— Serum immunoglobulin A (IgA), immunoglobulin G (IgG), and immunoglobulin M (IgM) levels were determined on 245 patients with carcinoma of the head and neck and on 92 controls. Ratios of these levels were calculated for each subject. The patients with cancer demonstrated elevated serum IgA levels ( P <.0001) and elevated IgA/IgM and IgA/IgG ratios ( P <.05). No differences were noted when the IgM/IgG ratios were compared between the cancer and the control groups. These observations are offered as evidence that previously reported elevations of serum IgA levels in patients with carcinoma of the head and neck are not merely an index of nonspecific increased immunoglobulin production in these patients.

Immunoglobulin A is the predominant secretory antibody at mucosal surfaces. In the dog, immunoglobulin A deficiency (IgAD) is characterized by low to absent serum IgA and normal to elevated serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) and immunoglobulin M (IgM) concentrations. However, studies comparing serum and secretory IgA in dogs have often documented a poor correlation, suggesting that serum concentrations should not be used to estimate mucosal secretion of this antibody. This report demonstrates the concurrent use of serum IgA, IgG, and IgM; secretory IgA (from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid); and immunohistochemical stains on bronchial and duodenal mucosa for IgA-containing B cells in a young Irish setter with recurrent respiratory and gastrointestinal signs.

The objective: the study of immunomodulatory effects of a probiotic, which contains lyophilized Lactobacillus (Lactobacillus rhamnosus) – 13 mg (2,0ґ109 CFU) and lyophilized bifidobacteria (Bifidobacterium lactis) – 4 mg (2,0ґ109 CFU) the level of serum immunoglobulin IgA as a marker of local immunity in the plasma of women of reproductive age with the violation of the biocenosis of the vagina. Patients and methods. The study involved 86 patients of reproductive age with the violation of the vaginal biocenosis, which were divided into two groups according to received treatment. A survey was conducted for all patients in both groups: determine the level of serum IgA, measuring pH of vaginal environment and the quantification of lactobacilli and pathogenic flora with the help of test-system «Florotsenoz» before treatment and in 6 weeks after treatment. The state of vaginal microbiocenosis in both groups before treatment was homogeneous. Patients in both groups as therapy at the first stage of treatment received, if necessary antimicrobial therapy depending on the selected flora. In the second stage (restoration of microflora) patient of the main group received systemic probiotic combined with a complex prebiotic local action, patients in the control group, the probiotic localy in the form of the vaginal candles or tablets. Results. The research stated the increasing level of serum IgA in blood plasma of patients of the main group compared to control group at 20%, normalizing the pH of the vaginal environment in the main group in 94% of cases, which indicates an increase of immunity in mucosal. Conclusion. The inclusion of the systemic probiotic in the scheme of treatment of disorders of biocenosis of the vagina system enhances the increasing of immunity of the mucous membranes, and the vaginal tablets prebiotic of local action restores the own normal microflora of the vagina. Key words: serum immunoglobulin A, local immunity, vaginal dysbiosis, probiotics, prebiotics, vaginal microbiocenosis, the pH of the vaginal environment.

ABSTRACT New assays for antibodies to deamidated gliadin peptides (DGP) expressing celiac disease-specific epitopes were evaluated using 154 sera previously tested for endomysial immunoglobulin A (IgA) (EMA), transglutaminase IgA (TGA), and conventional gliadin antibodies. DGP antibody results showed 97% concordance with EMA and TGA results. Of 56 sera negative for EMA and TGA but positive for conventional gliadin antibodies, 54 (96%) were negative for DGP antibodies.

Background—Secretory immunity is a major defence mechanism against infections at mucosal surfaces which are common in HIV infected patients.Aims—To analyse intestinal immunoglobulin production in HIV infection in comparison with that in saliva and serum.Patients and methods—Immunoglobulin G (IgG), A (IgA), and M (IgM) concentrations were determined in supernatants of short term cultured duodenal biopsy samples, serum, and saliva from HIV infected patients (n = 28) and controls (n = 14) by radial immunodiffusion. Results—IgG was increased in the supernatants of short term cultured biopsy samples and saliva from HIV infected patients compared with controls (p<0.01), but IgA and IgM levels were normal. In contrast, both IgG and IgA concentrations in serum were higher in HIV infected patients than in controls (p<0.002). No correlation was found between IgA produced by duodenal biopsy specimens and serum IgA.Conclusion—Abnormalities in mucosal immunoglobulin production in HIV infection were suprisingly small, indicating that specific secretory immunity rather than quantitative immunoglobulin production may be impaired. However, increased production of IgG could contribute to mucosal inflammation by complement activation. Our findings of normal mucosal IgA production and the lack of correlation between serum and mucosal IgA argues against an intestinal origin for the increased serum IgA levels in HIV infected patients.

Secretory immunoglobulin A (SlgA) is a major component of the secretory immune system and has been demonstrated in the sera of patients with various pathologic conditions. Current studies were undertaken to quantitate secretory components (SC) in sera of patients with squamous cell carcinoma in the head and neck region by means of a sensitive double-antibody radioimmunoassay. Patients with head and neck carcinoma were found to have threefold higher levels of SC (1.54 ± 0.74 mg/ml) compared to normal controls (0.51 ± 0.22mg/ml, P < .0001). Of interest was that the sera of patients who had successfully been treated 2 to 6 months prior to the study demonstrated statistically lower levels than those of patients with untreated carcinoma or recurrent disease. SC in sera appears to be in the form of SlgA. The origin and diagnostic significance of SC are briefly discussed.

We investigated the effect of acupuncture therapy on obese women's body weight and peripheral blood levels of serum immunoglobulin G ( IgG ), immunoglobulin A ( IgA ), immunoglobulin M ( IgM ), and immunoglobulin E ( IgE ). Sixty-three healthy women were assigned into 3 groups: placebo electroacupuncture ( n = 13; mean age, 40.5 ± 4.2 years; body mass index [BMI], 33.5 ± 4.2), diet restriction ( n = 23; mean age, 42.9 ± 4.0 years; BMI, 34.6 ± 2.9), and electroacupuncture ( n = 24; mean age, 40.1 ± 5.9 years; BMI, 33.9 ± 2.7). Electroacupuncture was applied to the Hunger and Shen Men ear points and to the LI 4, LI 11, St 36, St 44, and Ren 6 body points for 30 min once daily for 20 days. A restricted diet of 1400 kilocalories was given to participants in all 3 groups for 20 days. Weight was lost significantly in subjects in the electroacupuncture group compared to those in the diet restriction and placebo electroacupuncture groups ( p < 0.000, Tukey test). Modulations in serum IgG ( p < 0.001) were apparent in women treated with electroacupuncture compared with women treated with placebo electroacupuncture and restricted diet only. No significant changes were seen in serum IgA , IgM , and IgE levels among the 3 groups. Our results suggest that electroacupuncture can be effectively used to treat obesity. We also observed a modulating effect of serum IgG , which is associated with weight loss, in patients in the electroacupuncture group.

ABSTRACT We report an 8-year-old boy with AIDS, extremely elevated serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentration and IgG kappa [IgG(κ)] and IgG lambda [IgG(λ)] paraproteinemia. This paraproteinemia partially responded to highly active antiretroviral therapy. This case emphasizes the importance of controlling B-cell activation.
