatment can be initiated to reduce the misuse of drugs and resistance rates. Anti-M. pneumoniae immunoglobulin M (IgM) is an indicator of recent primary infection but can persist for several months after initial infection. It has been suggested that anti-M. pneumoniae immunoglobulin A (IgA) can be a reliable indicator for recent M. pneumoniae infection in adults. We investigated the clinical diagnostic value of M. pneumoniae IgA in school-age children and adolescents with M. pneumoniae-related pneumonia. Eighty children with pneumonia and seropositive for M. pneumoniae IgM or with a 4-fold increase of anti-M. pneumoniae immunoglobulin G (IgG) were enrolled from May 2015 to March 2016. The titers of M. pneumoniae IgA, IgM, and IgG, the clinical features, and laboratory examinations of blood, C-reactive protein, and liver enzymes were analyzed. The initial positivity rates for M. pneumoniae IgM and IgA upon admission to the hospital were 63.6 and 33.8%, respectively. One week after admission, the cumulative positivity rates for M. pneumoniae IgM and IgA increased to 97.5 and 56.3%, respectively. Detection of M. pneumoniae IgM was more sensitive than detection of M. pneumoniae IgA for the diagnosis of M. pneumoniae-related pneumonia in school-age children and adolescents; however, paired sera are necessary for a more accurate diagnosis.

IntroductionImmunoglobulin (Ig) G deposition in patients with IgA nephropathy (IgAN) often indicates poor prognosis, but the relationship between IgM deposition and the clinicopathology of IgAN remains controversial. The purpose of this study is to further understand the relationship between IgM deposition and IgAN, so as to provide a basis for clinical evaluation and treatment.Material and methodsWe included a total of 839 IgAN patients from the nephropathy departments of 2 hospitals; there were 162 IgM-positive patients and 677 IgM-negative patients. Clinical and pathological data were retrospectively analysed. In addition, a multifaceted comparison was made between the IgM-positive group and the IgM-negative group.ResultsThe serum albumin and IgG levels of the IgM-positive group were lower than those of the IgM-negative group, and the levels of low-density lipoprotein, 24 h proteinuria, and IgM were higher than those of the IgM-negative group. The proportion of endothelial cell proliferation (E1), segmental sclerosis or adhesion (S1), and renal tubular interstitial score in the IgM-positive group were all higher than those in the IgM-negative group. Immunofluorescence results showed that the proportion of IgM-positive combination and IgG and C1q deposition was higher than that in the IgM-negative group.ConclusionsImmunoglobulin A nephropathy patients with IgM deposition have relatively poor clinical biochemical indicators, and the degree of renal pathological damage is also relatively serious.

— Serum immunoglobulin A (IgA), immunoglobulin G (IgG), and immunoglobulin M (IgM) levels were determined on 245 patients with carcinoma of the head and neck and on 92 controls. Ratios of these levels were calculated for each subject. The patients with cancer demonstrated elevated serum IgA levels ( P <.0001) and elevated IgA/IgM and IgA/IgG ratios ( P <.05). No differences were noted when the IgM/IgG ratios were compared between the cancer and the control groups. These observations are offered as evidence that previously reported elevations of serum IgA levels in patients with carcinoma of the head and neck are not merely an index of nonspecific increased immunoglobulin production in these patients.

Mannanoligosaccharides (MOS) can be used in poultry production to modulate immunity and improve growth performance. So, we hypothesized that our enzymatic MOS could achieve the same effects in broilers. To investigate this, a total of 192 one-day-old Partridge Shank chickens were allocated to four dietary treatments consisting of six replicates with eight chicks per replicate, and they were fed a basal diet supplemented with 0, 0.5, 1 and 1.5 g MOS per kg of diet(g/kg) for42 days. Treatments did not affect the growth performance of chickens. Dietary MOS linearly increased the relative weight of the bursa of Fabricius and jejunal immunoglobulin M (IgM) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) content, whereas it linearly decreased cecal Salmonella colonies at 21 days (p < 0.05). The concentration of jejunal secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) and IgG at 42 days as well as ileal sIgA, IgG, and IgM at 21 and 42 days were quadratically enhanced by MOS supplementation (p < 0.05). Also, chickens fed MOS exhibited linear and quadratic reduction in jejunal malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulation (p < 0.05). In conclusion, this enzymatic MOS can improve the immune function and intestinal oxidative status of Partridge Shank chickens.

We investigated the effect of acupuncture therapy on obese women's body weight and peripheral blood levels of serum immunoglobulin G ( IgG ), immunoglobulin A ( IgA ), immunoglobulin M ( IgM ), and immunoglobulin E ( IgE ). Sixty-three healthy women were assigned into 3 groups: placebo electroacupuncture ( n = 13; mean age, 40.5 ± 4.2 years; body mass index [BMI], 33.5 ± 4.2), diet restriction ( n = 23; mean age, 42.9 ± 4.0 years; BMI, 34.6 ± 2.9), and electroacupuncture ( n = 24; mean age, 40.1 ± 5.9 years; BMI, 33.9 ± 2.7). Electroacupuncture was applied to the Hunger and Shen Men ear points and to the LI 4, LI 11, St 36, St 44, and Ren 6 body points for 30 min once daily for 20 days. A restricted diet of 1400 kilocalories was given to participants in all 3 groups for 20 days. Weight was lost significantly in subjects in the electroacupuncture group compared to those in the diet restriction and placebo electroacupuncture groups ( p < 0.000, Tukey test). Modulations in serum IgG ( p < 0.001) were apparent in women treated with electroacupuncture compared with women treated with placebo electroacupuncture and restricted diet only. No significant changes were seen in serum IgA , IgM , and IgE levels among the 3 groups. Our results suggest that electroacupuncture can be effectively used to treat obesity. We also observed a modulating effect of serum IgG , which is associated with weight loss, in patients in the electroacupuncture group.

Background: GATA-binding protein 4 (GATA4) can regulate vital genes, such as troponin C, and play an important role in cardiac formation and immune response maturation. Objectives: In this study, GATA4 gene expression was evaluated in two groups of ventricular septal defect (VSD) patients with pneumonia and healthy cases. Methods: This case-control study evaluated GATA4 gene expression by real-time polymerase chain reaction in 80 participants and statically estimated the association between GATA4 expression and immunologic markers, such as immunoglobulin M, immunoglobulin A, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, white blood cell neutrophil, lymphocyte, and number of abortions in mothers of VSD patients with pneumonia. Results: According to the results, there was a significant relationship between mean birth weight and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio with GATA4 gene expression in the case group (P < 0.05). Conclusions: It can be concluded that GATA4 gene expression, especially in patients with VSD, can indicate their susceptibility to pneumonia.

We conducted a non-randomized, open-label clinical trial to assess whether a psychoneuroimmunology-based intervention enhanced immunity in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia undergoing chemotherapy. In total, 16 children (44% female) received psychoneuroimmunology-based intervention, whereas 12 (50% female) received health psychoeducation (controls). The primary outcome was immunity markers, being clinical conditions the secondary outcome. Psychoneuroimmunology-based intervention increased immune markers (CD8+ T, B, and natural killer cells, serum immunoglobulin A, and immunoglobulin M) and quality of life, whereas it shortens the duration of fever and use of antipyretics, antibiotics, analgesics, and respiratory therapy. Immunity markers correlated with clinical conditions. Thus, psychoneuroimmunology-based intervention could reduce hospital cost and increase patient well-being.
