Written by a social development practitioner, this paper applies a Goethean approach to the social sphere. The contention being that the Goethean method and understanding can be extended to working with social development processes; equally, that facilitation of social process is enhanced and deepened through a Goethean sensibility. The bulk of the paper, book ended by two obliquely apposite short stories, follows the process of a collaborative enquiry (facilitated by the author) during which participants reflected on a particular social phenomenon. The paper is an illustration of the value of the Goethean approach not only to the (social) phenomenon itself but to the sensibility of participants and groups which undertake it. It also serves to extend the realm of Goethean application into a sphere which is in desperate need of such sensibility.

ABSTRACT Up to the 1990’s the use of the gondang sabangunan, the traditional ceremonial music ensamble of the Batak Toba people,  still played an important role in the practice of their adat (customary law) ceremonies—such as wedding and funeral ceremonies. In present time, however, the so-called musik tiup, a combination of Western brass instruments and Batak Toba traditional musical instruments, tends  to take place of the role of the gondang sabangunan in the adat ceremonies; its use is in fact countinuous. This paper aims to investigate whether or not it is a kind of  social process of  forming a new musical culture identity of the Batak Toba people in Medan. Ethnomusicological and ethno- historical approaches are used in investigating this particular social phenomenon. This research uses decriptive method and the result shows that, on one hand, the people intend to look after their ances- tors’ traditions through the practice of adat ceremonies where they use musik tiup, yet at the same time, they not only perform traditional gondang repertoires (gondang compositions) but also employ certain instruments of the gondang sabangunan ensamble. On the other hand, through the use of musik tiup the people mean to construct and  enrich their musical culture identity. Keywords: Batak Toba, musik tiup, Gondang Sabangunan, identity, adat    ABSTRAK Hingga  dekade  1990an  penggunaan  gondang  sabangunan,  ensambel  musik  seremo- nial masyarakat Batak Toba Toba di kota Medan, masih memainkan peran yang penting di dalam upacara-upacara adat, antara lain upacara perkawinan dan kematian.

The author elaborates on methodological issues of current tendencies in neoclassical theory and demonstrates the necessity of an alternative model of science, which he calls "realist". According to this perspective, constant and regular conjunctions of economic life events should not be the main object of analysis. Rather, the author proposes to consider structures and mechanisms governing events in question. Instead of deductivism, which, as Lawson believes, is a fundamental feature of orthodox economics, the abductive method of economic explanation is proposed that entails investigation of major powers, on which any social phenomenon depends. Society is thereby regarded not as a closed, but rather as an open system.

Academic career-making in the era of globalizing knowledge and a globalized knowledge enterprise is not only an individual undertaking but also a social process. It impacts individual academicians as they meet requirements, secure resources, find opportunities, follow procedures, and build structures to make their careers. It has consequences for society as it establishes institutions, opens markets, provides media, creates values, and enforces rules to connect individual academicians and their products to the larger social system. This paper explores academic careers, and career-making as knowledge and the knowledge enterprise become globally hegemonic. Specifically, it examines how academic career-making makes demands on individuals in the form of brainwashing, emotion rechanneling, life-simplifying, and social isolation. It also investigates how academic careers place constraints over individuality by way of socialization, massing, fashion, and lifestyle. CHRISTIAN RELIGIOUS FUNDAMENTALISM: SOCIAL-POLITICS TENDENCIESAbstractIn the last decades the return of religion in religious fundamentalism form can be observed, using media and instruments of political pressure, because when facing the fear of questioning, fundamentalists see in the “other”, in the different, a threat to be stopped and, in some cases, extirpated top preserve their convictions.  This study aims to discuss the social-politics tendencies of the Christian religious fundamentalism.
